    Knitting gauge is one of the most important knitting concepts to understand. It's the difference between garments that fit and garments that are disastrously too small or too large. Someone who understands knitting gauge has a world of well-fitting sweaters, mittens, socks and more at their fingertips!
    In this video, we'll go over what gauge is, why it's important, and how to get it so that you can start knitting things that fit! As a wise yarn wrangler once said, "If you want to knit something that fits, then you got to get gauge."

    Very helpful video!
    Actually there is another way to deal with a swatch that doesn't fit the gauge, but I think I am the only person who ever does it because no one ever likes calculating but... I divide the stitches and rows from author's gauge, and my own, and then I adjust the actual knitting pattern to fit my gauge. I've knitted a sweater by recalibrating the numbers of stitches and rows needed, and to be honest I don't do it any other way, just too much work... Math is much faster in my opinion!

  • @dirtydamfino1429

    Just a note: different fibers react differently to blocking. Superwash tends to actually *lengthen* and stretch downwards - quite a lot - so I learned the hard way to always block my swatches if I’m using a superwash. I don’t know how many other fibers or yarn types react like this to blocking, but I’m sure there are more. Something you learn with time and experience.

    I ignore all the yarn recommendations. Cuz usually they are expensive yarn I don’t want to buy. Whatever the gauge is never be the problem. Simply do some math, multiply or divide. Such as the pattern gauge is 20 by 20, my yarn gauge is 25 by 24, just multiply the stitch number. 25 /20 =1.25, so all the stitch number multiply by 1.25. And the row number is easy, just use the measure tape to achieve the length as pattern shown.

    One of the nice things about knitting toe-up socks is after you finish the toe section, you can measure your gauge on the foot instep. From there, just do more [or fewer] increase rounds until you get a good fit when you slip it on. On a sweater, another option, besides changing needles or yarn, is to change the size of the garment, up or down.

      I do the same! I’m like well it doesn’t fit in gauge time to do some math! I am going to try a bigger needle and see if it helps but as I’m just doing “make a 5 inch square” over and over could just add more stitches and rows as needed. Will come back to this for sure though for other projects.

Changing needles or yarn does not in most cases change this for me. Is there any trick you know of short of rewriting pattern shaping to accommodate more rows? I can and have rewritten patterns (I learned because of this problem) I am just hoping you have a simpler solution.

    Hi! I'm new to knitting. This might be a dumb question, but if you wash your swatch and base your gauge on that, then wouldn't you have to wash all of your yarn to have it match the swatch yarn? Or, do you measure the swatch before you wash and dry it and then again after, and make up any difference with extra stitches and rows? I hope that makes sense!

    What do you use if a pattern gives you gauge measurements but doesn't tell what pattern to use for the gauge? Is stockinette stitch pretty much the fall back? Or do I use whatever the main pattern is to make gauge? For example, what if the pattern is mostly made of rib stitch.

    Knitting my first gauge square. Usually I don’t knit for a specific person. I just knit baby clothes and donate them. But with being stuck in quarantine I’m going to knit a special jumper for my granddaughter and I want it to fit!

    I really like this video I have been a knitter for 50-yrs and gauge has always been an issue with me because I have never ever been able to hit Row gauge. I can usually get close enough to block it out or if the pattern says to knit this (sleeve) for 4-inches then I don’t have to worry as much but what I don’t understand is why?? What am I doing that stops me from hitting row gauge?..

  • @theardentarcher
    @theardentarcher 2 года назад +1

    What if you have the correct number of stitches in a row, but not the correct number of rows? For example, gauge is 14 sts and 21 rows, but you have 14 sts and only 18 rows.

    What to do when you get the stitches right, but the rows are off? Idk seems to be a problem with most of my gauges. If the pattern gives measurements then its not too bad cause I can work with that. The problem is with patterns that only give rows and no measurements.

    Thank you so much for this video! I injured my back at work 7 months ago & have been out of work ever since due to it. You can only binge watch so many shows & read so many books (which pains me to say since I'm a hardcore bibliophile📚📖), & watching your videos on how to knit have helped keep me sane & given me something to focus on & help me relax. Since watching your videos, I've made a variety of scarves for friends & family, using different stitches, gauges, & even started combining different stitches to create my own styles. I haven't branched it to an actual pattern yet, but my next step is to knit a beenie. Thank you for giving me a silver lining!
    I have 1 question though, I tried to purchase yarn through your site & couldn't. Are you still selling yarn?

    • @sheepandstitch
      @sheepandstitch  6 лет назад +2

      Hey! Sorry to hear about your back injury. That really sucks. I hope you're on the mend. If there is a silver lining, I guess it would be getting some downtime, being served by family and friends, and oh, also knitting!
      Right now, the site is no longer selling yarn, but you can get the same super bulky yarn from tjockt.com. I think they also have an Etsy page where they sell it too. Get well soon!

      Sheep & Stitch Thank you so much! I'm a pretty active & independent person, so it's definitely taken some adapting to the fact that I can't do a lot of things, but my family has been wonderful. They've even been going to the craft store to get me different size knitting needles & yarn & stitch markers lol. They've been even happier to wear my creations so that makes me happy. If not for your online tutorials, I'd be super bored & beyond depressed. Thank you for keeping me positive! I'll definitely be checking out the website for the yarn because the hanks you use look absolutely gorgeous!

Thank you for taking the time to explain...Your demonstration was insightful and exactly what I needed!😃

    How about maths? Can't you just recalculate the patern by number of stiches and rows you have?
    Specially for simple patterns?
    16x24 and your gauge is 10x17 after blocking then if the patern says 160 stiches you devide them by 16 that would be 10 and with your gage number was 10 stiches that would make 100 stiches for pattern and same principle with rows? Or am I not seeing point here? 🙈😊

    • @sheepandstitch
      @sheepandstitch  2 года назад +1

      Yes! You can rework the gauge if you want to do some maths 👍

  • @finassm
    @finassm 6 лет назад +1

    Hi Davina, the problem that I have with gauge is that my row count matches but my stitch count is too low (by 1.5 -2 stitches usually). When I try changing needles then my row count is off, and I don't really want to switch yarns since I'm mostly using yarn kits (pretty wool and the gang and we are knitters yarn :3). What do you recommend?

    • @hollybishop2095
      @hollybishop2095 5 лет назад

      Same here, only my stitch count will match but my row count is way to many!

    Sitting here trying to learn gauge and have to go find another video to figure out what a garter stitch is. And will probably have to go find another for stockinette. Please, please don’t assume we know these things when making a “beginner” tutorial.

    • @mai7452
      @mai7452 13 часов назад

      Another way to have easy access to this kind of information very easily is to buy or find a book or PDF book including information about different stitches or universally known stitches. I bought a book myself as a beginner and it helped a lot as I wanted to learn new patterns faster and to have it on hand. You also can skim through it so when mentioned somewhere you will be like, "Wait a second... I think I have that somewhere in my book!!" But I have totally been where you are at before and still am sometimes but it makes it a lot easier. I also found that looking over a lot of videos or information about knitting before getting into the hobby helped me a lot too!! I hope you will find yourself a bit less lost with this!! But remember to follow what sticks best with you as all of us are different! Happy knitting!!!
