This is a great video. You're right about the other videos. It's also usually young, built people doing it with no bush around to snag on half way. I'm 58 years old with a 40kg boat and often at some remote, uncleared trail up a riverbank, after some hard travel already. I will often tie a crosspiece between two trees at about chest height then lift the bow of the canoe up onto it, Then I can crouch under the yoke and just stand up. I do need a lighter boat though.
Thanks for posting.. I am looking at acquiring a 60lb canoe and was wondering how to get it on my SUV by myself safely. This helped. Also subbed. Cheers!
I completely agree and would only chime in "keep your chin UP" as it is impossible to bend the back if he chin is up, that forces the person to use their legs for the initial pick-up. Like you say, better still, get some help. Another way is to back the vehicle up close to the upturned canoe. Pick up the front and slide it onto the racks, then go to the back, pick up the back and SLIDE it on, in this way you never lift the entire canoe at all.
Pretty much, the best, useful vid, I've seen on this subject,,,,99 per cent of the time,,,I use just brute force,,,but this is well done,,,,great vid ,,,thanks!!!😎
it's very helpful. most video show people doing the weight lifting like the olympics. whichs is very hard to do and can easily break a back. I try today to see if I can do it.
great vid .... straight to the point. I have beast of them all...... OLD Town Ojibway.. ... now shes heavy.. but such a wonderful Canoe for fishing etc.. plus almost impossible to capsize.. getting my Hue canoe in march .. i 🤗👍🤗🙏🤗👌🤗🤟🤗✌🤗🛶🤗🌄🤗💓
Thanks....This is how I've been doing it but I still struggle when at the back as the canoe twists side to side easy, if you don't get the balance exact. I ned to find soft ground to practice on!
yah ... that will do it... that technique and a very soft blanket on the car roof ( in my case i use those sponge car tops ) to land and push /position the canoe is just what i need .... thx m8t - after the canoe is settle i lift canoe and remove blanket ( put it away for next time )....
For heavy canoes do the same action but farther towards one end while resting the opposite end on the ground ,then walk it onto your shoulders. This way you never have lift the whole canoe while getting it on your shoulders. This is the method muskokan elder canoeists do it.
This is exactly the technique I have been using for over a decade now. So easy on the body.

Thank you for posting this video. I have a heavy PE canoe and at times it can be a challenge handling it by one's self.

Thanks for the tips. I just acquired a monster of a canoe (Old Town Bass Pro Poly 42" wide at center) It's a beast. This will help me for sure!
I’m in the same boat.
Thank you! Just bought a bit of a heavier one for my young kids and I and had no idea how I was going to do it myself!! You’re amazing
Great video. To the point and no-nonsense. Thanks, I'm going to practice this.
Thanks, it's good to hear it's been some help.
John W it definitely saved my back
This is very informative since I have a heavy canoe as well! Thanks for the posting.
I always try to place the opposite end on grass or soft soil to prevent scuffing up the end too much.

This is very helpful to me! Thanks a lot and kind regards from Germany!

Glad it's helpful. Hopefully what I've learned from all my back injuries might prevent others from suffering.

Thank you so much. I just bought a heavy coleman canoe that I needed some advice with.
Get a lighter boat
Sorry
@@donzero4944 I'll just get stronger.

Did you figure it out? Soft ground and still flips over
@@tangolima_ nope i only use the canoe now if i can get someone to help. Nearly dropped it too many times. And not prepared to wreck my back.
I'm going to have to try this! I have a 16' fiberglass canoe and an injured back.

Excellent advice!
That's a good way of doing it. Very easy.
Great information. Thanks 🇨🇦👍
Brilliant! Thanks for posting!
Mine just keeps flipping over

i enjoyed the narration thank you
Your a champ, great video
Thanks 👍
V useful for a beginner like me - thank you!
You already had the entire canoe at rack height and then set one end on the ground?
Thanks! 😁
Thanks for a great tip for those of us who aren't "Hercules" and are concerned about our backs.

Yes I use this method
Very good.
Thanks!
So… Mine doesn’t have a yoke, just a middle bench. How to go about things then? It’s 40 kilo so I can barely lift it.
Thanks!
Man,wish I saw this last week. Had my canoe crunch my neck. Not a good time
Sorry to hear it, hope you're all healed up now.
Way easier than the back breaking method
i have noticed all the "canoe life" vid are of "heavy" 50lbs canoes( LOL! thats a lite boat!) try that shit on a Old Town Tripper
my ply 16footer weighs 50 Kg's i can just lift it off the ground
first get a belt
Lol! I am actually wearing a belt, the problem is the ever expanding gut that pushes the belt lower and lower each day!
@@johnw1850 Getting thicker around the waist is a thing... but getting thicker in the brain is much worse. 😉
Great video!
Thank you!
