    Definition:
A valve is a mechanical device that controls and regulates the flow of fluid and pressure within a system or process.
    The function of Valves:
    1. Stopping and starting fluid flow
    2. Varying (throttling) the amount of fluid flow
    3. Controlling the direction of fluid flow
    4. Regulating downstream system or process pressure
    5. Relieving component or piping overpressure
    Types of Valves:
    1. Gate Valve
    2. Globe Valve
    3. Ball Valve
    4. Plug Valves
    5. Diaphragm Valves
    6. Reducing Valve
    7. Pinch Valve
    8. Butterfly Valve
    9. Needle Valve
    10. Swing Check Valve
    11. Lift Check Valve
    12. Relief Valve

Regarding the Globe Valve diagram: Is the fluid flow backwards? Fluid should enter the lower chamber of valve body, up through opening in valve seat, and outleting through the upper chamber.
With current orientation: Fluid pressure will impose a counter active force while trying to open the valve (many globe valves have arrows on them to display direction of flow).

That is correct. Also when you close the valve there should be no pressure on the shaft seal.
