  • Finally, here we are in the Power of Three arc! This one is a nostalgia point for many fans, and it has my personal favorite cast in the series. But Power of Three has a very slow and wonky pace with very few plot points, something that is perhaps never more true than it is in The Sight. 30% of its time is spent watching kits bounce about camp and three different tiny and mostly meaningless events are crammed into the last few chapters for some climactic feelings. Though the very worst sin might have to do with the treatment of Jaypaw, especially in comparison to what his sister Hollypaw gets while traveling on a parallel journey.

I always liked the subtle rivalry between Lionpaw and Berrypaw and the probable jealousy Lionpaw would feel with Berrypaw getting to spend more time with his father, Brambleclaw, being his apprentice

This might be last Warriors video that I've ever seen. RUclips probably will be blocked in Russia very soon. And I'm happy that it was about The Sight. I adore Power of Three cast, especially Jayfeather. Thank you so much for your work. I really hope all of this political madness will be over soon and I'll still be able to watch "Trip Through Time" about my favourite books.

6:24 That scene annoyed me SO MUCH when I read it as a kid, because it's so completely nonsensical to me. There could have been a million ways to write it, that didn't make Brightheart looks so stupid.
For example, Brightheart could have taken Jaypaw to clean the elders den because SHE wanted to hear about the difference between being blind and being able to see (hence asking Longtail, because he has experienced both), so she can more easily figure out what her new apprentice might need, compared to a cat with full sight. And to not let Jaypaw sit around in camp doing nothing, while also maybe teaching him about patience or something, she took him along.
Literally anything that wasn't "I'll have another blind cat explain blindness to this blind cat, because he probably doesn't know what being blind is like yet". It's not even like Longtail could give Jaypaw tips specifically about being a blind Warrior (so anything about hunting or fighting), because Longtail never was a blind Warrior, he retired immediately.
But still, Longtail COULD have given Jaypaw some actual good advice, instead of telling him that “smelling and hearing are useful senses too”. (Maybe he did and I forgot, it's been a decade since I read those books. xp) Like he could have given him some practical tips about the territory outside of camp (someplace Jaypaw hasn't really been yet, besides that little fox-adventure), or how to most effectively figure out new terrain, because he did have to familiarize himself with the new lake territory without his sight, which is what Jaypaw will have to do next as well. So he could have probably given him some helpful tips and insight that Brightheart couldn't as well as telling her, about places or routes that might take more time to memories, because it's especially tricky or something, so Brightheart would be aware of those possible difficulties as well.
tldr.: I think that scene is stupid and makes Brightheart and Longtail seem like idiots. But it's also been decades since I read it, so I could just completely misremember it. xp

Jayfeather being forced to become a medicine cat never sat right with me. I don't think he could have become a warrior, his lack of fighting ability makes him a dangerous libality when facing the other clans, or foxes, badges and birds of prey. But I don't like how they handled Leafpool and Spottedleaf pressuring him into being a medicine cat. Like you said, Brook's scene is way better.

Brightheart should've been a deputy instead of Brambleclaw and later a leader. First of al: Brightstar is the best leader name ever. Second: we would have a capable, disabled leader, like Crookedstar. Not only is she smart and a great warrior, but also she has experienced way more than other cats. She would always think twice on every decision like attack or journey, before acting because she knows the best of all what fast-careless decisions can bring. She also knows a little bit about beeing a medicine cat and is a mother so she can put herself in the shoes of every clan cat with understanding. But still she's be fierce when it comes to protecting her clan. I hate how Firestar straight up lied to her and never got her any other apprentice (even giving an apprentice to Bramble AFTER naming him a deputy wtf he did not deserve that honour).
But then again, disgusting ableism and marketing.

I loved PoT and it’s still one of my favorites along with DotC. Plus Hollyleaf is still my favorite character even after all these new books. I don’t really know in which book it was that my love for this arc really began and it’s really interesting to hear an in-depth analysis of the book, because most people sort of seem to lump The Sight and Dark River together when talking about the PoT.

I don’t think that I could reread this book, it’s honestly upsetting seeing Jaypaw being bullied into something he doesn’t want throughout the story. Especially on top of all the micro aggressions he has to go through, this just feels so depressing and awful when it’s focused on Jaypaw :(

Power of Three has the best protagonists and the best side plot ideas that unfortunately was either forgotten or had no payoff. I think Jayfeather is the "closest to perfect" protagonist; Hollyleaf should have been a "antagonist" longer; and Lionblaze could've been better if his size plots had a more lasting effect like his rivalry with Berrytail.

My main issue with this book is Jaypaw's whole arc. Besides all the stuff you mentioned about his blindness and being forced to become a medicine cat, the main reason I'm disappointed with his arc is that his mindset never really improves, so he never experiences any real growth beyond being a resentful emotional wreck. His moment with saving Poppypaw from death should have been the spark that caused him to feel at least some appreciation for his job. And it's made very clear that he does care about the well-being of his fellow cats. So why doesn't this translate to him recognizing how important the job of a medicine cat is? That's probably why Starclan and Leafpool's forcing him to be a medicine cat comes off as so egregious, because it seems to have served to make Jaypaw's life more miserable and the job of a medicine cat undesirable. It undermines the message of the book (which is kind of a shame, since I think Hollypaw's side of it was handled well), and makes the ending of Jaypaw saving the day unsatisfying and pointless when he doesn't even appreciate that honor.
Plus, it seems like when Jaypaw learns about the prophecy that he's about to go down a dark path through his powers. It's never followed up on, and I honestly don't think it should have been. It doesn't fit his character, and I kind of prefer the idea of Jaypaw turning out to be the most morally sound of the Three despite his crabbiness.

Ok ok, so about the fox kits, i kind of want to rant because this needs to be said (this rant is copy + pasted)
It's not a surprise that Warriors can be quite controversial at times. But one thing that has bothered me but has almost (if even) not EVER been spoken out about is the issue with making other species as antagonists.
Now, there is nothing wrong with this. Just like in animal documentaries and such, many animals can be seen as aggressive in media. But Warriors... well... they get quite carried away.
    Take, for example, this scenario:
The cats from the journey wonder why Midnight can speak, and they ask her how. This is her answer (page 295): “How is it you can speak to us?” he asked curiously.“I have traveled far, and many tongues have learned,” Midnight told him. “Tongues of other cats, who speak not same as you. Of fox and rabbit also.” She grunted. “They speak not of interest. Fox talk is all of kill. Rabbit has thistledown for brain.”
This is kind of odd considering foxes irl are just shy creatures that show the same pain and love we do, and care for their friends. Come on, Erins.
But in one case, Firestar takes it too far. When Spiderleg finds a dead fox on ThunderClan territory, the clan finds out there are cubs. Firestar (being the totally honorable warrior he is) says this (page 17:
“'It would be best to kill them quickly.' There was nothing malicious in the ThunderClan leader’s voice; Firestar had to do what was best for the Clan."
Ok, this is TOO FUCKING FAR. If it was 3 CAT kits who had lost their mother, Firestar would take them in. But with these fox kits Firestar is just like "Yeah, kill them please." THIS IS BULLSHIT!
I think the Erins forget that foxes have feelings and aren't "evil", they just want to survive. And when one of the fox kits tries to protect it's family by chasing away Jaykit, it is deemed as an evil creature that deserves death. Pretty fucked up, right?
Ferncloud even throws in THIS weird line (page 17):
“What should we do?” Ferncloud had emerged from the nursery. “We can’t let the forest be overrun by foxes! What about my kits?”
3 fox cubs. 3. FOX. CUBS. Even though the forest is overrun with an INVASIVE FUCKING SPECIES WHO IS RESPONSIBLE FOR MANY EXTINCT SPECIES AND LIVES IN CLANS, FOXES ARE THE ONE OVERRUNNING THE FOREST. MORE BULLSHIT! FOXES ARENT EVEN BIG, THEY ARE ONLY SLIGHTLY BIGGER THAN CATS AND HARDLY EVER KILL THEM! THE ERINS ARE JUST SPREADING MISINFORMATION NOW
The worst part is that these fox cubs are probably traumatized now, all thanks to a bunch of (literal) pussies who cant deal with a few fox kits who just want their mother, without being fucking ABSURD.
Well, that about clears up my rant. Anyone who disagrees with me can fight me in the comments, I'm not scared!

I totally agree with you, the handling of other species in Warriors has always annoyed me.

The thing about the foxes size is what really pissed me off. I don’t know much about animals myself but the cats act as though they’re the size of dogs when they’re really not that big. I don’t think badgers are that large either from the images I’ve seen but I could be wrong.

  • @awoum

About Jaypaw... I always felt wrong about how he was written in this book. Like, why couldn't he win that battle with that ShadowClan cat? He can read minds! Like Anya from Spy x Family, where she is able to avoid all the balls thrown at her because she can read her opponent's mind before he makes a move, I don't understand why Jaypaw couldn't do that. I see that as the plot forcing the character to chose certain action, and I find it dumb
To me, it would have been 100% better if he actually was a pretty competent warrior, and only decided to become medicine cat because of other reasons ('cause of his destiny, bc he likes helping cats, etc)

I've got a question regarding graphic novels and novella collections:
Since the entire thing about the graphic novels being divided into three smaller books started because of the artist not finishing all three arcs before the deadline, will you cover each arc in Graystripe's Adventure individually or all three books at once? I've noticed the newer graphic novels are thrice the length of the old books, and they're the same length as the colored reprints.
About novella collections, starting with Legends of the Clans, will you review all three books in the collection at once or spread them out across three months?
A wonderful addition to the trip through time!

    • @Sunnyfall
      @Sunnyfall  2 года назад +2

For the first graphic novels, I'll be covering them one section at a time to fit chronologically with how we were given them (with different books in between) and I'll be doing the same for the first several novellas, which we e-book exclusives released one at a time until they were eventually bound together in packs of three. I haven't decided yet whether or not I'll cover all three stories in one video once we get to the point where they were releasing the novellas as packs from the get-go; it will mostly be determined by whether or not I think all three stories can be effectively discussed in one video. But When the graphic novels start coming out at full-length, I will undoubtedly be covering those as one video.
