I absolutely ADORE flowtelic. I decided to go back to school for psychology as a full-time single mom. I was struggling with organizing all my notes in a way that made sense. I started using the beta last week and I've already worked through most of my backlog from the last semester and completed my prep for the fall. I'm so excited to grow with this app!

Wow, thank you so much for sharing this comment. This has made my day to know that Flowtelic has had an impact to help you. We have a community site if want to ask any questions about the app, the Zettelkasten technique or just generally about what you’re studying-:sounds super interesting.

(Also, please make sure your backing up your notes to a zip file (right-click the collection and select the export option) as this is still a beta)

This comes to mind: Ludwig Wittgenstein's "Tractatus Logico-Philosophicus" (TLP) does have a hierarchical numbering system reminiscent of the Zettelkasten method, it is not explicitly structured using the Folgezettel or Zettelkasten technique. The decimal numbering system in the TLP does allow for a nested exploration of ideas, with sub-propositions branching off main propositions.

Thanks for the video. Curious if you did a follow-up video with suggestions on replacing a manual card ID system using Zettlekasten with current digital solutions for taking notes (e.g., Obsidian, etc.).

Hey. No I don't have a more up-to-date video on this at present. I am looking at some more advanced Obsidian content, so will include this topic. No timeframe at the moment though.

May I recommend watching Scott. P. Scheper on RUclips? He has done an insane amount of research into how Luhmann made notes, which is very different from what Ahrens presents. He is not known ~980 subs, deserves a lot more attention. He explains it in a great way too.
You might learn a lot from his videos (while he's analog), and gain inspiration for your software.

Thank you, that’s a fantastic suggestion. I’ll go find Scott’s channel and subscribe.

@@Martin_Adams Yeah, let me know what you think. They also have a reddit, and I set up a discord server recently for the community.
Btw, I liked your comparison to the linked list, even though I'm not 100% sure that I agree on your explanation of the numbering. Nonetheless, relating to programming terms is cool. My first thought was Inheritance and Composition.

@@productivity6693 Excellent! Yeah I was kicking myself a little in the edit as I don't think I explained the linked list properly. It's less about the numbering, but more about being able to insert something in the middle without having to rewrite the numbering or position of all the things that come after it. Something I know all too well in the programming world.

@@Martin_Adams It's a Linked List after it is "serialized". But it can be a custom linked structure which allows you both:
      1. Add to the existing thing without the need of updating everything else
      2. Extend a train of thought into new cards & branches
Then this custom structure can be "serialized" to a 2D linked list (like you'd do with an Analog Zettlekasten).
I already have in mind what it can be. We can discuss here if you want.
Plus, the research done by Scott Scheper looks pretty solid to me as well. Recently came across his channel. He seems to have highlighted a lot of myths prevalent in the ZK Community about how the OG (Niklas Luhmann) did stuff in his own ZK.

Thank you for the recommendation, I have numerous confusions on the Zettelkasten method, even after reading the Folgezettel Debate (between Daniel Lüdecke and Sascha) in the zettelkasten website.

Q, What if you want to place a note between note A and A1?

    • @Martin_Adams
      @Martin_Adams  Год назад +1

Haha, well done. Someone else pointed out that there is a flaw with this in that you can’t insert a note at the start. Technically A1 is the start of the branch and you can’t put one before it. Hmm. I don’t have a solution, but I will think on this.

This assumes that folgezettel signifies an outlining of ideas, which it definitely does not. The alphanumerics are addresses not indicators of semantic relationships. In other words, folgezettel doesn't show the quality of a relation, just that there is one. No child/parent relationships, no "tree structure." Nada. FZ is just a means for identifying notes within a non-hierarchical thread of ideas, as well as (in the case of paper-based ZK) a way to locate notes. So, to answer the OP's question: there's no reason to slot a note between A and A1. If the idea relates to A, call it A2. If it instead relates to A1, call it A1a.
Also, defs don't start your fz with "A". You'll run out in 26 letters! Start with 1.1 and from there go to 1.1a, 1.1a1, or jump to 2.1, 2.1a, 2.1a1 etc

An even simple method. Just don't assume notes are in sequence, and they shouldn't. Using the same level of numbering simply means they are in the same "stack" of notes. Just place them like a1, a2, a4, a3 if you really need a sequence for your understanding.

I do not see the need for assigning IDs to cards when implementing some variation of Zettelkaster with a computer app.
Why? The search capabilities of computer apps these days are very powerful. Just type in a topic, and the app will produce a list of all notes that mention that topic, regardless of what folders the notes may be in.
If there is some “use case” where that’s not adequate, then create bunch to tags which are topics and search by tag.
