Splitting Pavers by Hand

- I've seen a few videos on splitting pavers by hand however I couldn't find a video that showed the final results. Did they look good or could you really tell they were hand split? I am building a patio and decided to shoot a quick video showing what they look like. Personally, I like the look and think it will be hard to tell the difference between hand split versus saw cut once the sand has been added.
Splitting the pavers take a little practice however once you get going you can split them with only a few hits and still get the same accuracy.

Thank you for this video. I'm making a patio for my fire pit, using the same bricks, except in the autumn blend color, in a herring bone pattern also. I need to cut the bricks in half, for areas like yours. I was going to use my wet saw, but the way you're doing it is so much faster. Thank you again, very cool
This isnt criticism, but from a fellow mason, i would strongly recommend to anyone else doing paver pad/walkway to buy a blade. If you dont happen to have an expensive concrete/stone chop saw (looks like a beefy chainsaw, except with a large wheel blade instead of a bar and chain) or a tile saw,you can use a circular saw, a table saw, a miter/compound saw, an angle grinder, hell even reciprocating saws have blades for brick (but those are kind of a PITA). The diamond blades for angle grinders and circular saws really arent that costly. In fact the grinder blades cost just a bit more than a good steel brick chisel (lowes/home depot ect).If your only using it for 1 project you very likely wont need a second blade, nor do u need a fancy one from the local masonry store. Cutting should speed things up, and the clean cuts will look better, and function better. Side note: most pavers have these small tabs along the sides of the brick that help to keep them properly spaced from each other and helps the pavers "flex" as one unit. So if u cut, try to put the cut out,and the tabs in (against the last paver). Just talk to ur local paver supplier and theyll walk u thru installation. Just keep in mind, "its all about the base" ;) haha.

I forgot to mention, splitting works well for cutting large pieces however if you need detailed cuts, splitting does not work well. towards the end up the project I needed 1 inch pieces however the pavers ended up just breaking into odd shapes.
Damn by hand? Hats off to you, I just did a ton but I had a 10 inch diamond blade I put on my tile saw

Good info sir. I am try to figure out how to cut them with angles to fit a curve in a patio / pool surround.
The best way to cut angles is with an angle grinder and a diamond blade. You'll get a smoother cut and the angle you want.
It’s my understanding you want to throw a little bit of an angle on your chisel. The wedge part of the chisel is ejecting the small stone pieces that are making the course line and it can be done quicker by tilting it back maybe 10 or 15° and then your strikes just make them hard and quick you’ll have to hit it less
Your patio looks great. I’m doing a curving pathway to my shed....with irregular bricks (vintage 1840s to 1850 dairy farm flooring and waist wall). The irregular antique bricks have required some creativity on my part. So, I’m curious....do you know if you can use this technique to cut diagonally - maybe even cutting a curve? And once again, beautiful patio, amigo!

How about the manufacturer making half pavers ?
Cute if only a handful of bricks are involved. Next best is an electric grinder and IMHO at the top of the list is a wet tile.

Important: you need eye protection. A splinter may fly to yr eye from the chisel.

I don't have those tools maybe the rental of a masonry saw or block splitter might be better value for money for a one off job rather than buying all the gear?
If you are going to rent something, go with the saw. It will give you cleaner cuts.
You can't get two halfs out of 1 brick unless you use a saw, and you demonstarted perfectly why. If it's a small project, just get a diamond blade for a angle grider. Be aware of the dust tho! We use block cutters and if we have to saw, we only do wet sawing, But our projects are a little bit bigger, like let's say, a whole neighbourhood :)

i bought a wet saw when i installed 1500 sq'ft of pavers. for all that i used it for now i wonder if it was worth it.
Put one paver on top of the other T shaped style scribe the line get a block splitter and split it try doing 300 cuts like that
He does say if only need a few cuts.
Why not just use a block cutter. Saves effort and time
I just use my brick saw unless i work by the hour then i'll grab my chisel
