My wife used to think she was part Native American because her mother thought one of their ancestors was Native American. Then we looked at their genealogy and family history and it turns out that one of their ancestors was _killed by_ a Native American, and that somehow got misconstrued as having Native American ancestory.

Most of us are mestizos, meaning almost all of us have native blood, just because our native blood crosses the American boarder doesn’t mean our ancestors didn’t exist long before colonization, long before boarders existed. Have you seen where Mexico City is on a world map? The Aztecs were not in the USA. Also, most Mexicans today are heavily mixed between European and Native Ancestry. The only few true native American mexicans left live in small tribal towns in the jungle.

"I'm American", people know exactly what that means, and where he's from. In the United States when you say "Native American", there's only a few select tribes that are part of that title. And all those tribes are within the borders of the USA. So yes, though a percentage of the Mexican population can be considered Native American in the technical anthropological sense, they're not in the practical sense. Having lived in Latin America I can tell your first hand the "Native Americans" don't even use that term for themselves. They call themselves "indigenas" or "Indios". The word America itself is a European word and didn't exist in this continent prior to the arrival of Spanish explorers.

I mean she probably id part southern Native American since most Mexicans do have native blood. But she most definitely wouldn’t be Apache. Personally I’m like 15-20% Diné (Navajo) then like 5% miscellaneous southern Native American. My great grandfather was Mexican and was a mix of Hispanic, southern native and Western African. Which is pretty typical for a Mexican. So she is probably still Native American just no native to any lands in the USA. But it still is kinda messed up to pretend to be Apache.
