  • You may be familiar with the idea of Mother Earth - that our home planet provides us with a uniquely kind and bountiful environment. This is wrong, as is convincingly argued by philosopher and physicist David Deutsch in his book The Beginning of Infinity.
This video explains his ideas and the revolutionary and dangerous proposition that people can solve any problem that it is physically possible to solve. It also covers the misanthropy - hate of humanity - at the heart of some environmentalism (though not all!).
    Deutsch's The Beginning of Infinity here - / the-beginning-of-infinity
Credits are given in the video, thanks in particular to:
@Scientificus for the incredible Cosmic View video, which I used in reverse for a short section.
I'll be bringing out a series of videos on ideas like this one - arguing a position and referencing famous works of philosophy and reason.

The way some people frame environmental issues shows, I think, an unconcious self-loathing that manifests in loathing all humanity too - and this video points out some good ways to start changing that. But one issue that needs to be added is the 'cultural environment', but which I mean if we don't change our ego-centric cultures and the way we divide humanity into mutually incompatible identities, we will continue to fight and kill each other (and the environment at the same time). Asking an ugly, deluded culture to 'save the environment' is a doomed enterprise. So we have to look closely at some of our crazy cultural trends to find which ones are causing the current epidemics of anxiety, delusion, anger, loneliness etc. We tell young people: buy a home (though we've made it too expensive for you), get married (though half of marriages fail), have kids (though you won't have time to see them), distinguish yourself (though when everyone distinguishes themselves, we're all indistinguishable) ... oh, and when you have time, save the environment. So yes, thanks for starting a really useful debate with this video, but there's much more to discuss

Thanks Rob. I agree this argument misses a great deal in terms of the ego-centric nature of society and also the issue of struggling against other humans (rather than just the environment). Will address some of the ego stuff in the next video!
