I always thought this was supposed to be a tragic end to her career and I thought that without seeing it. But it really is a brilliant film and she is incredibly good in it. In fact it's one of her best performances.
Only this lady could do it all and do it all well - she always puts her heart and soul in all her performances. Not one bad song, bad movie or bad dance routine. Unbelievable! Just unbelievable! God Bless Judy - I know you're singing up there over the rainbow.
Judy is frighteningly great in this scene . Totally believable with her dialogue spilling out as if it were spontaneous . Judy never gave the future dialogue away . When she spoke ( as when she sang )she keeps the emotion with her words fully and doesn’t leave that emotion until the next word in her dialogue ( lines ) . The movie contained dialogue of a soap opera dribble but dirk and Judy elevate the material to hold your attention .
Judy's angry voice is amazing! They said she could strike fear in even the strongest man in the world and can give a Look that could freeze a person! She is MARVELOUS!
If you're a Judy fan, you MUST see this (avail on DVD and TCM runs it occassionally as well). Judy's acting is indeed STELLAR throughout this whole movie; many brilliant scenes like this one. Her performance in this entire movie was Oscar worthy.
I had no idea she was capable of something like this...but she was, and boy oh boy...she was really something else, wasn't she? Much more than a pretty lil' gal, and much, much, much than a drunken fallen angel. I'm very glad I've seen this.
Wow! What an intense scene. And Judy has the trump line at the end of it. It brings a tear to my eye everytime I watch this. How many mothers and fathers have played scenes like this, in reality, themselves. This scene really makes one think. Especially if you happen to be going through a similar situation when you see it. Again, wow!
Judy's acting in this movie absolutely blew me away! It made me wonder, what are they selling? A film, or the real story of Judy Garland? But all in all, wonderful movie, and the acting was incredible.
The description of this clip needs to be corrected: Garland DOES NOT play "drunken concert singer." There is ONE crucial scene where her character has too much to drink. But, the theme of the movie has nothing AT ALL to do with alcoholism. It's about a woman who gave up her illegitimate son at birth and who now wants to enter his life. A "fan" should know better.
An excellent scene well played by Ms. Garland. Very intense. The last few lines say it all (for me) Mr. Bogarde "He's my son, and I'm going to keep him!" Ms. Garland " There's just one thing we seem to both have forgotten...He's my son, too....I made him...." After that, there is no argument left...IMHO, the Lady wins, hands down! Everytime I watch Judy's performance of this scene, I want to stand up and applaude...This is truly a superb piece of acting by both of them. But, especially Judy!:-)
this movie is amazing!! i got it yesterday and i just thought that she was amazing in this movie especially in the situtiation she was in real life. i adont know how she does it. shes the best!! i just didnt get what happened at the end of the movie. :s
that's how I felt! I thought she was a pretty good actress, but I realized, right in the moment when I was reading your comment, that it was probably because mgm was sort of holding her back. She wasn't up to par when she was contracted to them b/c of her crazy schedules they made her keep and the prescription drugs. And the fact that they shot down her self esteem. Notice how in A Star is Born and Judgement at Nuremburg and this movie also that she gives some pretty outstanding performences :)
Wow !!! This is FAB Acting !!! Was it acting though? It is so natural and moving and believable that it almost seems like a voyeur fimed it. Wonderful !!!
The descriptive is incorrect; she was not a "drunken concert singer." She got drunk on one occasion in the film for one particular reason. One drinking episode doesn't a drunk make. Good grief.
SummerSolstice2013 You are spot on. Alas, this inaccuracy about Jenny Bowman (Judy's character in this film) was the very same made about Judy herself who was (often still is) referred to as alcoholic and a drug addict. Judy was neither and in the sense of taking recreational drugs, which is deliberately implied within the assertion of one being a drug addict, she never did. Judy was addicted to prescription medication, both psychologically and physically but never got the help she so badly needed.
Fab actress, I think three films stand out, this one, A Star is Born and A Child is Waiting. She could sing, act and was a pretty good dancer! Not much she couldn't do really apart from never doing a play to which she stated quite a few times in interviews that she wouldn't mind doing.
@Larry2463 In this case, Larry, the lady doesn't win. She gave up her son for her career, so his father (and his father's wife) raised him. Just because Jenny Bowman suddenly wants her son, doesn't mean she can take him. It demonstrates the huge sacrifice the performer made for her stage; that's why this movie was originally titled "The Lonely Stage."
it was the pills that doctors gave her that made her behave odd she couldn't help it, they made her off balanced chemically, it wasn't from her drinking
I have to disagree with the person who posted this video. Judy didn't play a drunken singer she was drunk once it was before the last number of the picture. Judy sonered up and went on stage & knocked the audience dead.
She did not play a "drunken" anything in the movie. I don't know why you wrote that she did; are you confusing this movie with "The Valley of the Dolls"?
She was drunk during the making of the film though - on one occasion she failed to turn up at the Palladium where a whole theatre full of extras were awaiting her - my dad was in the band.
@michaeljohndudley She was a hopeless romantic with lousy taste in men (or maybe there aren't all that many truly good ones out there -- I don't know). Bogarde was just another worm who wasn't strong enough for Judy. She also happened to be rather tough on her fellas -- as she was a very needy child in an adult's body!
I always thought this was supposed to be a tragic end to her career and I thought that without seeing it. But it really is a brilliant film and she is incredibly good in it. In fact it's one of her best performances.

She was an artistic genius. Her expressiveness and emotional depth was astounding.
I love this scene it's one of my favorites. I wish she had made more dramatic films she was good at it.
She makes fighting look so classy 😍😍 was there anything she couldn't do 😻
A great actress. NEver won the oscar...
@@Fonseca429 Oscar wasn’t big enough for her.
What a wonderful actress Judy was!
Judy was a great great actress!
Why is everyone shocked?
My God, what an actress!
England was the perfect place for Judy to hit her stride. All that British repression set her off, and BEAUTIFULLY! Bravo!
Not only a GREAT singer, but a darn good actress.
Judy's angry voice is amazing! They said she could strike fear in even the strongest man in the world and can give a Look that could freeze a person! She is MARVELOUS!

Oscars don't mean anything.
"You need him and I want him and you want him and I need- he's not bone my god he's a child! Just brilliant!
She could still do it all at this point!
I had no idea she was capable of something like this...but she was, and boy oh boy...she was really something else, wasn't she? Much more than a pretty lil' gal, and much, much, much than a drunken fallen angel. I'm very glad I've seen this.
She’s so amazing I love her
It's a shame she passed away too soon.A true actress and singer.

Judy is THE BEST!!!

It's about a woman who gave up her illegitimate son at birth and who now

Richard - you are entirely excellent.
my absolute favourite film, with my two favourite stars !! A triumph

MGM used her, abused her and underutilized her.
Wow !!! This is FAB Acting !!! Was it acting though? It is so natural and moving and believable that it almost seems like a voyeur fimed it. Wonderful !!!
the best scene in judys carrier
For my money the scene in the hospital was her greatest scene ever.
I want more :D. If only somebody could load up the whole movie..:)
Thanks a lot for this :)!

Dirk was a GORGEOUS homosexual!
@GubbioTwo you are right but i also think she does it because she wanted to work on her career.
1:46-2:58 *in my Robot Chicken!M Night voice* What a twist!
according the to sid luft book she was so high on ritalin during the whole movie
If Sid says it it’s not true, he wasn’t even there during the shoot. How could he even know, he wasn’t there.
well the poor girl was given and addicted to amphetamines- uppers, downers her whole career@@lenwelch2195
i have been looking for this movie for a long time. do you have the whole movie? where can i get it? it's hard to find the dvd.
i know that, i knew people who knew judy
What is she saying at 1:57-2:02? I can never make out what she is saying.
"You with your grave demeanor. Or your Aunty Beth in Canterbury who's 40 years too late! What kind of life are you offering him?!"
There ya go.
👍🏻

at least three of judy's husbands were fruits.
discuss!
If you really want to believe that.

Are there nude photos of Dirk Bogarde?
@michaeljohndudley She was a hopeless romantic with lousy taste in men (or maybe there aren't all that many truly good ones out there -- I don't know). She was so tired. she looks like she is 50..
Judy was a grossly manipulative horror of a woman.
Your mama
could someone try to put the whole movie on because i really want to see it please :)
