▶️Rotary motion valves are fast acting valves that only require 90 degrees (1/4 turn) of rotation to move from the fully open to fully closed position. Examples of quarter turn valves include the ball, butterfly and plug type valves.
Linear motion valves act more slowly than rotary motion valves. The disc is moved in a linear direction with relation to the seat. Examples of linear motion valves include the gate and globe type valves.
What follows is a short summary of characteristics of each valve type.
How Ball Valve Works
¼ turn. Fast acting. Open and close only. Low pressure drop across the valve.
How Butterfly Valve Works
¼ turn. Fast acting. Open, close and throttling. Low pressure drop across the valve.
How Diaphragm Valve Works
Linear motion. Open, close and throttling. Low pressure drop across the valve.
How Gate Valve Works
Linear motion. Open and close only. Low pressure drop across the valve.
How Globe Valve Works
Linear motion. Open, close and throttling. Medium pressure drop across the valve.
How Needle Valve Works
Linear motion. Open, close and throttling. Very fine flow control.
How Pinch Valve Works
Linear motion. Open, close and throttling (between 10 and 95% of flow capacity). Very low pressure drop across the valve.
How Plug Valve Works
¼ turn. Fast acting. Open and close only. Low pressure drop across the valve.
How Relief Valve Works
Linear motion. Opens proportionally to the amount of over-pressure applied.
How Safety Valve Works
Linear motion. Opens fully in the event of over-pressure, or is closed fully.

Very well explained. It's amazing what you learn when you go back to basics. Excellent video!
One of the best and most comprehensively taught lessons on RUclips.
I have watched a few of your videos. They are really good. Thank you!
Thank you for creating and sharing these videos. Very clear, concise and interesting. Great work!
Thank you for your tremendous effort of making this video. It's very well summarised and very infomative.
You're welcome!
Wow! This was very well explained. I understood it better here than how my lecturer explained it. Thank you very much
Thank you so much for all the videos you prepared. Excellent work and very helpful.
Extremely good explanation. Clears concepts.
Very nice video, it covers a whole lot of the valve spectrum. It's also very clear, thank you.
Clear, concise and quite informative.
Taking me back to fluid mechanics class. Informative.
Thank you very much for making such amazing videos. I thoroughly understand the things that my professor didn't really elaborated. Especially today I'm learning online because of this virus and learning engineering online is tough.
Thank very much. I'm a 2yr marine engineering student and your videos really helped me.
Good to hear!
Thank you for providing clear visual and precise information
Thank you, I learnt a whole lot from this video
Nice Video.Totally offsets all my previous valve tutorials video
such a great video, mate.
thank you!
You are a rock .... Thanks for your new easy way of learning
Thank you sir for the video, really2 help me out with my studying at Universiti for oil&gas course
This is very very good. Learn everything about values usage here
Grazie mille per il tuo aiuto, ottimo lavoro!
Thank you for Your short Education about Valve, its realy help!
Greetings from indonesia, hope you always have good day sir
Thank you for the video very useful ..needed to refresh my memory for a new job and this done the trick
Great!
Excellent explanation. Thanks for the video.!!
EXCELENT CONTENT, VERY WELL DONE! JUST WHAT I NEEDED! CHEERS! 👏👏👏👍👍👍😀😀😀
Needle valve is the answer. Indeed the number of turns is directly proptional to the flowrate of fluid passing through. And with proper modelling, we can create a model which can perfectly optimize the output parameters of the valve, the output parameters being (the flowrate of the fluid). Thanks Savree 💞💞💞🔥🔥🔥🕊️
This is a great video…very informative and the visuals are so helpful…I’m studying for my d2…thank you!
What's a d2?
Very useful brief explanation
Awesome video!! Thank you
Tomorrow I've got an interview with a valve company.. learnt a lot through your video.. thank you
Best video! Thank you so much!
Very good video!!! Thanks!
exactly what I needed
nice video. simple and informative
Awesomely informative. Thanks
Our pleasure!
I learned a lot about valve application today
Very good video!
This is my favourite channel ♥️
GOOD BASIC INFORMATION ABOUT ISOLATION VALVES, GREAT WORK DONE.
Why does pressure drop in the globe valve?
Impressive valvementship!
this one is a very good video. Very useful material. like.
Nice explanation
Great efforts. Thanks.
well explained video about the valves😍
One of the best video. Great effort 👍🏾 do u deliver all these valves?
Great video. Thanks
great, thanks, power full
Thanks ... Very good material... I wish you add characterized ball valve and triple eccentric butterfly valve.
Thank You. Good information.
Thanks savree. 💞💞
Thanks for the info.!
Excellent animation. It would be nice if you could upload a video on liquid ring compressors
Great .
You did well , go ahead .
I will subscribe to the channel immediately .
Well explained.. Please make video on types of steam traps used in Industry
Excellent presentation. All my questions were answered
Glad it was helpful!
Cool! Thank you!
Outstanding vid
Thank you for the informative video, i would like to know what is the disadvantages of the diaphragm and pinch valves
great explanation.
Excellent video thanku💪🏿💪🏿💪🏿
Thanks sir kinds of information...
AMAZING !
Simply.... great!
Many thanks!
I liked to continue study an equipment because of this video
wow, so nice. thanks
Thanks for sharing 😌
You the NORTH!!
Thanks for sharing 🙂
Great video
thanks for sharing ,this is ketavalve manufacture
Thanks a lot mate.
Great little peace of repetition for me!
very nice information
GREAT VIDEO THANKS
Glad you enjoyed it
Do you have some videos about TRIM valves? Could you upload?
Thanks for your video
nice knowledge
very interest lecture on valve.
I've seen ur video that's a great and results solid grapes... I am looking for types of evaporators that frequently used in industry
If anyone have required this type of valve plz contact us
Very good video. Only comment I have is that butterfly valves CAN be used in high pressure and high flow scenarios. At my work we have 2 of them in a 100+/- bar system with immense amount of gas flow. They are used to regulate flow over 2 heat exhangers
Why does pressure drop in the globe valve?
Thanks very much
Thanks!
Great Video. Kindly make more maritime videos
Excellent
very good
thank you
All the best .. john
nice video
NICE
Gate valves are notorious for the gate aperture 'gunking' up and not shutting off
For regulating flow at low pressures, like in a simple garden irrigation system, can a ball Vavle not be used?
Nice
good!
Thanks
Sir, if possible provide transcript of each video in PDF format in respective video discription. so, we can read that's all. I am in last year of chemical engineering
Otherwise it's fine.....you are already too good.....
Hi.. chemical engineer
Do you have a video on hydraulic pumps
Hi, would a small ball valve be suitable as a gravity fed petcock? As no real pressure is needed, I am needing a new petcock and would prefer to make myself a ball valve for this as a lathe project while building the chopper. I can see no reason why it wouldn't be suitable but you may know better
Good Day Sir.
Thanks for the video.
Is it possible to do a video on the symbols to read P&ID diagrams or if there are any good sources if you could direct me to, would be highly appreciated.
Kind Regards
Limon
Thanks
surprised to see < 100k subscribers
Yeah me too :(
We have a trick up our sleeve. Watch this space because an interview with Learn Engineering is coming in February...
Thank you ,is in ENGLISH!!!!
