Whitewing…the woman who has no trouble acing a training course or chasing off a herd of dogs, but who can’t ever seem to keep her relationships in a state of peace. From her childhood friends to her parents to her mate and her daughters, it seems like everyone is always falling apart around her. Poor girl.

To everyone who has commented with a suggestion for another character focused video, please do! I don't have a strict schedule for when these will come in between other Spiels videos, but I really enjoy doing them and I'd love to hear who you want to hear about.
I'd love to hear your thoughts on ashfur, due to how complex of a character he was. Or maybe Reedwhisker.
I'd be curious to look back over either Shadowstar or someone even more obscure like Runningwind (if there's even much to cover there)
a berrynose vid would be interesting!!! hes a character that isnt very popular but i like him bc his characterization overall is very strong and theres a lot of interesting facets abt him that the fandom doesnt rly explore (like the whole situation w him and poppyfrost, him looking up to brambleclaw/star, his general.....unpopularity among his clanmates lol)

i wish current warriors had more of these background relationships/drama. it makes the clan feel so much more alive. it would be nice to have an arc or super edition that focuses on clan/interaction centered drama instead of something grand
Hopfully the Starless Clan is going in that direction!
One of my favorite Whitewing moments is when Lionblaze calls her essentially incorruptible and impossible to ever be a Dark Forest trainee. It's such a minor line, but it's so telling about how everyone sees her. And I'm honestly a little bummed she's not, like, a deputy or something. She's a great warrior and would make a great leader. I know that in the newer books only the protagonists get to be special when it comes to ThunderClan, but come on...
I like to think that Whitewing (then Whitekit) was named after Brightheart’s mentor Whitestorm. Also her and Dovewing having the same suffix is so sweet. I love when family members have matching suffix/prefixes (like Hollyleaf and Leafpool).
Love love LOVE how you’ve elaborated on background characters like Whitewing/Birchfall - it feels so much more fleshed out by connecting all of these narratives together, which otherwise fall by the wayside given their background nature. They feel like much stronger characters with just this little bit of attention and extrapolation.
It's a shame, because when I think back on Whitewing the most memorable scene I can remember for her is the one where she told Dovewing off for not being interested in Bumblestripe and basically directly stated "You're a girl, therefore you are socially obliged to provide kittens to grow the clan, irrespective of how you feel about it." Which, yeah, could be dismissed as the authors grabbing the most convenient available mouthpiece to air their sexist bad takes, but it's still frustrating from an in-character perspectives because yeah, otherwise she was a very supportive mother figure.
I wonder if it's because, back when she was Dovewing's age, the amount of she-cats in ThunderClan was actually really low? Maybe she holds a slightly more traditionalist viewpoint because she grew up in a time where the only queen was Ferncloud and most of their kits were dying, and most of the warriors were toms.
Sexist and also indirectly low key homophobic.
I love Whitewing! Her relationships with her parents and kits are so interesting to read. I remember the scene in omen of the stars where Lionblaze considers her the least evil as opposed to Thornclaw being the most evil.
I'd really like to hear your thoughts on Thornclaw since he wasn't given much characterization aside from being the patrol guy until he meets his mean wife Blossomfall and has their gaggle of children

At least she has the benefit of being related to firestar/cloudtail, and having fan favorite daughters. Her husband birch boy on the other hand, I legit can't remember jack about him, besides being ashfur's apprentice,very forgetful character.
It really is unfortunate, the most I remember about him is that he was the youngest cat to remember the old forest and the traveling to the new territories (I think).
Like she said there was also a time where he hung out with the iconic Berrynose constantly, so maybe youcould remember him for that?

I really love whitewing, super underrated! I also like to imagine (headcanon obviously) that she definitely was also close to firestar's family since they are related! Maybe how Firestar would show a lot of warmth to his nephew's daughter and whitewing also being close to leafpool and squirrelflight since those are her cousins and they are very much the same age!

Finally! Someone talks about whitewing. I love her so much, and i thought it was great that, in omen of the stars, when ivypool was spending so much time was spending so much time with her father in the dark forest. Dovewing was spending time with whitewing. Maybe i mostly liked her at the start because of her parents and also that she made it possible for brackenfur to prove himself as a mentor again, but even when i first read about her at the end of firestars quest, when she is exited about leafkit and squirrelkit being born. I knew she was great.

But squirrel is a warrior earlier even without birch paw making whitewing wait.

@@skygazer6082 Yes She is a little older than squirrelflight and leafpool. At the timeskip in the end of firestars quest, She is already an older kit in the nursery while squirrel and leaf was just born. (Edit: Maybe it was because squirrelflight was on a journey where she learned alot, or maybe since firestars quest was written after new prophecy it just wasn’t decided who was oldest)
I do love that Whitewing waited until they could become warriors at the same time, that's a really sweet thing to do even though she wanted to be a warrior so much
I've always loved Whitewing and Birchfall. There are few warriors who are as calm and levelheaded as Whitewing but also outspoken. She's very unerrated
I said it last time and I'll say it again, Birchfall and Whitewing are my absolute favorite background characters in the whole series, not just as a pair but as their own standalone characters, and I NEVER see people talking about them! Tracking what backgrounders do throughout the whole series, and filling in the gaps yourself, it keeps me more engaged than most of the main characters honestly.
I always feel so bad, because when I’m listing my favourite characters, I always forget whitewing. But then, when I remember about her, I realize that she is probably my fourth or fifth favourite character ever.
Whitewing has always been one of my favourites. I've always thought that her practical and thoughtful personality would make her a good choice for deputy :)
I always really liked Whitewing. She has a beautiful name, a beautiful and honestly underused design, and her personality feels unique even though I can't really explain why.
Whitepaw should not be overlooked...glad she is featured here.. Her comfort with humility is her greatest strength, helping others to grow.
I love it when you talk about background characters. Their dynamics with others and their personalities. It always makes me see warriors differently. My favorite background character headcanon is the relationship between Twigbranch and her foster family, Lilyheart, Honeyfur, and Leafshade.
I LOVE it when you describe and flesh out these background characters! Maybe a video on Sorreltail next? I think she is fascinating, and no one talks about her! Just thinking about her familial relations is just super intriguing. The fact she has half-siblings is already a lot, but then you have both her parents dead as an apprentice, and not long after her brothers Rainwhisker and Sootfur die too. And *then* , Molepaw, Honeyfern, and Seedpaw all end up dying too. She is surrounded by grief and tragedy, and still she pushes through! I just really like her :)
Sorreltail is great! And her brothers really need more love too.

I like to picture Dovewing introducing her kits to Whitewing at gatherings once they’re apprenticed and Whitewing being an absolutely doting grandmother.
Small correction. Whitewing didn't become a warrior at the same time as Birchfall, but before him. She delayed long enough for Berrynoae and his siblings to become apprentices so Birch wouldn't be alone.
But she did get her name first
There are actually a couple instances in the third and fourth arcs where she's covered in blood from battles and assures everybody it's not her own, so we can also deduce that she's a good fighter!

This is so well done! I wonder if Birchfall was susceptible to the Dark Forest since both his mate and their kits together outshine him. (Whitewing going from an all-star apprentice to a well-liked warrior, Dovewing being a (formerly) great hunter and prophecy cat, and Ivypool being one of the best fighters)

This honestly made me love Whitewing more. I already loved her a lot, but this made me excited to develop her and Birchfall's relationship in my own Po3/OoTS rewrite :)

Coming back to this older video because for some reason I never saw it but... The new prophecy was my first arc i ever read of the series and I personally really enjoyed whitewing she's been one of my favorite background characters since ^^

Anyway, for a character I'd like to hear discussed... maybe Darkstripe or Longtail? Both of them are such interesting first-arc cats that just get the shaft from arc 2 onward, and Longtail could've been a good deputy candidate!
I'm not sure if you take suggestions, but I would love one of these about Tallstar someday! I know his early life is covered in his super edition (which is one of the best books of the series imo) but I wonder if there's a way to connect what we know about his past to contextualize his later actions as leader. I just thought it was so funny to remember him from the main series as being peaceable and deferring to other clans, then read his super edition which is largely about him attempting murder

Id love to hear your view on the way a clan gives the task of building nests and barriers in the clan like for brackenfur and dustpelt. And during bramblestars storm when dustpelt died does brackenfur teach another cat to build or does every member know how to build and brackenfur and dustpelt were just the best builders out of everyone else?

To be honest I didn’t really like Squirrelflight that much because Whitewing deserved to be a warrior earlier than squirrelflight because since she went to the journey to meet Midnight she didn’t really finish her training nor did her apprentice test - Whitewing lost her parents to Twolegs and rivalry. Whitewing deserved to be a warrior more than squirrelflight.

I was shocked to know that Shrewpaw and Whitewing are siblings ;-;
They aren't siblings. Shrewpaw's parents are Dustpelt and Ferncloud while Whitewing's parents are Brightheart and Cloudtail. The closest potential relationship they have is that Ferncloud and Cloudtail were foster siblings when they were kits, since Brindleface decided to feed Cloudtail until he could eat prey, but that relationship died off pretty quickly, and Ferncloud and Cloudtail were never shown to view each other as siblings. Otherwise, none of their parents have any relation to each other, so they aren't even cousins.

@@Sunnyfall Well, one of her parents has a family relation with Ferncloud, and that’s Brightheart. Not many people know this, but Frostfur and Brindleface were sisters, being born from Robinwing and Fuzzypelt’s second litter (the first one were supposedly composed of kits named Cherrypaw and Chestnutkit). Frostfur was Brightheart’s mother and Brindleface was Ferncloud’s mother, making them first cousins. And Brightheart is Whitewing’s mother and Ferncloud is Birchfall’s mother… making Whitewing and Birchfall second cousins…
I still think they’re a cute couple however, and their own daughter Ivypool became mates with one of her own cousins. But I’m surprised no one in the fandom has realized this, especially since we know Brindleface and Frostfur are sisters since Robinwing metions them as her kits in Bluestar’s Prophecy and that Ferncloud and Brightheart are their daughters since the first arch
