    I always thought this was supposed to be a tragic end to her career and I thought that without seeing it. But it really is a brilliant film and she is incredibly good in it. In fact it's one of her best performances.

    Only this lady could do it all and do it all well - she always puts her heart and soul in all her performances. Not one bad song, bad movie or bad dance routine. Unbelievable! Just unbelievable! God Bless Judy - I know you're singing up there over the rainbow.

    Judy is frighteningly great in this scene . Totally believable with her dialogue spilling out as if it were spontaneous . Judy never gave the future dialogue away . When she spoke ( as when she sang )she keeps the emotion with her words fully and doesn’t leave that emotion until the next word in her dialogue ( lines ) . The movie contained dialogue of a soap opera dribble but dirk and Judy elevate the material to hold your attention .

    If you're a Judy fan, you MUST see this (avail on DVD and TCM runs it occassionally as well). Judy's acting is indeed STELLAR throughout this whole movie; many brilliant scenes like this one. Her performance in this entire movie was Oscar worthy.

    I had no idea she was capable of something like this...but she was, and boy oh boy...she was really something else, wasn't she? Much more than a pretty lil' gal, and much, much, much than a drunken fallen angel. I'm very glad I've seen this.

    Wow! What an intense scene. And Judy has the trump line at the end of it. It brings a tear to my eye everytime I watch this. How many mothers and fathers have played scenes like this, in reality, themselves. This scene really makes one think. Especially if you happen to be going through a similar situation when you see it. Again, wow!

    Judy's acting in this movie absolutely blew me away! It made me wonder, what are they selling? A film, or the real story of Judy Garland? But all in all, wonderful movie, and the acting was incredible.

    The description of this clip needs to be corrected: Garland DOES NOT play "drunken concert singer." There is ONE crucial scene where her character has too much to drink. But, the theme of the movie has nothing AT ALL to do with alcoholism.
    It's about a woman who gave up her illegitimate son at birth and who now
    wants to enter his life.
    A "fan" should know better.

    An excellent scene well played by Ms. Garland. Very intense. The last few lines say it all (for me) Mr. Bogarde "He's my son, and I'm going to keep him!" Ms. Garland " There's just one thing we seem to both have forgotten...He's my son, too....I made him...." After that, there is no argument left...IMHO, the Lady wins, hands down! Everytime I watch Judy's performance of this scene, I want to stand up and applaude...This is truly a superb piece of acting by both of them. But, especially Judy!:-)

    that's how I felt! I thought she was a pretty good actress, but I realized, right in the moment when I was reading your comment, that it was probably because mgm was sort of holding her back. She wasn't up to par when she was contracted to them b/c of her crazy schedules they made her keep and the prescription drugs. And the fact that they shot down her self esteem. Notice how in A Star is Born and Judgement at Nuremburg and this movie also that she gives some pretty outstanding performences :)

    The descriptive is incorrect; she was not a "drunken concert singer." She got drunk on one occasion in the film for one particular reason. One drinking episode doesn't a drunk make. Good grief.

    • @elspethcoogan1499
      @elspethcoogan1499 7 лет назад +4

      SummerSolstice2013 You are spot on. Alas, this inaccuracy about Jenny Bowman (Judy's character in this film) was the very same made about Judy herself who was (often still is) referred to as alcoholic and a drug addict. Judy was neither and in the sense of taking recreational drugs, which is deliberately implied within the assertion of one being a drug addict, she never did. Judy was addicted to prescription medication, both psychologically and physically but never got the help she so badly needed.

    Fab actress, I think three films stand out, this one, A Star is Born and A Child is Waiting. She could sing, act and was a pretty good dancer! Not much she couldn't do really apart from never doing a play to which she stated quite a few times in interviews that she wouldn't mind doing.

  • @mmdillon1

    @Larry2463 In this case, Larry, the lady doesn't win. She gave up her son for her career, so his father (and his father's wife) raised him. Just because Jenny Bowman suddenly wants her son, doesn't mean she can take him. It demonstrates the huge sacrifice the performer made for her stage; that's why this movie was originally titled "The Lonely Stage."

    it was the pills that doctors gave her that made her behave odd she couldn't help it, they made her off balanced chemically, it wasn't from her drinking

    I have to disagree with the person who posted this video. Judy didn't play a drunken singer she was drunk once it was before the last number of the picture. Judy sonered up and went on stage & knocked the audience dead.

    Are there nude photos of Dirk Bogarde?

  • @mmdillon1
    @mmdillon1 14 лет назад

    @michaeljohndudley She was a hopeless romantic with lousy taste in men (or maybe there aren't all that many truly good ones out there -- I don't know). Bogarde was just another worm who wasn't strong enough for Judy. She also happened to be rather tough on her fellas -- as she was a very needy child in an adult's body!
