    Nice one! I always look forward to your videos and you never disappoint. I never realised the enable signals were so complicated on these cards, with the latching transistors and whatnot. On most of the laptops I fix the enable signals just come either straight from PGOOD of another power rail, from some logic gate or other big chips like the SMC on macbooks. Also shame about that PWM pin, crazy to think that they have a pin like that connected straight to the GPU die with no protection at all, where a bad fan cable or unfortunate accident could fry the whole thing. Ah well, still a great repair as always, keep them coming!

    You can lower the fan speed using a resistor that can lower 12v to 7v or 5v. Or better option is to use 12v buck convertor that is adjustable so you can adjust the output voltage so it can be mounted to the graphic card via hot glue

  • @dciking
    @dciking 3 года назад +7

    The name for that circuit, i think, is ENB-RST or "enable-reset". The signal that resets the latching of the enable signal after it has been shut-off.

    One could fix the fan issue by adding a small micro-controller (such as attiny85) with a thermistor attached to the GPU heatsink. It could monitor the temperature and provide a PWM signal for the fan to run at the proper speed.

    I think what you're describing is a fault detection circuit. So the 2n7002 generic N-channel FET is part of a fault detection circuit that connects to the enable line. The circuit checks to see certain voltages and signals are present and either pulls the line up or down...

      @@TechCemetery Does that mean you check every single minuscule component on the board to find where the signal goes (some end up on the other side or other end!)?? Did you test the fan on a known good control circuit? Might have been the fan's onboard PWM circuit that got fried. Did you manually test to see if you had a pulse on the PWM line? You could also try a different blower on this card, see if you get a tach signal. I had a GTX 1060 where the guy had actually plugged the 4-pin fan connector in backwards, yet everything survived.

    Hi, lets talk coil whine for a moment! So Zotac GTX 1080 8GB mini and it supposedly has whine! Now is there something I should be aware of as I'm thinking of buying it used! Do I worry there's underlaying issues? Do I look to correct the whine with software? Do I care about it because likely it's inherent in most/all cards?

    • @TechCemetery
      @TechCemetery  3 года назад +1

      In my experience, a large amount of coil whine can be caused by a powerstage/MOSFET not functioning where the rest of the components then have to pick up the slack. Note this is very rare, most coil whine is just annoying with no real indication of the cards functionality.

It didn't like this when i explained to you all voltage rails are present but the display rail isn't so perhaps it's my lack of knowledge.
      Also i managed to revive another powercolor rx 570 with damaged/burn traces on 12v 8 pin. Lucky enough the vrms are still in good condition considering there's no fuse on this card.

      @@TechCemetery hi again, could you help me again, this time ASUS Strix RX 570. Im stuck because there's no datasheet or anything on some of the ICs.
      The problem is vram and memory controller only appears 2 sec after the CPU turned on and the vcore didn't even receive any, fan is not spinning. 12v, 5v, 3.3v, display rail showing normally as it should.
      Oh also there's red LED indicator on PCIE 8 pin connector that keep light up even when the CPU is off, is this actually normal?
      The phase controller(?) is using ASP1300 from DIGI+, and idk what is this 8915FN from ITE.
      12 ohm on display rail, 32 ohm to memory, 14 ohm to memory controller, vcore can't measure it, no short on 12v both 8 pin and pcie, no short on 1.8, 3.3v, and 5v

    pardon my ignorance, but the card seemed stable for games? can a custom fan curve be applied to prevent the fan running at max speed?

    • @astonlamb6491
      @astonlamb6491 3 года назад +1

      No fan connection is not detected by gpu. So it will only run at its full speed with no pwm signal .

    • @level8473
      @level8473 3 года назад +1

      just buy a pwm controller that u can hook up to the gpu fans

    • @TechCemetery
      @TechCemetery  3 года назад +2

      At the moment the card can run at full load, but like the other comments mentioned, the card can no longer control its own fan speed or read the fan RPM and so the fan speed would have to be controlled externally.

    Hello! Did you ever check, in a case like this, for a faulty capacitor on the side of the GPU? From an engineering point of view, it looks really awful to connect the PWM signal (almost) directly to the fan

    • @TechCemetery
      @TechCemetery  3 года назад +1

      On some cards, it's based off of VCC on uP9511p. I'm not sure where it's generated on this one.

      @HGEADAK 3 года назад

      @@TechCemetery From the datasheet it looks like its generated from the chip itself since it says to not connect the enable to a power source but I am not sure

      @@HGEADAK VCC is generated by the 5V rail through a resistor. On an RTX 3080 Gaming OC, that 5V VCC passes to some component (resistor I'm guessing) and then becomes the 2.4V enable.

      @@TechCemetery Thank you anyways, and thanks for the attempt, but from what I heard, cpu or gpu can degrade from extreme overclocking enough so it can no longer work at its stock frequency, and the only way of fixing it is by replacing the chip, and no, I do not have the tools to do it, or even know where to get the chip, I also heard that thoose chips are expensive, if I had money I would just buy a new gpu ffs.
      Thank you for even responding, I hoped that another solution exists, I think that the best solution is to keep it at lower clocks and deal with it.
