    Two buckets is a really good idea. I have been doing it for a while now. Saves a ton of time. Keeps things clean.
    Also yes, mixed grout is terrible now. Horrible color consistency, especially with darker colors. Pre-mixed is a pain to work with but I agree the color consistency alone is worth the trouble.

    I just started doing a shower refresh... only removed some of the grout as there were sections that I couldn't get the mold out of. Otherwise the tile and grout is in good shape. I started with the premix and was frustrated with how much was not getting into the grout lines. None of the videos I watched used premixed grout so I presumed it was the grout that was problematic but now I see what the issue is... this was helpful and now I can go back and finish the job with your advice. thanks!

    Thanks for your great videos. I was a tile setter with Brick layers and Allied Craftsman for 20 years. I've been out of the business for 30 years though. Just did a laundry room floor in my house using products that weren't available 20 - 30 years ago. Used Ditra Ultra (oh man that eats the thinset). Now switching to pre mixed grout based on this one. I'm learning new products and techniques from your videos. Thanks!

    I used bag mix grout today, I wanted to cry. It was such a dumb “baker” situation. The first time I tiled I used pre mixed, and it was a shit show, but overall outcome looked way better than todays grout mix bag. With your tips on using pre mix, I think it’ll go better next time I use pre mix. I learned a lot from your video that I definitley did not do that time.

    I watched a bunch of grouting videos before tackling my shower. Not one of the ones I watched said "if you're using ready mixed grout, you need a different method". I learned the hard way that it doesn't spread easily, and does not come off easily. I took a break mid way through a short wall and looked up ready mixed grout videos because I had that nagging feeling something was off. You could have heard me curse and jump out of the chair almost flinging my coffee when you said "whatever you do, don't let it dry"...yep...Anyway...that was one wall and I learned the hard way, but now I'm ready to tackle the rest the right way :) Thank you for your video!!

    Wish i saw this prior to using Mepei Flexcolor CQ for a backslash install. The install was fine and the color consistency was great but cleaning was painful. I applied and cleaned in small areas every 2-3 minutes but the hazing was bad. Took me an extra 1-2 days just cleaning the haze left off the tiles and some countertop areas. Also, I think those sticky quartz beads in the grout scratched my glazed ceramic tiles - luckily its not easily noticeable. Does spectralite grout use abrasive materials that could scratch polished tiles?

    I wish I'd seen this video a few weeks ago! I might have tried tackling this myself. Is there any scenario in which the thin-set, mesh tape, and aquadefense would extend 2-3 inches PAST the tile onto the finished wall? I ask because that's how my shower was tiled, and the tilers are telling me to skim the area with joint compound and paint it. However, the drywall was newly installed and painted days before they started. I'm not sure if there was a reason to do it like this, or if the tilers just misjudged how far they planned to bring the tile and I should be asking them to fix it..

    I wish I had known about caulking plane changes- I'm currently digging out cracked grout where a contractor did not do this and the grout between the floor and outside wall has cracked in just a few months (very cold climate) and no, I'm not going to make the contractor do it. When he fixes mistakes things ususally get worse.

    Im using this premix and did the normal routine grouting and wiping down but it looks like this brownish grout had stained my tile. How do i clean that up?

    Laticrete says many things about this stuff, that it was in development over a decade, that it’s their biggest advancement in grouting in the last 20 years, that everywhere you would have used spectralock pro epoxy you can use this instead. And they guarantee it for life.
    So just for clarity, you guys are using this exclusively on all shower floors and have been for a while?

    What size bucket of grout is that? In the video it looks larger than the 1 gallon size. If it is bigger where did you buy it from?
    Thanks

    Hi Shanon, thanks a lot for this vid! Please advise: I mix a white grout for art mosaics and it turns into a chalky, soft powdery thing that isn’t hard at all. I mix to toothpaste thickness, clean surfaces and everything. Very bizarre.

      Is the grout old?

    Ma'am, that was an awesome tutorial. I'm an old retired Marine who is trying to refresh the grout in my 60 year old kitchen floor. I recently tried to "paint" it and it was a disaster and realized it would not last. I'd rather apply something that will out last me. Having said that would you recommend the Spectralock 1 as a viable solution, and if so where can I purchase it?
    Thanks and Semper Fi

      Semper Fi Ken! I would highly recommend either Laticrete Spectralok 1 or Mapei Flexcolor CQ both are similiar products and can be found at your local floor and decor. If not you can order it online no problem

      Thank you Ma'am. I'm torn between doing it myself or hiring someone with experience in grout refresh. The question becomes is the juice worth the squeeze? In any event, God bless and rock on @@ThatTileChick

    I really appreciate you calling out the ANSI standard here. I have been watching these videos (how to grout your tile shower!) for a few months and it's never been clearer after watching any other video that the remodelers who did our house did not all know what they were doing. So I've got my grout saw... all my tools... I noticed that nobody who does this video is ever "patching over a failed seal on recently remodeled shower" - would you ever consider doing this, or should I be digging out all the crappy grout job and redoing the whole thing? What can I do with the spaces in the corner where the plane changes, they left at least a quarter inch space for grout and they're obviously too big to use a bead of silicone now? (Why didn't my home inspector catch any of this? Crooked realtor recommended a friendly rubber stamp inspector? Ever heard of a positive outcome in cases such as this, or am I on the hook for $20k remodel now?)

      To be fair, we bought it 3 years ago and I don't know what I'm doing either but I'm not a contractor. They did not use any silicone in the entire shower other than around the water controls. We have big grout lines in the corner where every plane changes, they all are wearing out in the spaces that had the most exposure to water. We had a handy-guy friend come over and try to add silicone in the spaces where grout was used, but it was unsuccessful, the grout seal definitely failed and the grout absorbs any water that it touches. Lucky we have another shower in the house. We started to notice cracks within the first 6 months like you say. Thanks again for doing this video, and again I really appreciate calling out the standard because I'm not a contractor and I don't know this stuff, but I have been hearing people say "don't put grout in that space" and they never show what to do in that space, everybody just fast-forwards to "ok we're done grouting" and you see this beautiful corner, and nothing has been said about how it got like that, other than "don't put grout!" Even in Home RenoVision's full bathroom remodel video, he skips right over this part.

      I thought there was also a chance I'm ahead of myself with my grout saw and the right thing to do now is to just dig out all the grout from where it wasn't supposed to go, fill it with silicone, and douse the entire area with impregnator sealer. But very much afraid this will turn out poorly and we'll be at it again in a few years. I figure if we're going to do it at all, probably worth redoing the whole thing now. If you read this far, my actual question is, is it possible to add grout to grout or am I setting myself up to failure if I don't remove basically all of the grout before I start adding more grout now? Is it OK to just dig out enough grout so I can put down a new layer of grout? Will my new grout adhere to the old grout if it's clean, or do I want to dig out all the existing grout down all the way to the backer board?

    Would you use Spectralock 1 in White for White Carrara marble? Or no because of bleeding or sand?

    • @scooterrockets7815
      @scooterrockets7815 4 месяца назад

      Just did a white marble shower. I used SpectraLock 1 on the shower floor tile only. It is overkill for most walls (unless it is a steam shower). Seal the tile first with 511 penetrating sealer, the day before. Then work 4-6 sq/ft max and wipe after 3-5 minutes max no matter what they say, and then wipe a second time to nearly clean. First wipe is more of a wet float process, the second wipe is to remove 90% of the product residue. After it reaches a barely dry state, wipe with the microfiber with a polishing intensity and motion. No bleeding, no scratches. The sand in the wash bucket is the finest sand I’ve ever seen. This is probably the reason it does not scratch the tile.

    i used a pre mixed grout when tiling my fireplace hearth and it stained my hardwood floors really bad as i grouted the outside edge/trim, any tips to get it off quickly or prevent staining?

    • @ThatTileChick
      @ThatTileChick  10 месяцев назад

      For a scenario like that I would tape off any surface that isn’t going to receive grout. So if I’m grouting a transition from tile to wood I would put blue tape or purple tape (won’t remove finish if left on too long) and then grout. Also keep in mind tile to any hard surface should like a termination should be getting a flexible sealant like grout color matched silicone or grout color matched acrylic caulk!

    @11:00 You're exactly right, plus nobody's going to call the original tile contractor back after 20 years, if they can even remember who it was. They're going to hire a handyman e.g. me.

    when I use urethane grout I do about 3-4 sq feet at a time and wipe down as I go ...always worked for me. I prefer to use it when I can because when I do it that way there is 0 clean up...no going back and wiping away the haze...
