  • This is a detailed video showing how to completely disassemble the door of a R107 Mercedes SL. The video details removing the door card, the door glass, the door locks and window regulator. CORRECTION - the parts shown at 13.13 and also 15.00 are actually supposed to be bonded to the side of the window and the black substance is left over glue, and NOT rubber. The grub screws mentioned at 13.30 are for adjusting how the window sides grip the rails. In a future video we will be restoring each part of the door and transplanting it in our project car.

    Thank you for your video. I will be doing similar work. I recommend gluing in the window glass guides with silicone (both those the base and the ones on the front and back).

      Hi - I seem to remember you have a Pagoda. Friends of mine at Autoclassico have just reassembled a 230SL engine and have one mystery bolt left over. I think it is lower bolt that attaches the power steering fluid reservoir to the block...but the bolt is not threaded all the way to the end which is unusual - if you look into the hole into which it fits you can see the timing chain. If I sent you a short video clip would you be able to shed any light on the matter? mike

    Small correction, the "channels" do not have rubber, what you are seeing is the perished remnants of the glue that affixed the window glass to the aluminum channel guides. The guides have a teflon piece that glides on the channel.
    Also take note on the adjustment screws on these guides that allow you to adjust how the guide clamps onto the channels.
    Use this as a guide:

      Hello and thank you SO much for your correction. I will put a correction on the video and be sure to mention this when I reassemble. It is a real benefit having such knowledgeable people viewing this channel - so thanks for shring your knowledge and taking the time to watch these vids. Let me know if there is any particular silicon you plan to use. Mike

    • @cav4290
      @cav4290 3 года назад

      @@MikesMercsandothercars I used a general purpose silicone that I had at home, and was extremely well bonded. I think it's advantageous to use silicone type glue as it has a fit of flexibility to provide some cushion to the glass.

      I had the same issue with my SLC and it took me ages to work out. I could find nothing to show how those guides fit but indeed it turns out they are bonded to the glass not fastened in the channel and then run up and down the channel. Mine had a thin piece of what looked like felt between the metal guide and the glass and a garage who looks after another old car for me used some bonding stuff to stick them back on for me. I kept some photos if of any interest.

    I bought a glass few months back, had a chance to replace it for my 380SL. After installation, the glass is going 3 inches above. Not stopping... When the door is closed, it stops because of that rubber/window frame. But other times, it goes all the way up minimum 3 inches, what do you think is the problem?
    I reinstalled it many times, same result. Maybe I have got wrong glass??

    • @MikesMercsandothercars
      @MikesMercsandothercars  Год назад

      Hmm strange.
      1. What is the measurement from the top to the bottom of the glass?
      2. When the window is down, what is the distance from the bottom of the glass to the bottom of the door?
      3. Presumably, when you put the window down, it is flush with the door chrome and doesn't stick up 3 inches
      4. I am assuming you have electric windows
      I think all the glass in R107 was the same size...but I could be wrong. I still have my door panels off and can double check measurements and operation.

      It is tough to measure the actual height and width of the glass. I already installed it.
      When the glass is down, it does flush and is even only problem is when I roll it up). Yes, I have electrical windows. When you talked in the video about at 16:20 about stops on window mechanism, maybe that is off?
      This door is from a different car, after the accident I had to replace the door and glass. I have original door mechanism from my old door. To compare it, I need to dissemble and remove window mechanism (it is painful job again). But my guess is it is the stops.. however, I thought all 380SL have same stop settings.

      Thanks for your comment and sorry to hear you have a problem. Do you get any ignition lights or handbrake lights or indicator lights? I would say the most likely problem is a dodgy earth connection. On many SL’s I’ve seen people have attached an additional earth to the instrument cluster….probably to cure the problem you have. Take a look at my instrument cluster video for a better idea of where to put the extra earth wire. Mike

    I think you said they don’t make the rubber part that goes on the bottom of the window glass and into the track for the window regulator. If not where did you source yours from? Mine is all rusted and the rubber has rust on it too. Would rather replace with new and clean he rust out of the track.

    This is going to be super helpful to fix my window that a bit loose. Hey Mike, in my 85 I am like checking the OVP.. like is normal for them to have a rattle like there is a pebble in them?

      Thanks for your comment. My silver SL has a bit of a window rattle when I slam the door. Having just done this video, I suspect there is no rubber inside the guides that are screwed onto the vertical rails with those little grub screws. Not too sure about the OVP - can you take yours apart? Mike
