    Hey guys,
    Learn how to apply grout.
    This is a overview of how I apply SimpleGrout Pre-Mixed grout using a trowel (also called a grout float) and a sponge. This surface will hold a fireplace in our cabin in the woods. It's a fun little project.
    This is another video in my maker series. I'm hoping to get really good at making these sorts of videos for when I start making really cool stuff for this channel. If you enjoyed this video, please let me know in the comments section.

    Just a few additional points about this application if you plan on putting tile in an RV.. but remember tile Is not flexible and it's pretty risky. Use flex bond thin set. And use premixed grout. I would use hardi backer and not concrete board. Leave a very small gap between the backing material like an 1/8 of an inch. Make sure you use a trowel to apply the thin set and also make sure that there are gaps in the thin set for air to escape when setting the tile ( very important ) grouting is a pain in the rear. So a few hints on grouting. Make sure you push firmly when applying the grout to fill all the joints full. When cleaning it's ok to use a wetter sponge at first to remove the bulk. You'll find pre mixed grout is quite sticky. Once the bulk is removed use very little water on the sponge and very lightly wipe the tile. You can do most of the cleaning while the grout is still damp. The secret is not to scrub the grout. Wet your sponge wring it out wipe the tile in one direction one time then flip the sponge over and repeat only wipe once with each pass. Once you've used both sides of the sponge rinse it out and repeat until the film is gone. It's a very light touch with the sponge don't push down on the sponge at all just wipe.it across the tile. You really want to get as much grout off as possible while it's still kinda wet to avoid a really tough clean up job. It works the same way for all grout and all applications even in a house. Regardless of what type of grout you use.

    I don't even know where to start. The point of the float is to roll the grout into the joints. And clean all the excess off. You never grout the perimeter or where ever there is a change in plane or when you transition to a different material evverything needs room for expansion and contraction. You should put caulking in where the changes are. Silicon where there is heavy water and acrylic where there is no water. Silicon is the best all around choice, it's the most durable and last for ever if installed correctly. You should always use rubber gloves to while working with tile. Installing or grouting, the mud is full of harmful chemicals.

    Nice video and thumbs up! However if I may interject...my experience is that the pre-mixed grout has kind of a glue base which makes it harder to clean off, especially when dry! I think your video may be more suited for the type of grout you need to mix. (sanded or unsanded) When working with the pre-mixed you might want to be more careful about trying to keep it clean during the process, especially with a porous tile. Don't get too far ahead of yourself, try working with 4 sq feet at a time as you showed.

    • @IanRobinsonGlobal
      @IanRobinsonGlobal  7 лет назад +6

      Thanks for the comment. I'm sure there are even better ways to do it than described in this video. I did learn to grout using traditional grout mix, the kind you mix up in a bucket with water and push in. That stuff is easier to clean up off the tiles than the pre-mixed grout. The stuff we used in this video is much stickier so it makes sense to be more careful about the way it is applied. I think you've got a great point. Either way, this fireplace is still standing to this day and this system does work.

    I bought this brand of grout. It is too dry to apply to wall tile right out of the tub onto try tile. The instructions say to stir the grout first then wet the tile well as well as the float, I guess to add more moisture and achieve workable flow into the joints.

    Hey , I'm planning to use this same product(simple grout) to seal up some cracks in the shower. I read the product instruction and it says "adhesive must be cured for 24-48hrs before grouting", not quite sure what that means? Did you apply it straight out of the container without waiting? Thanks

    • @allenkt
      @allenkt 2 года назад +4

      I assume you've already finished but for anyone else....that means the adhesive you are using to stick the tile to the wall (mortar, thinset, etc...) should be cured for 24-48 hours before grouting. So in other words, put your tile on wall (or floor), wait 24-48 hours, then grout.
