  • Getting some blocks laid on one of the few dry days we've had, having a good moan about the weather and looking at how expansion ties work. Also, the last video Ben the labourer features in as he's off to the army.

Something very therapeutic about watching a craftsman at work. Lovely job.

@SamDaviesBuilder scary as it might sound, I've been inspired by some of your patio vlogs to tackle my own. 40m² and I'm just waiting for a turn in the weather to start laying. I really appreciate the time you dedicate to sharing your skills.

Good luck with your project and anytime you need advice when you do it just drop me a comment :). I am lucky enough lots of the tutorials I film are jobs I am doing anyway so as long as its the right job I can film it and share my knowledge!

That is a hell of a long string line. How come you didn’t need a tingle somewhere along it buddy?
And I never knew about an expansion gap… that’s something new I’ve learned.
    Brilliant work as always!

Thanks, there's plenty of jobs years ago where I didn't put expansion gaps in and should have if I knew more. I always do now as the walls will always crack otherwise (6+ metre length walls only)
I did use a tingle on the odd course but the concrete was so up and down it didn't make much difference. The slab was so long I think the shuttering the people put up when they concerted was a bit up and down!

Hi Sam, I’m really enjoying your content, thanks sharing your good work.
I had a quick question, I’m building a retaining wall, with block on flat and around 1m to 0.7m high (wall steps down). It’s around 8m long then goes into a corner and steps. I’ve added in rebar into the footings every 1.2m and cut the blocks around the rebar to give added strength.
I’m just wondering if you would suggest using expansion ties for block on flat and this size wall?
    Many thanks

Hi, sounds like a nice project you’ve got going on! Expansion joints should be every 6m but if you put one in just make sure you put plenty of the expansion ties in so it’s not a weak point and ideally use the longest expansion ties you can get.
How far along are you with the wall?

@@SamDaviesBuilder thanks Sam for the note back 🙏
I’ll pick some 200mm expansion ties up today. I’ve got two rows of blocks down so far. Was planning to do some more blockwork this weekend.
Do you think I’m ok to add the expansion ties to the next courses. The two courses already down are below ground/patio slabs.
      Thanks again for your help.

@@Dean-gr3dn yea you’ll be fine adding them in now if those courses are buried.
Also, how is the rebar working with being cut round the blocks? How high does the rebar go? As you can get hollow blocks which you slide over the rebar then concrete in the middle of them

@@SamDaviesBuilderthat’s a good shout, I’ll look into the hollow blocks. I’ve been cutting a hole in the block, it’s worked ok but slow to do. The rebar is around 40-60cm out of the footings, I did this to give some strength to the base of the wall.
Really enjoyed doing something different to my office day job. I’ve got a lot of respect for you guys in the trade, it’s a tough job you guys do with ordering materials (then they don’t turn up), then having to do the job and compete with the wet British weather 👏

@@Dean-gr3dn must be very rewarding doing a project like that for yourself if it’s not your day job. I hope the weather stays on your side for you to finish it too…it’s been a nightmare lately ☔️🌧️
