Take some accepted principle of modern life and turn it around. Change it.
Take inspiration from science fiction, Borges and the work of the admirable modern philosophers like David Deutsch, Karl Popper and Sam Harris.

Fight of the giants: Wittgenstein versus Popper
This video tells the story of how two philosophical giants of the 20th century met one day in 1946 and got into an enormous fight. Ludwig Wittgenstein and Karl Popper did not like each other - their personalities clashed - but this was also something more - a fight between two approaches to philosophy - the imperious, impetuous Wittgenstein, and the approach that actually was useful - Popper’s. Two guys from Vienna, shunted around the world by war, came together in a room in Kings College Cambridge and didn’t like what they found there. It led, according to eyewitnesses, to the threat of violence with an iron poker.

The End of Self: Sam Harris on our biggest fantasy
Просмотров 1074 месяца назад
The self is an illusion and we can prove it through science, philosophy and experience - that's the ancient wisdom taken up by modern champions like Sam Harris. In this video I argue that as far as I can tell, Harris and his 2500-year-old wingman, Siddartha Gautama (the Buddha) are right. The arguments and quotes in this piece are taken from Harris' book Waking Up, and from Douglas Harding's bo...
Bad Mother Earth: David Deutsch on the cruel biosphere
Просмотров 1285 месяцев назад
You may be familiar with the idea of Mother Earth - that our home planet provides us with a uniquely kind and bountiful environment. This is wrong, as is convincingly argued by philosopher and physicist David Deutsch in his book The Beginning of Infinity. This video explains his ideas and the revolutionary and dangerous proposition that people can solve any problem that it is physically possibl...
By picking up the poker Wittgenstein proved Popper correct.Out of a desire for perfection violence ensues.
That is such a good point Neal. That is one of Popper's great insights.
How do you have less than 50 subscribers, this is great
Thanks Jimmy, really appreciate that.
Terrific video. Well worth a watch
Thanks mate! You are a true believer.
This is the big point that sci fi misses (because it would wreck the story). We are more than just information. The continued existence is you - interrupt it and it becomes someone else.
I like that point Gamer. So the continuation becomes the defining part of self.
That's the kicker, isn't it? If you are the soul inside the meat suit, if we copy the information, which is the "you"?
That's 100% it Nora ... the next step is there is no soul
A masterpiece.
Thanks Miles! That means a lot.
Dang dude, is this orginal? This was brilliant!🎉
It is original - thanks Miles!
If they didn't destroy your body then you are still there so why did they make a copy and your copies aren't you
Nice vid keep grinding
Appreciate it!
@@WhatIfWhen24btw you should put the subtitles in the middle of the vid and make the ai speak faster
@@LopyM24 Hey - thanks for the tip on the subtitles - you reckon that won't block the view? Also - that is my voice, no AI involved
You could make the subtitles and the reason you should put the subtitles in the middle is because you can focus on the vid while seeing the subtitles @@WhatIfWhen24
Amazing
Thank you! Cheers!
Thanks Supra!
👍
Thanks Elske!
So u mass murder those who have that knowledge until that knowledge becomes extinct, then u absolutely destroy the land until its natural resources dry up.... Colonization ladies and gentlemen....
"Bastard Earth" lol!! On a more srious note though, I do like the perspective this vid takes a look at. Thanks for sharing!
Thanks a lot Tubeman!
Consider fire. This phenomenon, has only been observed on earth, and, so far there isn't a single other place in the universe where fire can happen. It's even rarer than liquid water. For fire to exist, you need oxygen and some form of carbon based fuel.
Great observation Sirius.
How incorrect your temperature description is makes me laugh
Hey Kid - can you correct me more specifically?
We are either very special or very lucky. Either way we suck 😂
Not always! Thanks for the comment David.
The way some people frame environmental issues shows, I think, an unconcious self-loathing that manifests in loathing all humanity too - and this video points out some good ways to start changing that. But one issue that needs to be added is the 'cultural environment', but which I mean if we don't change our ego-centric cultures and the way we divide humanity into mutually incompatible identities, we will continue to fight and kill each other (and the environment at the same time). Asking an ugly, deluded culture to 'save the environment' is a doomed enterprise. So we have to look closely at some of our crazy cultural trends to find which ones are causing the current epidemics of anxiety, delusion, anger, loneliness etc. We tell young people: buy a home (though we've made it too expensive for you), get married (though half of marriages fail), have kids (though you won't have time to see them), distinguish yourself (though when everyone distinguishes themselves, we're all indistinguishable) ... oh, and when you have time, save the environment. So yes, thanks for starting a really useful debate with this video, but there's much more to discuss
Thanks Rob. I agree this argument misses a great deal in terms of the ego-centric nature of society and also the issue of struggling against other humans (rather than just the environment). Will address some of the ego stuff in the next video!
Feeling more significant and optimistic after this great video
Thanks mate! You are significant. Believe it.
