Pierre, I recently bought a 91' 350SD. the car runs great on the road and when the engine is revving. However, on idle, it has a knocking or rattle sound and does use/burn a little bit of oil. My friend thinks it the timing chain tensioner needs to be adjusted, but i'm not convinced, and first want to investigate and research what the cause could be before I open things up.

The Mityvac kit is very handy. One eventually tires of sucking on those little hoses. Great for checking intake vacuum systems too… it seems that Mercedes don’t have the coloured hose any more, i’m working on finding a source for the correct colour and diameter hoses from an industrial pneumatics company. Rubber parts are definitely available - thanks again for helping with the parts link.

If you ever get someone to make the correct colored lines or find a source for the lines, please let me know.

Here in South Africa, the first thing you do after getting into your car is to lock the doors before putting your seat belt on.

Hi, Pierre, love your videos. My 1997 S420 is making some annoying noise I think come from the rear. My trunk easy soft opener was disconnected because it wasn't working but trunk is closing fine mechanically. Is somehow this noise associated with what I described above? Thanks

Ironic. Cultural differences I guess. I'm from South African and i NEVER drove anywhere without all my doors locked at all times. Still don't. I live in Arizona now and no longer have a Benz. Temprorary situation I hope. But when I had my 240D the first thing I would do immediately after starting it was lock the doors. Didn't even think about it. I also had to do alot of that diagnostic work on the vacume system which included replaceing the actual valve on the ignition cylinder. But it was all pretty straightforward. Took a weekend with a mityvac and it worked great.
