Fenders will be a must for MOT that will be an instant fail. Also the plod will likely not look favourably on the lack of fenders as I believe wheels need to be covered to protect pedestrians for cars to be road legal. Worth checking out ASAP..... would be good to see the modded twisy in a drag race with a standard one to visualise the difference this has all made.
They look great - but wider tyres don't necessarily give more grip - for constant weight, as the area in contact with the road increases, the pressure decreases, so the rubber won't deform as easily to fill the nooks and crannies in the road surface. They'll also give more air resistance, particularly as the top of the wheel is going twice as fast as the car, therefore 4x drag, so you may see your range decrease a little.
Very true Andy. When I worked and lived in Bavaria for 10 years where winter tyres are needed by law, it is well known that thinner tyres give far more grip than fatter ones in the snow and ice. On my old BMW Series 3 I used to fit the thinnest ones possible, 185s I think, instead of the standard 205s
@@zenzen9131 I had 255s on my 300ZX years ago - going anywhere in the winter was just silly with rear wheel drive and engine up front, so I got a Pajero as well and that coped with everything. Offroading in snowy Romanian mountains and quarries was some of the best fun I've ever had with it! Also aquaplaning is more likely, and not at all fun - I've had a few close shaves with those too!
And then there is the extra weight to carry around. And that extra Weight is in the wheels which means bigger rotational inertia. Bad for acceleration, steering and braking. The heavier wheels also increase unsprung mass. Bad for comfort and roadholding.
Yep you can't have an open tyre, so will need a light weight guard, I can't well you how much guard is required, but I bet it does not have to be very big at all.
Great ! No mention of costs on wheels / spacers and speed box . Think by law you need wheel mudgaurds i git pulled on a trailer and got fined soo ? But maybe some aftermarket ones available ?
Hi Andy, Fantastic videos mate, love the enthusiasm that you have. You've sold me on getting a Twizy. I'd like to install the Powerbox. What's the latest model year Twizy that I could go upto, and is there anything I need to look out for when buying one in respect of the above. Where do I get the PB from please. Keep the Twizy films coming.
Isn't the rear tires cirumference a bit small compared to stock...? The front ones are ok, but to keep that staggered look, your rear could have been taller and/or wider. I have aftermarket wheels on my Twizy too: - OZ Racing Ultraleggera, 7x15, matt bronze (Weight: 4.99 kg./11.00 lb.). - Front tires: 195/45 R15, Nankang NS2. - Rear tires: 195/50 R15, Nankang NS2R (Next tire change will be 225/45 R15) Front weight: 12.15 kg./26.78 lb. Rear weight: 13.65 kg./30.09 lb. (Fenders/front cycle wings/mud guards in carbon fiber: Caterham style in front, Dax Rush style in rear.) Stiff(er), but who cares....... It looks and rides better :-)
It can be done but you need to change the speed controller, it costs about 900EUR I think. I will be doing more about tuning the twizy so stay “tuned” 🤗
thanks Andy, just got the twizy and looking for ways to improve it, got a pwerbox, and some nice windows from Korea. just need to better wheels. also planing a second larger battery pack.
@@andykirby just done a big set of batteries for a g-wiz lithium. Got the twizy packs planed. Going to build on the back seat. Think 8 packs of 58v 25ah so about 200ah.
Lighter weight wheels improve handling because you get a reduced weight bouncing up and down (Unsprung weight). Sampler weight wheels against heavy body give the bst handling. Heavier wheels mess with this. But reducing car body weight is not a road to perfection as the ratio sprung to unsprung gets worse. Excessive understeer can be not enough sprung weight at front. It can also be a steering geometry issue. The steering pivot line should hit the rod on tyre centreline. Then you add positive or negative camber and it all gets really complicated. Wheel spacers mess with the geometry often causing bump steer and aggravating understeer.
The Road Vehicles (Construction and Use) Regulations 1986 www.legislation.gov.uk/uksi/1986/1078/regulation/63/made Section 63 of that clearly states you need covered road wheels on a motor vehicle if your using it on the road. Driving it without mudguards will invalidate your insurance as no insurers in their right mind will cover a vehicle on a public road that doesn’t comply with basic construction and use regulations. I would be inclined to look on the various kit car parts websites and see what’s available that can be adapted to suit the Twizzy.
I guess I’m a bit of a hardware guy.😁 The BT powerbox is great but for me you can’t beat a stand-alone device that just does the job it’s supposed to. That being said there’s some great stuff planned for the powerbox app so I’m looking forward to when that happens. You can fit more information on a phone screen than a 3 row OLED display.
Dear Andy, what a great improvement these set of wheels. In a view weeks I will buy a second hand Twizy and I really want to make it look and perform like yours. To solve the open tyre MOT issue, just stick the old ones on when you go for your test.

Probably not as I have a mate there. But yeah I really should get one 😁
