Sarah, your podcast is so refreshing and feels like I am chatting with a friend as I knit and we talk about what’s going on. I love the pillow! I took ice skating lessons as an adult and loved it. I have been tempted to try again, but I am a bit afraid of “if I fall and hurt/break” this or that…I am finishing a few whips that have been languishing - an Oslo hat and Montana Mountain cowl. Why not, because who doesn’t need a hat with mohair and a cowl made of wool as today’s temperature is expected to be in the 70s in central North Carolina. Oh well, next year is coming. I have yarn to knit a Ranunculus out of linen and sew a dress in linen in a similar color. Kind of matches matches, but what slays me is that it is in pink, a color that I had never embraced before. I am blaming it on the pandemic. I am looking forward to your next episode and with you good luck on all of your creative makings. Cheers, Dee

I sew garments a lot using mostly PDF's. I print and tape together. Then trace off my size onto plain paper on a roll. I find tracing the pattern very relaxing. It helps me become familiar with all the pieces. I write my own notes as well as the necessary information (pattern name, piece, size, how many to cut, and seam allowance) as I go. I make all fit adjustments with notes on the traced pieces. Original stays unchanged. I keep the traced pieces in vinyl pockets in a 3-ringed notebook, which makes them easy to find.

You are the second knitter/maker I have watched today who has said reading a knitting book has been life changing. I find that very interesting. And I salute you. You seem so very genuine and clear on who you are, I am very glad you are getting back to 'who you are' and being that person again in all (?) facets of your life. If I lived in your area, I would LOVE to hang out knitting with you and listening to your rambles. (And if you're still interested in recommendations and haven''t heard of her, check out Cookie Washington, a quilter from Charleston SC, who is this week doing a presentation at the Smithsonian and who has won all kinds of awards. Her work is amazing... and she's a lovely person.) And your 7 shawl personal challenge? Bonne chance!

Sorry you were sick, glad you're back. Don't you love it when you get a much needed message from the universe but from a totally unexpected place? These are the best. Serendipity.
I live near a tiny little town in Iowa, named Riverside. The future birthplace of Captain James T Kirk. Each year they hold a Star Trek "festival." It's been much better in previous years. One year I got to meet Nichelle Nicoles, George Takai, and Walter Koenig.

At 55 years old I also am seeking out experiences and having ideas of activities or classes that I want to take part in. You taking on these new experiences or furthering old ones is inspiring. it's only episode 4 and I am hooked. I love that you are going outside the norm for yourself and trying your hand at different things. I have also been trying to branch out- so far I have done a bit of embroidery and hand stitching on a quilt. there is an unfinished rug punch kit and a crochet project. and really out there for me is a watercolor kit that I was gifted last year. so far I am enjoying trying different skills and while my attempts are less than perfect it is fun and satisfying.

  • @stellajay8860

So many great projects! I love, love, love how your shawl turned out. Such beautiful colors and so dramatic with all of its different elements. I've also been on a huge shawl kick although I am mostly a crocheter and not a knitter. Hats are about where my stamina runs out for knitting, but it's still fun when I do it! And as a crocheter I can say that your pillow is amazing! That is a crazy project to undertake as a beginner and you did a great job with it.
I also have a small back measurement and a large chest and totally sympathize with feeling run down by your test knit situation. I think I honestly would have dropped out. That is so much stitching to do for something unwearable. :( I hope the yarn finds a new life as something even more beautiful that brings you lots of joy.

Over the past year I’ve knitted 8 Ranunculi (???) in quite a few different yarn weights. I’ll definitely be joining in, and would be open to sharing any tips and tricks. My main tip would be to watch Sun Dragon Tips and Tricks podcast. Rebecca did a knitalong last year, and created about 8 tutorials for the sweater. They’re really helpful because while Midori has some videos, there is no speaking, or clear explanation for some of the stitches. Just thought I’d pass this along! Happy Knitting! 🤩

As someone who works as an illustrator I love when people draw for fun. You don't get good at art without making art, same as knitting. I've run drawing classes for beginners and everyone is always like "oh I'm terrible" and I have to remind them "well if you were perfect you wouldn't need to come to class!" (no artist is perfect, we all need to go to class more XD) Your drawing looked amazing! I hope you go back and enjoy yourself again!
Good luck with shawl time! Can't wait to see them all complete.

"I don't need more yarn.." the lies we tell ourselves, because of course we do! We always need more yarn.
I don't know if it was mentioned somewhere before, but if you do not mind stores like JoAnn's fabrics, while it's a chain, they do tend to have a good pattern selection and they are not expensive. And they always have coupons to make it even cheaper.

What an enjoyable podcast! You popped up on my home page and I am so glad I stopped by. You are one interesting person. I am amazed at all you accomplish in your life. BTW, I am a Milwaukee gal myself and loved “meeting” someone from where I live. I actually live near Pewaukee Lake now but was born and raised in MKE. I am probably old enough to be your grandmother and have struggled the last few years w/poor health. Trying to get back to my creative endeavors of knitting, crocheting, and watercolor painting. You have really motivated me to push forward. I love shawls and cannot wait to see what you produce. The shawl you were wearing on your thumbnail was gorgeous and is what attracted me to your podcast. I have just discovered Steven West but have been intimidated by his designs. My knitting skills are not very advanced but I am encouraged to give it a try. Thanks for the inspiration.. See you next time.

Girl, you's a hoot. Yes, just frog and reuse. Don't waste your fav yarn. Are you originally from NY? I'd only pay 16 bucks for a pattern I truly love if it's Vogue or another upscale name in patterns. I've bought old patterns or patterns 5 and under. I haven't bought patterns for a long long while so not sure generally how much patterns are now here in NY. I never had to print out a pattern. I just bought a pattern cut it out and commence sewing. Printing it out is an annoying step. And as you mentioned, the cost in Wisconsin? What took you to Wisconsin? I used to attend college in the neighboring state of Minnesota. Too cold. Home to NY which is cold but just not the way Minnesota is. I enjoy watching your videos. Happy 23!

I so relate to your experience with adult dance classes. It is such a journey to try and find classes that support growth as an adult dancer. I'm glad you're finding your joy there!

I always feel the same way when I select giveaway winners for my channel, too, lol. I draw in advance, but I record the spinner I use to select the winner and edit that into the video! I have really enjoyed your channel- I found you a few days ago and have been binge watching your episodes. Now I am all caught up! Can't wait for next month.

I'm so enjoying your podcasts! Your knitting projects are stunning. Gotta love Stephen West. Talk about creativity! Your attitude towards trying new things is inspiring. I know I tend to let the judgements about myself stifle and sometimes you just have to show up no matter what happens. You go girl. The drawing was so great so keep drawing, dancing and skating! Of course knitting, crochet ( that pillow!) and sewing. Your life seems full and I bet you make friends where ever you go!

A couple things: 1. I absolutely love your energy! I don't know how you feel when you record your podcasts, but it feels so natural and authentic...and FUN! I think you've definitely found your 'niche'. 2. I am super excited about the Ranunculus KAL! I've been playing with the idea of casting one on, it's nice to have something that I can research and plan for. I will definitely be part of that. Enjoy all that you're learning! It all sounds so exciting and I can't wait to see what you do!

Thank you so much! Part of the reason I don’t have a schedule is because I only want to record when I’m feeling up to it. And then I’m super excited and rambly ☺️🤣 I’m glad that excitement reads as fun and not crazed! Can’t wait to have you join the KAL! Lots of time to plan for just the right yarn combo!

Your pillow is absolutely amazing! Great job in being able to make the back work! There’s a paper shortage right now, so maybe that’s affecting the cost of getting it printed locally? Completely agree with what you were saying about that additional cost either way though. So inspired by you to FINALLY start a Stephen West shawl soon! I have so many of his patterns but have yet to do one. The challenge will be which to start first…the doodler, textures unite, woven chevrons, Chrysler, exploration station…

I am so happy to hear you went back to ballet. I teach ballet and when I have enough adults who are interested, I have class for them. Your teacher is so right. When the technique is there we can see it and we know that other things will definitely come back. You might not ever be the 20 year old dancer you were, but that’s not what’s important, the joy and release from just dancing is so worth it! When you are a dancer, it’s amazing how our bodies just need to dance!

I have the same kind of body fit issues, and my posture is worse as I age (in my late 50s now, with an office job that is too sedentary), I have found full bust adjustment and picking the size for my narrow shoulder/back measures is best. I will try the tip to pinch stitches from the back to accommodate larger arms and frontage (I am currently knitting a bottom up seamed tee, and will play with the numbers). Thank you for being so open regarding sizing issues, I do not like boxy on my body, and am getting back to garment knitting on a mature body, so I am looking for ways to fit the body I have now, and embrace my reality rather than hide in oversized garments. Even though you have been ill, I am amazed by your energy. Now that the worst of summer has passed 'Down under' I think getting out and knitting in parks after work or on the weekends during the Aussie autumn will be a healthy change for me, and hopefully I can have a positive experience engaging with strangers, your stories are so inspiring.

Fit is one of the hardest things for me to do. Especially as my body changes. But I’m glad you’ve found a combo that gets you close to what you want! Also crafting in nature is one of the most relaxing things! I hope you run into kind strangers during your excursions ☺️

Hi wow I think your goal to knit so many destinies shawls is amazing. Re sewing patterns, yes they are expensive but making the same one many times brings the price per garment down to an affordable amount.. I get a copy shop to print on A0 paper but don't cut that, I trace that onto very fine vilene (not the iron on one) that way it keeps the print one in tact.

As a knitter one of the benefits of garments is custom fits. I wish you had got the go-ahead to customize the top. I would probably frog it too!
