I was there in the audience and have carried the memory in my mind for all these years of how Caballé joined in the applause for Pavarotti after "Che gelida." How wonderful to actually see it again!! (Not to mention the hearing!!!)
This had to be the one-night gala in March, 1976 at the MET in New York. I flew in and stood for the whole opera with the flu. It is etched into my memory forever. They were both so exquisite I cried buckets of tears.
I cried during and after this performance... I never heard and FELT anything like that in all the future performances I attended.....The sound simply engulfed me like a warm blanket... AMAZING! Long for voices like this again.
Thank you, thank you, THANK YOU for sharing this. The pic was blurred, the two extraordinary singers were overweight (Mimi was certainly not looking like a consumptive!) but the singing transcended all of this - and you recorded this for us to watch while our world falls apart with this Covid 19. Great art like this holds us in one piece against the chaos. Bet you never thought your video would have such a powerful effect! Thank you again!
Formidable! With what respect and admiration these two singing Geniuses listen to each other. And it is to be impressed with that powerful clean long "C"... Caballe's pianisimos do not cover Pavarotti's voice (in the high notes the female voice dominates the male voice), on the contrary they formed an absolutely organic duet. It is unrepeatable like concerts by Paganini or Chopin. We only have that very poor quality video, the gift of the generosity and daring of that viewer who was lucky to be present the birth of a Masterpiece!
Amazing to see this video! I was there. In my last year of law school at Columbia ... a friend snared tickets. This was a one-time special performance pairing Caballe and Pavarotti. It was astounding from beginning to end. The applause was unending. My friend and I left after 30 minutes of applause at the end, and people were still screaming and shouting. I will never forget Caballe breaking character to applaud Pavarotti's unbelievable singing of Che Gelida Manina. One of my cherished opera memories.
I am very envious of you, but hope to get to The Met once this virus has subsided. I won’t be able to see these two operatic giants but I want to catch Mr David Hallberg’s farewell performances with ABT before he leaves for Australia.
Gracias. De Lima Perú.
one of the most beautiful arias ever written, and for mine one of the hardest to sing beautifully incredible simply incredible, thank you kindly for sharing
The greatest the only 🌟
What a find on a Saturday afternoon-- I sighed--- I cried---I remembered times of hearing each in the theater and the sounds that inspired and still resonate in my heart. God-- there must be SUCH music in heaven!
I just discivered this-how wonderful. We were there close to the front row. A never to be forgotten performance. Just saw the most recent La Boheme in Live from the Met in HD. It was good but I don't think any performance will match the 1976 one. This video made my heart soar. Thank you!!!
How ecstatic this moment...how sad I have missed Caballe over and over...Although, my toddler daughter sat on his lap with visit to his dressing room with her daddy, another tenor. Pavarotti tremendous talent. Caballe and Pavarotti together is vocally unimaginable to me to be in audience. I don't think I would be able to sit still.
Who cares about the little glitch in Pavarotti's top note. This is music sung straight from the heart, the way it is supposed to be performed. Both Caballé and Pavarotti are 'in the moment'. I love it.
My dear Uncle Louie, thanks a lot!
I too was there and am so glad to hear from the many others who remember the performance as I do. Well of course. No one there could ever forget it. More a concert version, really, and when Caballé applauded along with the audience, the enthusiasm of the crowd around us grew even louder. The performance was first announced as La Bohème, TBA. Once the leads were named, the rush to get tickets was explosive. It was as if the Met delved into the secret casting dreams of its devoted audiences.
It was like Caballe brought her ‘A’ game after seeing Pav slaying Che Gilda Manina! I’d better give those $&@“ing pianissimos to show that I am worthy of this stage 😂 Mdme. Caballe you will always be remembered as a great soprano ❤️❤️❤️

She had been through a cesarean delivery in 72 then an abdominal surgery 74? for a questionable growth...she was such a gracious woman, no knew too much of constant medical challenges...76/77 her husband had a heart attack...her musical vocal gifts were always a path way to her heart.
Voces irrepetibles, sublimes.
That lady really liked what she heard and was saying it out loud. What's wrong with that? Was she distracting to the performers and the performance? No. These two performers had he ability to stir up something in people. I'd rather be sitting in a rowdy crowd who likes what they hear than one that sits and politely claps.
No. The tewnty stone divas were always there and always will be should their voices and skils worth it. In the _bel canto_ era, when heroines had to be credible because opera was just opera, singing theater, enterteinment, not elitist “high culture", they were almost all pretty women like today (Colbrán, Pasta, Malibran, Sontag, Grisi, Cinti, Dorus, Meric, Tacchinardi, Patton... ) BUT then there were Pisaroni (ugly), Ronzi (fat) or Alboni (extremely fat, even fattier than Caballé).

You know what’s so wonderful about this ? I took my late mother to this performance and it’s so heartwarming to see it again.
Thanks cool...thanks for sharing
Pavarotti is magnificent and you get the Caballe magic. I saw them do it at the Met. Scotto was the Musetta! What a night to remember!

You are CORRECT. It WAS the One Night Gala and my FIRST attempt at Video-taping at the Met. That's why the camera shakes.
uncle louie bless your beautiful soul, sir! We would not have witnessed such beauty if you didn’t record and post on RUclips ❤️
Peter H Lucky you Good for you 👍🏻
uncle louie I wonder if you got anything of the Price-McCracken-Horne Aida in that year?
@@unclelouie3828 Thank you so much for this. Thank you Grazie 🌺
Both at the peak of their powers. And dear God! Caballe - was there ever more perfect Mimi. My tears say not.
What an enormously beautiful experience! Pavarotti at its best and my beloved Caballé! Thank you for recording this precious moment ❤

This was my "first" video recording. Surprised I could hold the camera that steady. In '76, it was a "monster" camera.
Great work! Thumbs up!
I was there too. One of the greatest performances I ever heard.
Somebody’s head is in the way, but thanks for trying
Excellent sound quality!

Gorgeous. Hands down the greatest by far of his generation and one of the giants of the last century.
Boy he was on here! Simply beautiful. One of his fantastic roles. And Caballe just astounds.
This was beyond perfection.

Wow. I'm sure I heard this performance or one with the same cast. Those were the days, my friend, we thought they'd never end. Pavarotti at his best.

What a thrill. Thanks for posting this beautiful video. I think it's charming that Mme. Caballe can be seen applauding after the "Che gelida manina."

And he kept it in the original key, making the top note a high C.
I am speechless
Dos monstruos de la opera juntos. Sublime, único.
This alone makes RUclips worthy of my eternal gratitude.
RIP Montserrat. Just saw opening night, Boheme at the Lyric last night, 10/6/18.
Emozione fortissima,voci uniche e sublimi!!!!!
This also prove how powerful and better he was (IS) than all great tenors.
This is the best opera clip I've listened to on RUclips. Thank you

didn't even notice it,
It's a little pushed but still...that voice in his prime is like no other. The legato is textbook bel canto. Stunning.

Grandissimo Pavarotti ,manchi tanto ❤
Truly beautiful voice & stunning precision. If Gabriel sang he would be blessed with that.

LUCIANO'S VOICE SO POWERFUL;; EVEN ONE AS SKILLED AS CABALLE had to sit/stand DOWN STAGE so she could continue her part.. This was @ MET NYC 1976

Pav was the greatest Rodolfo ever in my book, even better than Bjoerling. Thanks for posting this.
I agree! That warm, lustrous lyric sound is exactly what Rodolfo should sound like to my mind!
I prefer Di Stefano, personally.
@@absdyna Leggero, Pavarotti was a leggero tenor, not a lyric.
@@xxsaruman82xx87 Lirico-leggero, so lighter lyric.
@Zubair Hossain I think he was a true leggero, his voice was no bigger than Carreras or Vallett’s

Caballé being Caballé, humble and generous. Pavarotti being Pavarotti. What a duo.

The days of 20 stone Divas is all over. You have to look gorgeous as well. It finished when Montserrat Caballé died in 2018 GRHS.
No. The tewnty stone divas were always there and always will be should their voices and skils worth it.
