Lauri Törni AKA Larry Thorne was a Finnish soldier who dedicated his life to fighting and killing Russians. After the Winter War between Finland and Russia, he went to Germany and joined the waffen ss and VOLUNTEERED for the Russian Front. After WW II, believing that the next war against Russia would be waged by the United States, he immigrated to the US and joined the Army. He rose in rank quickly due to his experience, and ended up commanding MAC-V SOG in Vietnam, before he died in a helicopter crash while commanding a mission to find and eliminate VC troops in Laos.
He defected from germany, went home to finland and went back into Finnish service during the continuation war.
Amazing!
@@v3tReacts The man was high speed low drag.
@@darkiee69 Törni did not defect. There were too many officers, so bunch of them were sent back home. Mostly those who were not so good in speaking germany.
He didn´t want to kill "Russians" per say he wanted to kill communism..and during communist era Russia where not Russia it was Soviet Union...be careful with words words thry are the only thing that differences humans from animals..! Also most leading party members during Soviet era wasn´t Russians they where from the "chosen tribe" JUICE or JOOOSS ;)..!
The only former SS officer at Arlington National Cemetery.
We were wondering if he was SS, TY for the information :D
@@v3tReacts interesting note, all foreign volunteers to the German army had to swear into the SS on joining - even if they held zero actual belief in the Nazi party (something Lauri didn’t care for, he just hated the Soviets that much).
The reason they done this was it forced the foreign volunteers into a unbeknownst suicide pact - it pretty much forced them to fight to the end, as SS soldiers were rarely taken prisoner on the Eastern Front. In addition, when the war started to turn on Germany, it pretty much meant that once the crimes of the Nazi party were discovered, any and all SS would be charged under such war crimes. So those volunteers who had all be sworn in as SS would be charged similar.
In essence your life at home is now ruined as everyone would consider you a Nazi and war criminal if you survived. They also knew if taken prisoner they be tried under allied or soviet jury - if you were tried under the Soviets you could pretty much consider yourself dead if you had “any” officiation with the SS - and by the end of the war if allied soldiers or soviet soldiers caught you, you had a high chance of facing deadly reprisals (yes both allied and Soviets soldiers would shoot surrender SS prisoners especially after stuff such as the concentration camps were found and when they would come upon hanged and beaten to death men and boys who had refused conscription in the final defence of Germany) as such the SS volunteers were put in a hard place, and by the end of the war many of these units would fight to the end - fun fact of history, during the final assault of Berlin, the Reichstag was defended by primarily French SS Volunteers. At least two thirds of the buildings defenders were volunteer troops from France.
@@reecedignan8365 Charlemagne Legion if I remember well
@@v3tReacts Those finns who went to germany was supposed to join wermacht or air force. All kinds of branches to learn modern warfare. Then politics came in the way - You go to the ss. There were politically oriented men among them for sure - Törni was not one of them. Törni was sent back to finland with bunch of other officers, there were too many off them. He did not see any action there untill he went back and joined to the german special forces after peace was made betweeen Finland and Russia.
Cross of Mannerheim is one of the highest Finnish medals, the iron cross is one of the highest German medals, and the bronze star purple heart and distinguished flying cross are all American medals

The white death was named Simo Häyhä, and he was Finnish, not german. And he's still the sniper with most kills. Vassilij Zaitsiev was a russian sniper. Made famous in the west through the movie Enemy at the gates.
the movie and ofcourse the sabaton song: White Death ;)
we will hit that song asap
505 confirmed kills in just a 100 days period. Just saying...

191 Mannerheim Crosses were given to our great soliders. All have passed away now. Latest was last year.
I think it was given to 192 people and some got more than one...?
Well timed. It was 55 years ago on the 18th of October when his helicopter went down in Vietnam.
WOW thats crazy and VERY RESPECTABLE!! SALUTE!

AHHH ty makes sense
His story always gets me right in the feels, fights defending his country in the winter war, stays in the continuation war all to go to Vietnam and meet his fate. RIP Larry Thorne.
RIP Lauri Törni. He only changed his name because it was convenient

When the world war was over and he came back to Finland the court decided that he has breaking the law and went to prison, first for 6 years for treason. He tried to escape and actually managed to go pretty far before got caught. But after all he was in the prison for like 1 year before president pardon him to parole ( not sure the word). Right after he got the parole, he went to Sweden for couple of years and met his fiance. They moved to USA, did what he did there to earn his rank. Lauri changed his name to Larry and went to vietnam as captain. Chopper got shot down and all the crew went missing, including Lauri. Lauris grave is in the Arlington National Cemetery. "Major Larry Thorne - Finnish soldier who fought the Soviet Army during the Winter War and the Continuation War, immigrated to the United States after World War II and joined the US Army under the Lodge-Philbin Act. 10th Group honors him yearly by presenting the Larry Thorne Award to the best Operational Detachment-Alpha in the command" Also the Main building of the 10th Special Forces Group is named after Larry Thorne and also yearly awarded trophy by him. In Finland he were ranked as reserve Captain, but lost his rank after years. In German SS he was Captain and in US army he was Major. Got plenty of different medals in every army. Respect to this guy
At the end of the list you can even find "Major Lauri Törni, USA: Veteran of the Finnish Army, Waffen SS during World War II and U.S. Army Special Forces in Vietnam."

Name is Lauri Törni aka Larry Thorne.
Sniper best of the world is again from Finland.
Name is Simo Häyhä.
The sniper you are thinking about s Simo Häyhä another bad ass finn ;-)
Yeah, we get those skull mask's used as ass wipes here in the military. Didn't know one can use it as face protection. Simo Häyhä was the greatest sniper in WW2
He was portrayed by John Wayne in the movie "the Green Berets"!
The guy talk about changed his name to Larry Thorn as it was easier to pronounce his name. He was also considered a traitor to his own people after WW2.
Im here bros

G'day guys! Lauri Torni "Soldier of 3 Armies" in this, Simo Hayha "White Death" was the sniper. Simo and 32 other Finns held against 5000 Russians! The DFC was English and American - usually for Air Force and Navy aircrew but also for airborne or heli-borne soldiers. note: Estonians and remnants of the Wehrmacht resisted the Russians until 1946 and were finally threatened with nukes! My Great Uncle was in the Boer War (underage), WW1 and WW2 ( "too old" - not!) - over 100 y.o. and the gas from 1917 finally got him.
Have you guys go done price of a mile and ballad of bull from sabaton?

SPECIAL JAGER, GUERILLA WARFARE.
The Carolean’s Prayer is about a swedish army In 1682, King Charles XI started to reorganize the Swedish army, which proved to be rather weak in the Scanian wars. Each province was bound by contract to raise and supply a regiment of 1200 men, called Caroleans. They were trained to not open fire until they could see the white of their enemies eyes.
People say commies are good? This guy joined three armies and fought three different wars to kill commies. He is actually the only soldier interned in Arlington who served as a warden SS officer.

Story of Lauri Törni aka Larry Thorne...
Asked grandfather Sulo Kuirinlahti (member of Detachment Törni during 1942-1944) once, can you tell anything from the vinterwar, what do you want to know he said I do not know what you have experienced so it is difficult for me to ask anything specific.
He started by saying, you can't understand in your wildest imagination how horrible it is in war if you haven't participated in it yourself.
Then he told me that during the winter war at Tolvajärvi (Finland's first victory over the Russians during the vinter war) that they were waiting on the beach for a strike, the Russian came over the frozen lake in green uniforms!
Grandpa said that they were easy to kill, but they were so many and then hes lips trembled, he was 84 years at the time!
Talk about bad memories, he died at the age of 86.
This happend long before Detachment Törni were formed. That i told about few weeks ago.
I have grandfather's old front cards, so I know this is true.
Simo Hayha was the Sniper.
They didn't fear death they kept on marching forward to the enemy
Or could it be Lyudmila Pavlicenko aka Lady Death the deadliest woman sniper over 300 Germans killed , and there is a Finish sniper Withe Death who killed 500 Soviets in Winter war and he used a regular rifle no optics
hmmmm

Its not so easy. Indeed I dont know if he wanted to be at war, but it seems like war wanted him. I suggest you take a look about the Vid from "Sabaton History", because its a REALLY long story.
I don`t think anybody wanted to be in a war, but this guy recogniced the threat of the Nazis and was comitted to participate in stopping it. my 2 cents.
Lauri Allan Törni later known as Larry Alan Thorne, was a Finnish born American soldier who fought under three flags: as a Finnish Army officer in the Winter War and the Continuation War ultimately gaining a rank of captain; as a Waffen-SS captain (under the alias Larry Lane) of the Finnish Volunteer Battalion of the Waffen-SS when he fought the Red Army on the Eastern Front in World War II; and as a United States Army Major (under the alias "Larry Thorne") when he served in the U.S. Army Special Forces in the Vietnam War.
