I appreciate the honest review. Man, not having rewind/back button is a big down for me. I hope they offer option to change or long press play/pause to rewind/back button in near future.
I’m loving mine so far. I bought it to use it at work instead of my R4. I do agree that the software has a few bugs. In my case, the time settings reset every time I turn on the R1. The other bug that it’s really bothering me is that my Mac doesn’t recognize the R1 for file transfer via USB connection. I hope this get fixed soon.
Monk, I wanted to like this one but I think I'll be skipping it. Which top 3 affordable DAPs would you recommend for streaming on Tidal with good battery life? Even if the sound is not great and have to use a DAC to get the best sound out of the DAP? My phone is the Galaxy Fold 5. I'm waiting for the Onix Alpha to arrive but I know from experience with the FIIO KA11 that the battery life on my phone sucks when connecting a DAC to it hence wanting to buy a DAP to spare my phone's battery.
The volume lock is a requirement for selling in Europe. The reason the rest of the world gets it is because companies only wanting to develop one OEM and software package. Congratulations, rest-of-world.
@@tonedeafmonk I've got some bad news for you, then... the R4 (the Eva version, at least) and M300 from Hiby both have this wonderful... feature. Thanks for the reviews, TDM
@@PlanetJASONit does it often with iPhone too. And it does it constantly on my partner’s Model 3 OS. Integrations and UI doesn’t really look like tidal’s key strength.
Thank you for this in depth review!! Recommendations for DAP/Mp3 player with better UI for around the same price range (under $150 -- $200 max)? Thanks in Advance!
Hiby M300 is $160. It's android 13 so you can use any music player of choice. All the streaming services just work. Hiby player and UI has always been trash anyway.
Have you seen the original Hiby R2 (Gen 1)? Had a metal shel w/ better build quality, more functionality too as you could use it as a wired desktop DAC. Hiby Link worked. But just like you mentioned here, the OS was not fully baked, And that came out 4 years ago for $100.
Cheers TDM. If the UX is frustratingly awful, the player might sound like sonic milk & honey. Then it's definitely not for me. Shame cos Im looking for something in a similar size and form factor.
@@dreddguy6454 wow that's tiny, my old phone the S10e is small by today's standards and has a headphone jack =) I'll Def get the Hiby R4 when I can afford it, wish it was smaller
@@dreamingthelife Perhaps you might like to check out the Soyes XS16 4G. It measures just 89x45x11mm. Runs Android 10 and has USB C plus a SD card slot. BUT, make sure it's compatible with the networks in your area if you want to stream music or use use it as a phone.
My R4 will not even turn on now... uhg... sorry Hiby not for me... so so glad I listened to you and have my Onix XM5 which just sounds f.... ken stunning. thank you. I also love the M1 Plus.. sound great as well.. but Hiby's stuff ugh just not ready for prime time.

This or the shanling MO pro... which one sounds better?

Firmware update 1.1 was released today. It fixed the time setting issue, but I still have problems connecting to Mac via USB for file transfer.

Save up for the iBasso DX180 or find a used DX170
@tonedeafmonk Thanks Monk, much appreciated! I'll save up for the DX180

That sucks they can make more than version, that and the Repeated login to Tidal makes this player less than desirable

volume lock can be removed on both players (R1 & R4), there are guides to show how can be done

I did the Shanling M1 Plus or maybe wait for others to give their impressions of the new Fiio.

Does it have a Line Out function?
Might pick up one for my Explorer.
The wifi transfer works on files only, it can't send a folder.
I see the update fixed a few things

Yeah I wish it ran android, hard to find anything near this size with it
@dreamingthelife I'm considering getting a tiny phone. Some of those run Android 10. And are just a little larger than a dongle.

I want an r4, but that means I’ll have to import..and warranty is my worry
I just picked up one of these...I need something for when I'm splitting/cutting lumber...so I don't care if it gets dirty or doesn't last too long.
Still think ill go with r4 for android and 4.4
Apparently, the R4 has a very poor battery life. One reviewer said he got as little as 5 hours. So using 4.4mm isn't going to be a good idea.
@@darrencotter8206 i got work and other things to do, it’d be an inconvenience but if it lasts 2-3 hours that’s all i need usually
