Okay now that you've start it with these late 90s erotic thrillers I highly recommend WILD THINGS with Neve Campbell!!! It's another movie right in the same vein as this. Matter of fact I think it's the perfect double feature with cruel intentions
Cruel Intentions is among several movies parodied in Not Another Teen Movie. The list is incredibly long, as they reach all the way back to the 80s😅 but if you enjoy catching every reference it's worth the journey. Pretty In Pink, Sixteen Candles, Breakfast Club, Ferris Bueller's Day Off, Varsity Blues, She's All That, American Pie, American Beauty, Never Been Kissed, Bring It On, Jawbreaker, and Can't Hardly Wait all have their moments.
Katherine: "you'll not only ruin your reputation, you'll DESTROY hers." 17:59 ✋🏼 WAIT A SEC. though i understand the confusion - as THIS is generally the interpretation of what's happening in this exact moment - however, he was manipulated into believing he'd ruin HER reputation (see Katherine's quote above). hus breaking it off HERE, at this moment, is 100% noble.....so as to not tarnish HER reputation. 1 of my fav, yet widely misinterpreted, scenes
Sarah Michelle Gellar makes this movie (which is an adaptation of Dangerous Liasons 😉). She's so wicked, oozes sexuality, and it was an incredible departure from the roles she was taking at the time. Everyone else is great too. I adore Selma Blair's childishness (she would later do a great ditzy performance in the American version of the Australian show Kath & Kim) and Christine Baranski is fabulous in everything, even when she's a prudish racist 😅 Ryan Phillipe is doing a slight John Malkovich impression at times, if you're familiar with JM's 'aggressive enunciation', and I find him hilarious 🤣🤣🤣 He is also really funny in MacGruber (a parody of the 80s show MacGyver - you don't need to watch the show to get the jokes, just know that MacGyver can solve his way out of any problem with random household items)
Excellent reaction and I am sure it’s a hard watch when your sensibility is based on the standards of today. This was from the era of movies taking chances and not being afraid to address the darkness that can be real and part of the human condition. Can you imagine a movie today dealing with these type of attitudes and actions today in a movie targeting the Young Adult audience? Very glad you watched and enjoyed a movie that can be “ offensive “ to many people that are under 30. Also remember at this time SMG was Buffy, Reese Witherspoon was not the nice girl image, and young adult dramas were populated with mostly solid people and the “ antagonist “ were not that evil. This movie was tough but admired for the honest and brutal nature of the battle of the sexes.
Totally agree with you. Social media and even just immature mentalities has ruined the concept of allowing an icon playing the villain. People now act like who ever plays the character is an endorsement of the character. It's ridiculous.
If you want to see a darker role for young Reese Witherspoon - Freeway, with Kiefer Sutherland. It's weird, but in a fun, twisted fairy tale kinda way.
I bought this soundtrack in 2000 and was obsessed with it through high school, and I still listen to it now as it’s still one of my all time favorite movie soundtracks.
This was part of the 90s teen update trend that led from Emma to Clueless. As fun as this movie is, it was inspired by Dangerous Liaisons (1988). I recommend giving that a watch. Stars Glenn Close and John Malkovich with Michelle Pfeiffer in the Reese character, Uma Thurman as Cecile and Keanu Reeves as her tutor. Many awards and Oscar noms.
won Best Kiss at that year's MTV Movie Awards....which were only 2nd to VMA's (Video Music Awards) ---- Both events were basically L I F E back then for millennial preteens & teens! (we didn't have social media then whatsoever...barely even the internet whatsoever!)
Reese was actually a rich girl. Went to all girl school Harpeth Hall here in NashvilleTowne. 🎶 I was only guy i knew who made it to other side a tracks😅 & infiltrated their house parties (realized early on guitar=great "p" equalizer!😅). Didnt last long. I stood out like a sore thumb & moved along. But i think Reese is 3 yrs younger so know she wasnt with high school crowd. If haven't seen, she co-stars with Matthew Broderick (Ferris Bueller) in excellent comedy "Election" you may want to add to your list? Is about high school election, so no poison politics! 🤗💕 Hope all's well, brother. Keep 'em coming! See ya. ✌️🌎❤️
@@mozyflicks Reese Witherspoon's breakout film while a student at Stanford University was Freeway which is a take on Little Red Riding Hood where she plays a juvenile delinquent and Kiefer Sutherland(Stand by Me, The Lost Boys) plays a Serial Killer. Great film! If you want some Ryan Phillippe eye candy try the film 54 based on Studio 54 of the 1970s. My friend David from NYU film school edited it!
I loved your reactions, especially to the twisted central relationship!! I remember being devastated when I saw this years ago; I was so happy that Sebastian changed, so I was heartbroken that he died and there was no happy ending (besides the exposure of the evil SMG!!!). Ryan and Reece dated and married, though the marriage didn't last.
Reese was with Ryan and pregnant during this and the slap scene between her and Ryan was not planned out as it went. it was emotional for each of them and Ryan threw up after.
Such a hot cast 🔥
