Corners! Oh yes, please! Ones of my biggest frustrations is that so few edging patterns seem to include corners. Would also love to see the design process that you use to create a corner from a pattern. Lovely work as always! I aspire to have as smooth of a technique and rhythm as you do. I'm getting better, but I still feel like my movements are big and exaggerated instead of small and efficient.

As for efficiency, I agree with you and the fewest and smallest movements possible is what helps make any needlework smoother and faster. I've been working on that for knitting too and my technique is much better than it used to be.
Hi Shirla, thank you for your comment. I still often find it difficult to get the lighting right when working with a dark background and can find it harder on the eyes to look at so I still prefer a light background with a medium colour thread but I'm always learning and trying to improve the quality of my videos. I'm far from perfect, but I'm trying! :-)

I will also add another link to a video that shows how to add more thread when working with just one shuttle, you might find that one useful too. I don't like sewing ends in so any trick that helps hide them along the way instead is good in my book! :-)

The black background is nice too.At the same time, all of your other videos have good quality, you've set your camera in a nice focus and angle so it doesn't really affect me. I appreciate your work anyway because of your experience, attention,love you transmit to us/me. Good job, keep going.

I appreciate the dark solid colored background, it makes it so much easier to see the stitches. And corner details are always appreciated. Yes, I'd love a corner video! My Grandma made hankies for her daughters & granddaughters. I'm trying to recreate her work for future generations, so thank you for your videos! Is there a way to close your work without putting the shuttle down? And also Grandma used to dangle the shuttle to get out twists in the thread. I've tried that, but I still always get a kink every time I try to close a ring. And tips? Thanks again!!!
Hello TS, a lovely story about your Grandma and I'm a fan of handkerchiefs with lace edgings. You could certainly continue to hold your shuttle in your hand while you pull the ring closed or I've also used my watch bracelet to tuck the shuttle into... why do you not want to put your shuttle down? For efficiency? As for the kinks in your thread, yes, letting the shuttle twirl to unwind the thread works but some threads seem to just be "twistier" than others! I'm afraid I don't know of another solution to that problem. Are you using bobbin shuttle? If you wind by hand, I find that can sometimes add twist to thread so rolling to fill instead keeps the thread straighter as you load it onto your bobbin.

Thank you very much Sewnut. My favourite shuttle has always been the Aero (or Aero-type) shuttle. I love a bobbin shuttle as I find it much quicker to wind and unwind as you work and to fill and re-fill and I also love the attached hook. Some versions of bobbin shuttles do not have good tension but I've always been happy with Aeros. As for thread, I would say that I use Lizbeth in size 20 the most - they have an amazing array of colours to choose from and it has a good twist. I do like finer sizes for handkerchiefs but for the majority of my tatting I use size 20. I also really like DMC Babylo which is a bit softer but lovely to work with and also more affordable.
Great tutorial yet again! Can I ask what size the BTS should be for size 40 thread? And what size picots should be? In general, I’m never sure what size I should make my picots and BTSs. Your help is much appreciated. Thanks!!
Hello Julienne, you could use the same size BTSs as I use here or you could make them a little bit shorter, say 3mm instead of 4. I've not worked this in size 40 thread so it's just a matter of trying what looks good to you really. It's the same for picots (the decorative ones at any rate), I tend to make my picots small but some people prefer them longer so it's really a matter of your personal taste. :-)

Hello Michael, I'm not a needle tatter... but my guess would be that perhaps your needle is not matched to your thread? If your needle is too thin for the size of your thread, the knots will be small and it will make it difficult for the double thickness of thread to slide through after you've made the knots. But as I say, I'm no expert with needle tatting!

Hello Cat, it depends on the pattern. If a pattern has only rings, you can work with just one shuttle. If a shuttle has rings and chains, you can work with one shuttle and ball. If a shuttle has thrown rings, then you need two shuttles. Hope this helps!
