My father was an alcoholic and still provided for his family. He worked 3 jobs to make sure we had what we needed. Alcoholism is an illness that requires treatment and therapy just like any other illness. I loved my father . She mixed the lye with water, for everyone saying that he did it to himself or that she didn’t realize what she was throwing at him. She knew that at a minimum, it would seriously harm him. Her reaction to finding out that it did in fact severely injure him just further underscores that.

Rules about causing death in the US are bizarre.
A young woman who deliberately drove drunk and after taking drugs, killed two pedestrians who were crossing the road. She laughed and giggled while with an officer, but got annoyed with him when he said she was under arrest. She showed zero remorse.
She did get a sentence, but less than 10 years.
    That's 2 people, killed instantly.
This young woman clearly did not think what she threw would kill her father. And it took half a horrible year for his death to occur. Her life was constantly and badly impacted by his drinking, it was to her a very special day, she was very hurt and upset. Clearly this is not premeditated murder. But SHE is charged with murder, whereas drunk drivers who KNOW they are getting into a weapon and going on roads where they KNOW there will be other humans...that is NOT counted as premeditation. Well, they may not have planned to kill...but they knew there was a very good chance they would, and decided they didn't care.
There is a lack of congruity. But I expect this is because
    1. drink driving is so common that politicians and judges know their careers will take a hit if they advocate for proper laws to control and punish it
    2. the booze industry is powerful, whereas a penniless 17 year old with an alcoholic father has zero power.
BTW I'm not saying she doesn't deserve a punishment, but all these should require joined up thinking and sentences.

If she had cared one single morsel about her dad, she would have inquired more about what was wrong with him and would have gone to the hospital! People may do rash things in anger, but she had had enough time by the time he was found and taken to the hospital to cool down and become concerned that something she did “accidentally” harmed him or even that his drinking had caused something.

I understand your point. If the situation were less fraught with ramifications, I’d feel the same. Devil’s advocate: But if her “father” had cared one iota for Megan, he’d have pulled himself together and gone thru treatment. I lived this alcoholic garbage for 10 years. My alcoholic refused treatment multiple times. He said he had to “self medicate” but I staggered thru his abuse sober. He said “beer was a food group.” (Ha ha - he thought it was funny but it’s not f-ing funny.) He drank coffee non-stop til 2p then had to “calm down” until he passed out at night. I finally threw him out, but Megan was only 17 and conditioned to her father’s callous disregard all her life, apparently. He taught her not to care. Where was her breaking point supposed to be?

I agree with what was said here. I don't think the defendant meant to throw a harmful substance on her father. The man was a sloppy, messy drunk and a horrible parent. She said he was drunk no one else was there to agree or disagree with her she in my opinion is self centered and doesn’t care about anyone but herself the fact that her dad was so happy when he saw his ex wife makes me feel like he may have been asleep and that’s why he didn’t know what happened and he also may have had dementia or Alzheimer’s to be able to show her friend his finger’s and not be upset or panicked about it Alzheimer’s and dementia can do something like that to you because you really don’t know what is going on.
