I remember the first time I heard this back in 2000. "The Man Who" was one of my first ever albums that I really invested myself in. One day I accidently kept the CD running on the final track, "Slide Show", thinking it had finished; then this started playing. It's like they got tired of playing folk and played some Nirvana to shake things up a little. Wish they'd done that a little more. Doesn't matter, they went on to do some of their best work after anyway.
Heard this song for the first time when I bought this album in 1999.... and it is the only song from Travis I continue to listen and I even learn it on guitar.... amazing song!!!
I'm a young teenager in 2020, and I absolutely love Travis. I was sort of raised hearing it around the house but never decided to discover them until this year. It sucks because none of the people my age have the same taste for music like I do. I love The Beatles, Queen, Travis, Weezer, etc,.
@@shilo.R.A Depends where you live, I think. I'm in Northern Canada where no one really even knows about alot of artists from outside of Canada or America. Plus everyone I know listens to rap
+Natalie Williamson I remember when this album got released, and I stuck it on when I got home from a mates, I was shattered, I was falling asleep when I thought that the album had finished.. And then this came on, yes it made me jump out of my socks :P but what a great tune :)
+Natalie Williamson I had this album on tape when it came out. Was at a mates chatting shit then this comes on! I then bought the CD!! Now its the future and the CD is just gathering dust while the interwebs has my back... Fuck I'm old.

I found this on the album as a teen, and still come back to it if I'm down or in a crappy mood. Blasted it out tonight singing my wee heart out driving home from work today. I want this and good day to die played at my funeral.
I've heard this song countless times and never thought until today the *only* good thing about an abusive drunk is the alcohol gives you a bit of a warning. If someone is abusive without alcohol you get no warning at all... that's a weird thing to be thankful for.
Saturday evening Saturday evening at a quarter to five I would see him arrive at the door Pushed you aside as he staggered inside Spilling alcohol over the floor A storm is abrewin' and it's sure to fall soon As I look at you from the shore So You better hold on 'Cause it's Saturday night And your friends are all out And you feel like shit 'Cause they never call you No they never call you No they never call Never call Never bloody ever Call me a name and I'll hit you again You're a slut, you're a bitch, you're a whore Talked to your daddy in that tone of voice There's a belt hanging over the door So you run to your room And you hide in your room Thinking how you could settle the score But Saturday night at a quarter to six And your friends are all out And you're live in the sticks Still they never call you No they never call you No they never call Never call Never bloody ever call Blue flashing light last Saturday night Brought the neighbours all out on the street They watched as the firemen carried you out And they stared at each other's feet Now everyone sees and yet nobody says How we're all just afraid of the heat But It's Saturday night And I'm lying alone in the bed that I made Disconnected the phone Still they never call you No they never call you No they never call Never call Never bloody ever call Never bloody ever Never Never do Never do
Always baffles me that this band didn't do more angry songs, they're bloody good at it. So much fluff and then they produce THIS! More!! More! .. .nope, just more fluff.
I used to listen to this song all the time blase when it came out coz I liked it..I didn’t realise I would come to understand this song intimately in my 20/30s..shit relationships&alcohol..
Doesn’t matter where you live, domestic abuse is prevalent in every society the world over. It’s got fuck all to do with Scotland. It’s just a song. Incidentally I’m Scottish but live in Hong Kong. I had to escape that terrible country of mine otherwise the domestic abuse would have killed me, NOT! I was in Spain one year and there was an almighty commotion the floor underneath me at 2am. A woman screaming. I called the police. Next day the English woman who presumably got battered by her husband was at dinner with a black eye and bruises. It’s not country specific so don’t talk shite you apparently know nothing about.

really underrated song i think... the rhythm, the melody, everything's such perfect
I agree.
The secret track was the best of them all
The best song I have ever heard about alcoholism and domestic violence. It has a raw power to it. Travis you are fantastic.
Takes me back!!
Such a beautifully crafted record. Best secret track ever

If Travis wrote more songs like this I reckon they'd idolised today, classic!

Their most real song amongst some real proper lyrical masterpieces.
by far the best song in the album. few people know this song. makes me feel special whenever i listen to it.
Best song on the album and they hid it!?

Saturday evening
Saturday evening at a quarter to five
I would see him arrive at the door
Pushed you aside as he staggered inside
Spilling alcohol over the floor
A storm is abrewin' and it's sure to fall soon
As I look at you from the shore
So
You better hold on
'Cause it's Saturday night
And your friends are all out
And you feel like shit
'Cause they never call you
No they never call you
No they never call
Never call
Never bloody ever
Call me a name and I'll hit you again
You're a slut, you're a bitch, you're a whore
Talked to your daddy in that tone of voice
There's a belt hanging over the door
So you run to your room
And you hide in your room
Thinking how you could settle the score
But
Saturday night at a quarter to six
And your friends are all out
And you're live in the sticks
Still they never call you
No they never call you
No they never call
Never call
Never bloody ever call
Blue flashing light last Saturday night
Brought the neighbours all out on the street
They watched as the firemen carried you out
And they stared at each other's feet
Now everyone sees and yet nobody says
How we're all just afraid of the heat
But
It's Saturday night
And I'm lying alone in the bed that I made
Disconnected the phone
Still they never call you
No they never call you
No they never call
Never call
Never bloody ever call
Never bloody ever
Never
Never do
Never do
i hadn't heard this till i fell asleep while listening to slide show. amazing song

Do any of you actually live in Scotland? It's the song of a generation. The song about domestic abuse, that nobody wants to talk about.
Glaswegian born 1994. this shit never got fixed till around 2003 with police slamming harder on domestic's.
It's Saturday morning an I'm planning a domestic already.
