When starting a knitting project, the pattern will list the gauge needed to make the piece. The gauge is particularly important as it will affect the final size of a project. If your gauge doesn’t match the pattern, your project will be larger or smaller than the project in the pattern. It’s critical to use a knitting needle that gives you the gauge that matches the gauge listed in the pattern.
Jill works three swatches of Stockinette stitch using a worsted weight yarn. The first swatch is knit on very large needles, which gives her a loose, mesh-like fabric. The fabric also has a great deal of stretch. A fabric at this gauge might work well for a scarf of shawl project.
The next swatch is worked on small knitting needles. As Jill notes, the fabric has little to no stretch. This fabric might work well for a knitted bag. This fabric is too dense even for socks, as there is not enough stretch in the fabric to pull over the heel and onto the foot.

Finally, Jill shows a completed swatch worked in the knitting needles called for on the yarn label of the worsted weight yarn. She notes that the resulting fabric is nice and even, has some stretch, and is perfect for garments.
Thank you for explaining this so clearly! I appreciate how you showed us how stretchy each swatch was
would be nice if you explained what size needles you used to knit your samples

Loved the video, not to get off topic, your hands look like mine
thank you 💗 i was attempting to replicate a cat beanie with a garter knit and was wondering why the videos teaching how to knit had small stitches and wasn't loose!
You are so welcome!
Just the video i needed
Thank you
You're welcome!
I have a question that is related to needle size and yarn.
I am planning to crochet a hat but I have a 6mm crochet needle, but a 5.5mm yarn. I know the two knitting needles used in your video are drastically different from the middle most one, but I want to know whether if small differences like my case would be too astray from the control.

It wouldn't make too much of a difference I don't think.
Yeah it should be totally fine. Just remember to control your tension as well because that will also effect the size and stretchiness of your stitches.
Im confused im new to knitting. Wouldn't the smaller one be also good for a blanket?. I mean the larger one looks like it wouldn't give aa much warmth considering the holes. Maybe I'm wrong.

The smaller the needle size recommend on the yarn the tighter the fabric. So it could get pretty stiff depending on how small you shrink. If I want a better drape I size up by one, if I want it tighter like for stuffed toys I size down.
The question about holes gets asked about as well with crochet blankets. Common answers for that is that small holes are good cos it might get too warm and some say the small holes actually help make the blanket warm 🤷. I think it just depends on the size of holes.
@@Claire-tz8yl ah im tryng to knit a blanket for a niece but it gets confusing on what to do what not to do. I see what you mean tho. So let's say you were to knit a blanket what size needs or what yarn would you do. You seem to know a hell of a lot more than I do and I appreciate the response.
@@conker33350 sorry it took so long I never got a reply notification. But if it's dk yarn I normally size up to 4.5mm. chunky yarn normally 6 or 6.5. if I'm using something like James c Brett flutter by 1 ball blanket then 10 mm is perfect.
It you're following a pattern then use the needle size the pattern says to use because that's the gauge its using.
Hope that helped
I would like to know the size of needles each swatch was.

Amazing, thank you :-x
What are the needles sizes used here??
This is what I was wondering also. I’m guessing the smallest is a 4 and the next one is a 6. I’m not sure what the last largest size is though.
@@elodiekoldan2405 in mm?
@@shrutibhavsar3908 yes can you please tell the sizes in mm?

thanks for telling us very well needed info but then not telling us the sizes of each needle lmao. thank god for the comment you replied to stating the sizes. you should probably pin that comment. thanks!
The pattern calls for size 5US needle 22 stitches per 4" I have size 7 needles for 22 stitches per 4" is that ok or would it change the final size of the pattern? please help
Hello Claire,
The important thing is to match the stitches per inch with whatever size needle you need to do so. In this case, the size 7 needles are getting you to that measurement.
Sincerely,
Sarah

What are the sizes of the needles shown here?

Most yarns recommend a needle size. What was the correct needle size for this yarn?
if it's worsted weight, the correct size is probably gonna be an 8 but don't quote me on that lol
edit: i looked online to make sure, and my answer was correct (the website i used said sizes 7 to 9 for worsted weight is typical)
edit 2: the person said the middle needles were 8 (in a comment) and that the middle needles were the suggested yarn size (in the video)
Why didn't you tell us what size needles you were using? This video was totally useless!
Say what size of needles you used, don't just say small, medium and large. This is totally useless!

Wow, the aggression in this comment you’ve left on a FREE video is completely uncalled for. Talk about entitlement.
it’s relative
