Being a fisherman and leaving wharf you don't know if it's your last time seeing that wharf or seeing home for that matter.... being a fisherman you risk your life constantly in all honesty I tell everyone I love bye before every trip bc I don't know if they'll ever see me again...I love my job I love being a fisherman but that's the reality of it
I gotta look at death almost every day at my job..I used to love it, but its getting harder to sleep at night with a family..i have been putting off more money lately to stay safe. Ive got to adapt, because what I do, accidents aren't a matter of if, but when..
I love fishing but there is no way in hades that I would go fishing on the Bering sea. I am sure it is an adrenalin rush but no fish is worth risking my life. I give these captains and the men who work on the fishing vessels credit. They work hard and are gutsy. The pay they get in no way seems like enough for the hazards they deal with. God Bless them and may their sunsets be red and their sunrises yellow with fair winds all the while. I say this in regards to an old saying my grandpa who was in the navy. Red sun at night is a sailors delight sunlight in the morning may the sailors take warning.
its not fish its crabs, and its not some dude rec fishing its a business that feeds family pays mortgages, pays school fees, etc etc. all because us the consumer want this stuff and dont realise the danger people are in so we can sit down and eat a crab at dinner.
I could guarantee I would end up in the water doing this job. Either from sleep deprivation or just plain rogue wave something would have me swimming. Luckily I know I couldn't hang with these guys so no chance of me ever being in this situation.
You’d be surprised. No matter how much sleep you haven’t gotten, being out on deck in that weather will keep you on your toes. It’s the body’s natural instinct to stay alive lol
Having spent 40 years on the Bering sea doing this fishery along with others, first thing, those seas are max 20, 35 ft they would be jogging, not working. Wind is only 30 knts or so, Takes about 45 t0 55 knts to build that size of sea away from passes and currents.
3:14 Seagulls braving a storm in the black of night to fish and get whatever the boat tosses, most are now reduced to rats of the sky eating trash and whatever they can find
They use another crab boat that is not fishing that season & they use it for exterior shots of the fleet, the bay & docks, etc. Years ago, Discovery made a behind the scenes.
I just got back from several months on the Bering.. the worst was when we were bucking through shelikoff straight,.. I ended up with a stomach bug, sitting at the wheel, bucking at 1.5 knots, with a garbage can in my lap.. ugh… we ended up driving zone five all the way from port moller to Oregon when we were done.. (in nasty weather)
how are they able to get outside shots of the ship? would that mean, the shooting crew also had a boat travelling parallel to the subject ship? But if thats the case, why are the shots very stable?
Jonathan is a very good spirit, you can feel his spirit coming through the tv.
Yes a great captain as well! 😎👍🏻

The best fishing is in front of the ice but dangerous because you can loose alot of gear fishing that closes to the ice great fishing.

how are they able to get outside shots of the ship? would that mean, the shooting crew also had a boat travelling parallel to the subject ship? But if thats the case, why are the shots very stable?
Yes the filmmakers have other ships following each crew. The cameras they use may have something like gyroscopic stabilization to keep them level.
