I talk with my hands often so I figured learning ASL would be a very useful. I don’t run into hearing impaired people often, but I want to speak it proficiently just in case.

I lived in Seattle in the 1980s when Starbucks was still new. The other one, SBC (Seattle Best Coffee), was at that time named Stewart Brothers Coffee. They renamed themselves when they became a franchise. In 1979, I lived in Moulins France for a while. As you know, LSF (French Sign Language) influenced ASL way back through Laurent Clerc. In France, seeing coffee made in the home with a small box grinder, I easily understood why we sign coffee the way we do. I work in a kitchen at a brewery. I could use sign to help customers there, like beer seltzer, wine, tap, ice, then like ingredients. Like no lettuce or add tomato and stuff like that.
hey! could you do a video of the best ways to get used to ASL syntax instead of, like.. signing as you would in English sentence structure? ie: sign I learn, instead of accidentally getting into the habit of "I learn sign language"? I'd super appreciate that! thank you!
I am a hard hearing and for me has been awesome to learn from you ASL. I already know Brazil’s sign language and there’s a lot of sign that are the same.
ASLMeredith I am a Kindergarten teacher in Brazil, in my university it requires sign language as a mandatory subject but before becoming mandatory I look for before before notice that I am a hard hearing, I mean I knew it that I wasn’t listening but I thought at that moment that was normal. I’ve studied sign language in Brazil because I wanted to specialize on disability hearing kids and now I am trying to learn sign language here in Canada because I live here.
I love this video about the coffee place because I love coffee, not Starbucks I prefer Peet’s. I think is a great idea what you say in your video about Starbucks having a place for people that signs I wish they have one closer to me here lol.. Thank you for this video I love it..
I actually work at a Peet’s Coffee. I have for the last year and a half. I have one semi-regular deaf costumer and recently had another come in. I want to be able to sign their order back since I took a year of ASL last year. Just to show I do care about their orders just as much as others. Peet’s is such a great community and definitely have the freshest coffee!

thank you for this its very helpful since i work in food service but i was wondering why are there some questions you lower your eyebrows and other questions you raise your eyebrows to? when do you do which?
Good question! Yes-No questions are eyebrows up, while wh-word questions (or any open-ended questions) are typically eyebrows furrowed. See the Y/N question video here: ruclips.net/video/Zo_ArJY502s/видео.html and WH-words here: ruclips.net/video/hnyLmsXkeUw/видео.html and I teach both types of questions and answers in my beginner course! courses.aslmeredith.com
Wow, we're really early into learning and are fascinated by this. I guess it will become second nature with practice but for now. We focus so much on fingerspelling that we forget how to spell words.
Hi thank you so much these videos are helpful. I work as a therapist do you have a video of vocbulary for therapy sessions (behaviors, mental health, coping skills etc.?)
Thanks again for the help! Much easier than having to look them so up and not thinking of all of them! I do have one question. You covered my question on cute/sweet/sugar but even when i look it up, order and answer are the same sign. Are there different facial expressions or context?
Can you do another video like this one but filled with regular questions asked by customers and workers? I think that would also be helpful and thank you for this video. I am learning sign language right now
Hi there! Thanks for this great suggestion. If you have specific questions and answers that would be most useful for this context, please submit them to my request form at aslmeredith.com/request - that's where I go for new video topics and sentences. thank you!!!
Hi Meredith! I love how you sign. Could you explain a bit what the mouth has to do when signing? For example, you always move your jaw downwards slightly when you say "coffee". It's subtle, but you do it every time so I'm wondering if there's any significance to it. Same with "popular" and "Starbucks" you start to say it, but it looks like you're just mouthing the word "pop" and the "s" sounds in Starbucks
Hi Julius! Great question. A few answers to different parts of your question: (1) Regarding the jaw lowering you mentioned when showing some signs - this is a slight head nod that's generally used to indicate an affirmative statement. I naturally do it when teaching a sign, because I'm affirming: "This is the sign". (2) Mouthing the word - Many signers use some English-influenced mouth movements while signing. This is true of both deaf and hearing signers, though I see it much less in people who came from fully Deaf families. It's important to note I'm NOT speaking the words aloud or intentionally mouthing any word in full. What happens is a more subtle partial mouthing, like you said - it's not the whole word, but maybe just the first sound or a portion of the word. No need to try to copy this, but also no need to fully rid yourself of it if you do it naturally, too. (3) All that said, there ARE other mouth movements that are specific to ASL and convey meaningful information. (Linguistically, this makes them "morphemes", if you're curious :) units of language that may not be a "word" themselves, but do coney meaning.) For example, the tongue sticking out could indicate that some action was done in a lazy/careless manner, or could be part of a specific sign (eg: the sign NOT-YET requires the tongue out slightly. Without the tongue, the sign changes to mean LATE). In general, all those ASL non-sign parts of the language are called "Non-manual signals" (NMS) and any ASL course you take should certainly include this instruction. I explain the NMS / mouth morpheme concept in more detail and with more examples and a video demo in my beginner FAQs -- #7, which you can download for free: www.aslmeredith.com/faq.html. Hope this helps!
Hi Marianna, thank you for this great suggestion! If you have a list of SPECIFIC vocabulary words and phrases that would be most useful in the shop, please submit them to my request form: aslmeredith.com/request Thank you!
Hi Meredith I'm new to your channel, so are you fully deaf and if so who speaks for you in the video or are you not deaf you just know sign? Great video's, I've definitely subscribed!❤
Hi ASLMeredith! I was wondering if you could make some signs related to working at chipotle. I know youve done restaurant signs! but anything related to chipotle or other mexican/hispanic related food places :)
Oops! I think I’ve been using the “sell” sign wrong. I thought that singular “store” movement meant to shop, (the verb). Can that sign be used to mean both sell and to shop? If not, what is the proper sign for shop (verb)?
Great question! Right - STORE (or "shop" the noun) has a duplicate movement, SELL is like STORE but with a singular movement. SHOP as a verb is a different sign altogether. It's like the sign BUY, duplicated. See MONEY, BUY, and SHOP/SHOPPING in this video: ruclips.net/video/2ex65HcTLkU/видео.html (there aren't any captions but the signs are shown in that exact order)
Do you have a video that shows you have to sign "can I have..." or "I would like..." I am learning ASL because I would like to be able to communicate to the deaf community or anyone who uses ASL.
Hi there, good question! To express what you'd like (at say, a restaurant), you can sign "I WANT..." and then the item. To learn "WANT", see this video: ruclips.net/video/5NHgcT-kGqo/видео.html
Very well done A+ teacher!! One of your best videos in my opinion. Superb on sign clarity, repetition, and explanation of context and varables. This is why I follow you. I have faith in your teaching ability and skill. Thank you.
Same sign! Use context to know the difference, and also if "order" like "command", then non-manual signals (facial expression) will also help discern the two.

Agree !! I explain a bit about mouth morphemes with a video demo in my free FAQ doc. Get it at aslmeredith.com/faq -- Hope that helps!
This is so helpful!! Thank you!! I recently injured my self and I knew some sign when I was younger but this is a great! It makes it easy to communicate so I dont have to hurt myself everything I try to speak 😍😍😍😘😘👌🏻👌🏻👌🏻👌🏻
Glad you find this useful to review your signs!
I work in a kitchen at a brewery. I could use sign to help customers there, like beer seltzer, wine, tap, ice, then like ingredients. Like no lettuce or add tomato and stuff like that.
Thank you soooooo much for all you do to teach me how to sign.
It is a blessing for those people that are learning to sign.
Thanks for the kind comment! So glad you find these useful for learning :)
hey! could you do a video of the best ways to get used to ASL syntax instead of, like.. signing as you would in English sentence structure? ie: sign I learn, instead of accidentally getting into the habit of "I learn sign language"?
I'd super appreciate that! thank you!
Hi Maria, thanks for asking! I cover grammar (ASL syntax) in my online beginner course! More info at courses.aslmeredith.com :)
Your video's have helped me so much as I learn ASL. Thank you Meredith. I thank you Greg Olfin.
This makes me so happy! I'm glad you find these videos helpful for learning :)
I am a hard hearing and for me has been awesome to learn from you ASL. I already know Brazil’s sign language and there’s a lot of sign that are the same.
Hi Julia, thanks for sharing! It's great that you're learning ASL, too - and that there's some overlap with Brazil's sign langauge!
I live in Canada now and I am a hard hearing, this is the why I’d like to learn sign language 🤟!
@@juliashibata8764 Awesome!
@@juliashibata8764 Ohh wow such interesting background!
Thank you, I work at a Dunkin Donuts and this actually helped me get a customers order
YAY i'm so glad you're learning to better communicate with customers! Keep up the good work! :)
Thank you very much,..I always learn ASL on RUclips from you and I'm deaf from Indonesian. Nice to know you :)
Hi, thank you for sharing! :)
Thank Meredith, I've learned a lot of signs from you. I, can now communicate with a deaf people a little. -Sam Lacuarta
That's wonderful! Great work! So glad you're learning.
This was awesome! You’re so great at teaching!
Thank you, Chelsea! I'm so glad you find these videos helpful for learning :)
Thank You for this. I would like to see a video covering the "some" words.....somewhere/ somehow, etc.
I'm knew to your channel but want to learn! :-) Thank you for your videos and I hope you continue to put out content. I'm a middle school teacher and have a plethora of students that have different needs. Learning to sign is just another way I can try to communicate with them!! Thank you so much!! By the way, I love the way you teach!! Happy Thanksgiving!!
Hi Jason ! Sorry for my delayed replies (I've been a little more "out of office" than usual over the holidays), but thank you SO so much for being here and learning ASL with me! "I'm so glad you find these videos useful and hope you're able to use your new skills to improve communication with your students. Keep up the great work!
@@ASLMeredith are you kidding??!! No worries at all, I appreciate the responses and will do my best to help hold you accountable this year. (saw the vid) 😁 Life gets busy and things come up. Again, thank you!!

As always, fantastic work, what would we do with out you. I would have never have guessed the sign for trash. That was a very good learn.
thanks! Glad you enjoyed this tutorial :)
thanks your videos are always helpful.
Thank you! I'm so glad you find these useful :)
These videos help so much...I'm going back to school this year and I want to know some signs i can use in school...love your vids
Awesome! Thanks, Hannah - I do have a whole school playlist you can check out if you haven't already: ruclips.net/video/c49qWjgFtRI/видео.html
thank you for this its very helpful since i work in food service but i was wondering why are there some questions you lower your eyebrows and other questions you raise your eyebrows to? when do you do which?
Good question! Yes-No questions are eyebrows up, while wh-word questions (or any open-ended questions) are typically eyebrows furrowed. See the Y/N question video here: ruclips.net/video/Zo_ArJY502s/видео.html and WH-words here: ruclips.net/video/hnyLmsXkeUw/видео.html and I teach both types of questions and answers in my beginner course! courses.aslmeredith.com
@@ASLMeredith awesome! thank you!
Wow, we're really early into learning and are fascinated by this. I guess it will become second nature with practice but for now. We focus so much on fingerspelling that we forget how to spell words.
Fantastic!! I'm so glad you're enjoying the process of learning ASL. Keep up the good work!
Hi thank you so much these videos are helpful. I work as a therapist do you have a video of vocbulary for therapy sessions (behaviors, mental health, coping skills etc.?)
Meridith we can't be friends because you don't drink Coffee! 🤯☕ just kidding I love your videos! They have taught me so very much!🤣🤣🤣
Hahah yep sorry! I'll get tea though ;)
I know I asked you once before about teaching signing to babies Please make a basic video of this? Mahalo (thanks) from Honolulu Hawaii.
Hi Charlette, I may have something coming on baby signs in 2020 ! Stay tuned!
Thank you so much!! You're an inspiration
Glad you find this useful! Keep learning
Thank you very much, Meredith 💖 I learmed a lot. 🙌
thank YOU!
I binge watched all your videos 😂😂❤❤ only a month in and I can carry a conversation pretty well!
Glad you like them and are learning! Keep at it! :D
Thanks again for the help! Much easier than having to look them so up and not thinking of all of them! I do have one question. You covered my question on cute/sweet/sugar but even when i look it up, order and answer are the same sign. Are there different facial expressions or context?
Nope, same sign! It's also used for COMMAND , which might use a more stern facial expression
Thanks for your help
Thank YOU! 🙌
Getting better videos well explained!👍🏻
Thanks so much!
Oh my goodness Meredith you are terrific! How do I get more videos from you.
Subscribe would be one way silly.
2022 and im learning with you!!! thank you!!!

Thank YOU! Glad you find these videos useful.
Is there a difference between the signs for "tea" and "vote"?
Meredith can you show about Deli Sandwiches, type of bread, White , Wheat Multi Grain, Thank You, these video do help a lot..
Could you do an icecream shop? I work at Coldstone and I would love to be able to sign with customers that come in
Hi Marianna, thank you for this great suggestion!
Hi Emily, thanks for your question! I am hearing and have been signing since childhood. More on my background with ASL is in my channel's "About" tab.
@@ASLMeredith thank you so much.
So informative, thank you for your video
Glad it was helpful!
Hi ASLMeredith! I was wondering if you could make some signs related to working at chipotle. I know youve done restaurant signs! but anything related to chipotle or other mexican/hispanic related food places :)
thanks, You are a great teacher
Thanks, Danny!
I may have missed it. I will comment it anyway; how do you say, "without cream" or "no cream"?
aww, man... I wish I still lived in Washington...
Do you have a video that shows you have to sign "can I have..." or "I would like..."
I am learning ASL because I would like to be able to communicate to the deaf community or anyone who uses ASL.
Hi there, good question! To express what you'd like (at say, a restaurant), you can sign "I WANT..." and then the item. To learn "WANT", see this video: ruclips.net/video/5NHgcT-kGqo/видео.html
I learned that if you shake your head when doing some signs it negates the meaning. Does this not happen with WRONG?
hi, big Meredith your sign asl register different sign i dont remember that is register, , well have a nice good weekend, cheers meredith bye Orestes
very useful😀
Thanks, Joe!

You have to make subtitles and please kindly fix your audio i almost can't hear what your saying thank you 👍
Hi, thanks for your feedback! This video does have English subtitles. Click the CC (closed caption) button to see them. Hope that helps!
Gracias!!!!
What is the difference between order and answer?
Same sign! Use context to know the difference, and also if "order" like "command", then non-manual signals (facial expression) will also help discern the two.
Is there an extra large sign? :0
Small , mid most coffee also Diet Coke never large cup
I need help learning medical questions
