Weird History: Episode(s) about guilds. What were they? What kind of people were they comprised of? Do viewers want episodic dedication for individual guilds? Maybe they do! Is magic real? Do I have chlamydia? Why do I make poor choices?
For a simple explanation, guilds were similar to unions! They were comprised of the working class, and many of them were men. There were also guilds of working women. They were like a family, making sure everyone was paid fairly, no one was being being treated unjustly, and that if anyone needed anything, they were there to provide. So it was very much like unions!
While it's easy to explain what they were and who was in them, I would absolutely love videos dedicated to individual guilds! For one, it's absolutely fascinating and I love the deep dives. For two, I'm almost certain my students would prefer this narrator and this wit to me taking for the full hour and fifteen minutes of class 😅
On the Cartoon Network animated series "The Marvelous Adventures Of Flapjack" there was a creepy character named Dr. Barber. Dr. Barber was way into extreme medical procedures.
My assistant, Roseanne Roseannadanna, was supposed to research that topic. Instead, she gave me a report on courtroom gestures (with a focus on the gavel strike).
My last name is Barbour (Scottish Barber). I remember growing up kids would make hair cutting jokes lol. It never bothered me but I thought it was pretty cool when I learned they were also surgeons and would pull teeth too
Did anyone else laugh when the medieval textbook said that bloodletting helped to alleviate anxiety? Lol. "Hi, welcome. Have a seat while I cut a major artery and remove a large amount of blood from your body. Relaxing, right? Feel that anxiety just disappear..."
When I was a kid I thought milk chocolate was a small brick of chocolate that you add to a glass of milk to make chocolate milk. That seems to be the method of thinking used by these people.
A report on ancient execution methods could be interesting. Since the 18th century the guillotine has been famous. The story is not what you might think. Dr. Guillotin didn't invent the machine and was opposed to capital punishment. However, as he could not get support for abolishing it, he did the next best thing. Executions at the time were quite horrible and dreadfully painful and if one goes further back in time they probably weren't any better. So he advanced the idea of using a machine that had been invented long before as quick, less painful way to carry them out. He was actually trying to make the distasteful process more humane, or at least less inhumane.
That's why surgeon are not called "Doctor" when they gain FRCS after their names. They're not considered physicians anymore, but a breed apart. Operating theatres did evolve later, an amphitheatre with the operating table in the centre. I remember beer shampoo being sold back in the 80s, however some of the brands of booze that you mention would be reminiscent of urine, watered down urine, mind.
When I was a teenager, back in the 70's, there was a homeless man who got around Tweed Heads. He had beautiful shoulder length silky hair that fell perfectly, just like you want your conditioner to do. When asked how his hair was so beautiful whilst the rest of him was dirty and decrepit he simply said that he washed his hair every day in the first urine of the morning.
I am so glad I live in a time where medical practice is much better. No, it's not perfect but my goodness the changes and strides we have made since the Medieval times is insane. I would love to go back to that time and live just for a day or two to see what it was like.
same, i always thought it would be interesting to "enter" medieval times as an invulnerable ghost, a spectator, just to see what the hell is going on out there

I'm very surprised that this channel does not have any videos on William Shakespeare (unless I've missed it somewhere) could you possible a video about him?
When I was in nursing school, we were studying surgical nursing and I was lucky enough to get in to watch the most respected, local gastrointestinal surgeon remove my patient's entire large intestine and connect the end of his small intestine to a stoma located on his abdomen. The last step was to remove the anus and seal that wound with stitches since he wouldn't need it any longer. When the surgeon examined the perianal area, he said, "This has not been shaved." The orangey-brown of the povidone-iodine solution used to sterilize the skin was there, but hairs were sticking up and they were obvious. One of the OR nurses said, "I'm sorry, doctor. That was my fault. I can do it right now." The surgeon said, "No, I'll do it myself. Just bring me the razor." He lathered up the area and began shaving off the hairs. I'll never forget what he said next, because I cracked up and almost fell over. He said, "This reminds me of the days of the Barber Surgeons." Only a couple of us in the theater got the joke. The surgeon was well-pleased with us. I saw the thumbnail for this video and remembered that experience. I remember being glad that I had been fascinated and even horrified by primitive medicine and surgery (turned out to consist mostly of superstitious nonsense that tended to cause more harm), so of course I read up on it. I ended up hating on Galen and his followers for the harm they did over a thousand years with their "laudable pus" theory. They'd beat up anyone who dared question the great Galen and insist that poultices of animal dung be placed on wounds after surgery "so that pus can form and thus the wound can heal. A wound cannot heal without the formation of pus!" they claimed, those idiots. How many people died because of them? It's hard to say. IMO, Ambroise Pare was one of the most fascinating characters of the barber surgeons. His writings and illustrations, especially the "monsters," are incredible and often fanciful. There should be movies made about Ambroise Pare.
Gotta love living in the modern times, if I'm sore I can just pop some Tylenol. Imagine going to the barber for a headache and you get drained 2 pints of blood to get rid of the "toxins" lmao
Well there was some interesting things here but I already had a good idea what the barber surgeon did. Did you ever wonder haw the barbershop quartet came about. When the barber was carrying out surgery it could get quite noisy, because of the amount of pain involved for the patient and the lack of painkillers not given to the said patient. So the barber would leave out sheet music and musical instruments for his other customers so that their singing and music playing would drown out the patients cries. From this came the barbershop quartet. Though having heard four men dress as barbers from the start of the 20th century singing in close harmony some of use prefare the screams.
Would be crazy to live in a time where you could conduct an impromptu or planned medical experiment and advance medical practice that much which benefits so many people for centuries to come. We should be thanking these people everyday of our lives 🙏 ❤

If I’m sore, I just suck it up and don’t worry about taking anything.
Can you do a video on war tactics in history?? or evolution of it.
went and got my haircut, Got a shave, had teeth cleaning, got my appendix taken out. Full day full day.
But just imagine if you had to go to a bunch of different places to get all that done, then that really would’ve eaten up your time.
I’d love to hear about medieval Archers.
Make a video about medieval teachers!
Can you do a video on the poor house/workhouse?
Funny thing is, i had hemocromatosis, and had to be bloodlet, and that description of what it did checks out lol
I would love to learn the history of farriers
8:54 the chandler joke was the funniest I've ever heard.
That bloodletting ad was great
Would be crazy to live in a time where you could conduct an impromptu or planned medical experiment and advance medical practice that much which benefits so many people for centuries to come. We should be thanking these people everyday of our lives 🙏 ❤
I agree 100%. He was a bit unfair to them.
If you wanted a good doctor back then, you wanted Ambrose Pare.
Omg
My favourite part of this whole video is the cartoon bottle of urine shampoo that says ‘Gluten free’ on it.
I’m sure all these medieval barber-surgeons were quite sober fellows who never imbibed during working hours…..
"Medieval Barber Theodoric of York - SNL" is one of the great comedy sketches of SNL and it's on RUclips. Search on that and see what it was really like back then.
"What you need is a good bleeding."
"But I'm bleeding already."
"Hey, who's the barber here?" 😂
Never missed a video, give the narrator a raise.
Some parts of the Thames are FINALLY safe to swim in. Here in Oxford some parts Have been tested and proven to be safe for bathing!
These days I might take my chances with a barber. 💈
“You won’t see human urine on the shelf at target anytime soon“…
I guess your target is a lot nicer than mine.
