  • Words And Music was a British TV Programme that explored the meanings behind popular songs. The episode featuring "Sweet Baby James" was broadcast on April 2, 1994.
James' segment for the show was originally recorded on November 3, 1993, the same day he appeared on the BBC's "Late Show".
    LYRICS
Sweet Baby James by James Taylor
There is a young cowboy, he lives on the range
His horse and his cattle are his only companions
He works in the saddle and he sleeps in the canyons
Waiting for summer, his pastures to change
And as the moon rises, he sits by his fire
Thinkin' about women and glasses of beer
Reclosing his eyes as the doggies retire
He sings out a song which is soft, but it's clear
As if maybe someone could hear
    Goodnight, you moonlight ladies
    Rockabye, sweet baby James
Deep greens and blues are the colors I choose
Won't you let me go down in my dreams?
    And rockabye, sweet baby James
Now, the first of December was covered with snow
So was the turnpike from Stockbridge to Boston
Though the Berkshires seemed dreamlike on account of that frostin'
With ten miles behind me and ten thousand more to go
There's a song that they sing when they take to the highway
A song that they sing when they take to the sea
Song that they sing of their home in the sky
Maybe you can believe it if it helps you to sleep
But singing works just fine for me
    So goodnight, you moonlight ladies
    Rockabye, sweet baby James
Deep greens and blues are the colors I choose
Won't you let me go down in my dreams?
    And rockabye, sweet baby James

My husband passed away this spring. Every time I hear James Taylor I remember all the wonderful times we and our family hear him at Tanglewood. At Al's memorial service we had some of your music playing. Thank you so much for giving us wonderful memories.

James Taylor is the greatest songwriter. His songs will always be present in every generation. They are about the common stories we all live and we all have inside ourselves. What an artist.

James Taylor is not just a great musician, he’s also a great storyteller, both funny and serious, and he’s a National Treasure. He’s my favorite male singer/performer from the Baby Boomer Generation. Thank you James for bringing so much joy and comfort to my life. Wishing you many more years of success, good health and happiness

James, you may not realize this, but you and I have sung countless duets throughout the decades, and this is one of them. You inspire me to sing. 🎶
I have no words to adequately convey how in awe I am of your talent.
You and I met in 1967 before your performance at McCormick Place in Chicago. You were so kind to me as the 21-year-old girl that I was gushed that “I listen to your music wherever I go.” Thank you for that.
Now we find ourselves 56 years down the road in our life’s journey, but one thing has not changed, and that is my enjoyment of the music you create.
    ~Love from Iowa~

What an incredibly full and beautiful sound on the guitar! Voice is so lovely and effortless. Love the rhyming scheme (canyon-companion, Boston- frostin) Such a wonderful composition and a great performance. Perhaps unfortunately, so many JT fans are hung up only on his great earlier albums and hits from the early 70's and maybe haven't heard the even more fantastic albums he's released since the late 80's, 90's and 2000's, like "October Road", "New Moon Shine" ,"Never Die Young" and "Hourglass". Songs like "Mean Old Man", "Caroline I See You", "Shed a Little Light", "Valentine's Day", "Gaia", and particularly, "The Frozen Man" are some of his greatest compositions. If you like JT but haven't heard some of these later albums, I strongly recommend checking them out. James Taylor is a national treasure.

So odd hearing cowboy sentiments from east coast people. It’s thousand of miles away. You’d have ran aground on the west coast if you were a cowboy.
