Countdown 100% needs the visual, because it's more of a narration set to music than a song. The band was invited by NASA to the first shuttle launch, and it was a really big deal. Nowadays when SpaceX successfully launches 3 times a week and lands the boosters on the X every time it's hard to remember how enormous that launch was.

Here's what Neil Peart wrote in the Signals tour book about the experience of attending this launch:
    ----
We were there! It wasn't easy, but we made it! We had a long-standing invitation to the first launch, and always swore that we would be there no matter what. Little did we know!
On April 9th we flew into Orlando on a day off, checked into a hotel, and slept until about four A.M., when we had to leave for our rendezvous at the Air Force Base near the Cape. There we met our liaison man, who conducted us safely into the "V.I.P." zone (Red Sector A) in the pre-dawn hours. We stood around, listening to the announcements, as the sun rose higher and hotter in the sky. We were due to play that night in Dallas, so we couldn't wait much longer. Finally they announced that the launch would be scrubbed for that day. The computers weren't speaking!
Well, we ran for the car, and our daring driver sped off, around the traffic jams, down the median of the highway, and got us to the airport barely in time.
The next night we had a show in San Antonio, after which we drove off immediately, clambered into a hired jet, and flew straight back to Florida. This time the launch took place on schedule, and it was SOMETHING!! (More about that in the song.) Again we raced backed to the plane, and flew off once more, back to Fort Worth where we had a show that night. Fortunately the day after that was a day off, so we had a chance to catch up on all that sleep!
I remember thinking to myself as we flew back to Fort Worth after a couple days without sleep: "We've got to write a song about this!" It was an incredible thing to witness, truly a once-in-a-lifetime experience. I can only hope that the song comes even close to capturing the excitement and awe that we felt that morning.

The song is definitely more a soundtrack for the shuttle footage as opposed to another banger of a song on the Signals album. That said, the first shuttle launch was an historic event of immense significance, I think that helps elevate the song in lots of people’s minds. I think someone else mentioned the drumming around the “air is charged” and “excitement so thick” lines, I get goosebumps at the way Neil holds back then rolls back through these parts. Great to see you watch this, we all know you secretly love this song and this was a roundabout way of showing us 😄

That's what I really love about Geddy. It's not like he was playing keys and synths since day 1. He picked that shit up later in life, a complete different instrument, learned it, the programing behind it, and was killing it. It be hard enough to learn something different that late in life. I know he got lower back problems from carrying Rush for 40 years 🤣🤣🤣

He also considered himself a rudimentary synth player compared to bass and vocals. And it shows in this song... the synth lines / solo are catchy enough but they're extremely basic... all in the Aeolian mode (white keys) with no real harmonic coloring to speak of.

The Space Shuttle program was going to be the greatest thing NASA ever did, and it was. It didn't turn out the way they expected, but it was awesome. The way Rush captured this moment in time is nothing short of incredible.

Analog vs Digital that’s pretty much the argument to be made when comparing or choosing the preferred sound. Rush had little choice but to embrace the digital format in its entirety. Both as a true “progressive” band and as consummate musicians, it was both innovative and necessary as it allowed them to play things live, as a three piece band that was unimaginable to musicians not even a decade prior(from 1984 proper)Also as a major touring outfit the digital form provided more consistency in sound and ease of operating(also all the setting up and tearing down night after night)vs all the individual pieces of technology that were used to record the original music. RUSH were always WAY AHEAD of the times🤘🖖✌️🎸🎹🎤🥁🥇🎼🇨🇦👌👍

I was exposed to the songs off of Moving Pictures thru the videos that aired on MTV...and the guys that played the album in the back of the bus on the way to/from school. Yeah it was really an 80’s thing. I told you the video was cool, tho! It adds a lot of context! The launch was such a big deal! Now it seems kind of insignificant when there are private launchings all the time! So back then, this was historic! The NASA guys even say at the end “we really enjoyed the music, Bob”! I agree about the video, it’s like the song was written around the video. This played on MTV a lot back then. Be well and God bless.. from Texas!!

Cool video in the sense that it makes me remember the thrill of watching that first launch of Columbia and the beginning of the space shuttle program. Since the song is topical to that specific event and time, I can see where it would be difficult for people to connect with the song who didn’t participate in that experience. A unique song in the Rush catalog that will always remind me of good Columbia memories. I was mountain biking in central Texas with fiends the morning Columbia disintegrated during reentry. We didn’t didn’t comprehend what we were seeing at the time, believing it to be a daytime sighting of an extraordinary meteor shower or something. We went out for breakfast after the ride and the tragic news was on the tv in the cafe. It was a horrific and sickening revelation to realize what we had witnessed. Countdown reminds me of the fascination and awe we felt on Columbia’s first launch and America’s return to manned space flight.

admittedly this is a bit more upbeat vibe than the Philip Glass/ Koyaanisqatsi footage of a shuttle launch. Anyone seen that? End of the film I think

Oh, by the way, I am officially not drinking anything while watching your videos. This is the second time I've had to change a shirt and clean-up iced tea spit out from laughter at the 4 second point of this one. "My favorite song off of signals" is the best line and visual in the reaction.

Isn't it a nice synth solo for someone who's mainly a solid bass player?

Despite this song being different from the rest of Signals and the sound a bit dated it’s still a great song. This video got regular airplay on MTV along with Distant Early Warning. They did videos too for Afterimage and Enemy Within but they didn’t get any airplay. But there on RUclips.

Yeah I think you nailed the song perfectly. It was a had to be their type of song. And I think they did achieve what they were trying to accomplish with this song basically a tribute to the space shuttle program. Not a playlist song, but a Good song nonetheless

I think it would be better to react to live videos. Especially for Grace Under Pressure songs, a bit later, where there's actually quite a bit of difference in the sound of the actual song.

I don't agree with "you had to be there" and being older and before the video generation I have always been able to appreciate a song for what it is without needing a visual aid. I was never even a fan of the Space Shuttle program yet I always liked this song, mainly for the music, but it also did have a few good lines in it

You watched the 2 most commercially promoted music videos from GUP which is fine but the ones for either Body Electric or Red Sector A have a horrible cringe factor. Might want to look them up even if just for your own amusement.

This song is a lot of buildup, for a cheesy conclusion, about a child-like fascination with NASA. It's hard for me, an 80's/90's kid, to take this song seriously, without lumping it into a cheesy 80's movie plot from a movie like "War Games" or "Space Camp".
