Probably more content sensationalism than truth. I work with methanol in the lab all the time. I can’t see how you could mistakenly take it or fail to immediately notice if your drink has been spiked with it. There is no alcohol allowed down there, and between the boredom and isolation, depression can be a problem for some folks. As can the ability to rationalize a bad idea… He may have thought he was taking a small enough dose to just enjoy a weak adult beverage. May have even been doing it a a few times without any severe trouble, yet. Some moonshine have had high levels of methanol but folks could initially consume it without dying or requiring hospitalization, until suddenly they do. The harmful chemicals produced from metabolizing methanol, like formaldehyde and formic acid can bite you hard and fast when they hit that very narrow tipping point from very small amounts per volume.
@williamstearns7490 Funnily enough, the treatment for methanol poisoning is ethanol. It outcompetes methanol for the enzymes that break it down, so the kidneys just excrete the methanol without metabolizing it to formaldehyde and formic acid. Pretty neat, you get drunk and get better.

My aunt passed last year at 87 years old. Her husband of 45 years, who died about 2000 was married to the son of a man who was crucial in Operation Highjump. He relayed the radio signal from coming from Antarctica to Washington D.C. from his garage. He lived in Cairo, Ga just over the state line from Florida. He had one of the most powerful civilian owned radios in the world at the time and was contacted by Byrd's engineers to help in the effort. He was killed about 6 months after Operation Highjump by a tree that broke and fell into the cab of a bulldozer he was operating.

If true this illustrates the true nature of the disease of alcoholism. I have heard anecdotes about people drinking various forms of alcohol when their ethanol supply ran dry. Aftershave, sanitizer, other solvents. Luckily I myself had a stroke in 2017 due to mixing drugs, and I was in a coma for a month and ended up with anoxic brain damage. That was May 29th 2017 and I have not used illicit drugs to get high since that date. Anyhow, this theory seems very plausible to me. The intentional poisoning theory seems very implausible. Distilling ethanol isn’t difficult, you just have to discard the fore shot, maybe the first 100mL or so. Even then, if the ethanol concentration is high enough, it’ll prevent most methanol toxicity which is only due to the formaldehyde and formic acid it metabolizes into. The treatment for methanol poisoning is ethanol, so you can get medically drunk which is neat. There was an extremely brief mention at about 12:07 as a bs theory for the gravitational anomaly. What if the world has flipped in the past and erased past human progress?
@Imprezed perhaps but under the ice is a mountain range it had to had come from somewhere...
@Imprezed I would suspect the ice is locking in a secret that may have changes for humanity, we can only wonder...
@Imprezed I suspect that is what they fear the most, we are a stitch in time. Some will ask why and will never understand the answer but the 3th rain is coming...
@Imprezed Let me share something I saw on a program I found profound, the program spoke on geological lines in rock, they stated this time we have come to understand will one day become a line in stone and most likely will not leave any information on the last 100,000 years of our existence, and too think we are calling ourselves masters of the Universe...lol...nope but global warming will have a final say on which direction this creation will be forced to take, either a water world or an ice ball either way it's been a wonderfull life......
Personally, I enjoyed this episode.
