  • #1 from 'The Merchant of Venice: Suite from the Incidental Music' (1905)
    ----------------------------------------------------
Phillip Sear plays a piece from the popular piano version of a suite by the Jersey-born composer Frederick Rosse (1867-1940).
    ----------------------------------------------------
Although forgotten today, Frederick Rosse must be the most successful 'classical' composer to have come from the Channel Islands. He was born in Jersey, but educated at Harrow, and later at European conservatoires. He was well-known as a singer in musicals, but his fame rests largely upon this once enormously popular incidental music to Arthur Bourchier's October 1905 production of 'The Merchant of Venice' at the Garrick Theatre, London. Bourchier was manager and lessee of the theatre, and played the role of Shylock in his own production. It was repeated at Windsor Castle in November by command of Queen Alexandra.
