    I never noticed this before but: throughout the game duels are a central component of plot progression. Many of John's enemies insist upon it. And yet, Dutch doesn't even attempt it. When the feds come for John, his final act is to try and quick-draw an army that has long-since abandoned this practice and executes him without honor or remorse.
    It's a great and subtle way the "death of the west" was woven into the story AND gameplay.

      I always liked it too. Especially when Marston claims he's "here to capture or kill Bill Williamson" and the Marshall just sort of laughs and says "ok".
      The marshall is an experienced, hard man, and while Marston may be a total badass, the marshall could teach him a thing or two about how to deal with lowlife scumbags on a daily basis. I like how he is completely cool when Marston is holding a gun to Jonah, and how jonah fully respects the Marshall, despite thinking Marston is a Williamson gang-member.

    Always liked Javier, even in RDR1. I know many people dislike the Guarma chapter and felt it was a bit disjointed from the rest of the story. However, from a narrative standpoint, it's the pivot that ties the whole story together. It's understated how much it impacted the dynamic of for the rest of the story. It's where Arthur truly begins to lose Faith in Dutch and where he first begins to show bouts of illness. It's also where I think Javier's loyalty to Dutch (and even Bill's to a lesser degree) are cemented. Nothing was the same afterwards.
    Dutch had done right by Javier on Guarma (coming back for him, and ensuring his rescue), and because of that Javier was in his debt. Javier was smart. And like Arthur, he was probably aware to some extent that Dutch was losing it towards the end of the gang's run. However, he couldn't bring himself to turn against Dutch, not so soon.
    I like to think that had he not been captured on Guarma, Javier would have sided with Arthur & John when the gang broke up. I felt like that of everyone who sided with Dutch in the end, Javier was the only person who would have done differently at the end if just 1 or 2 things in the story had gone differently in the middle.

      Here’s what I think the story was meant to be like:
      John was Dutch’s second in command while Bill and Javier were enforcers. However, once John and Dutch began falling out, Javier steps in after John gets demoted. Dutch starts losing his sanity and it leaves a bad effect on Javier. Dutch and Javier start killing people without giving their decisions much thought and it eventually leads to Bill falling apart as well. The gang begins to suspect John is a traitor since he no longer believes in Dutch’s vision, so they leave him to die in a failed ferry robbery in 1906. The gang would split off when the robbery goes sour, Dutch disappears in a fire, and Javier and Bill go their separate ways, and John, Uncle, and his family leave the gang.
      Two years later, John earns enough money working in a brothel with Uncle and Abigail to buy a farm at Beecher’s Hope, he hires Uncle as a ranch hand, and Jack as well as his soon to be deceased sister move in.

      Well Javier was with Dutch and Micah when they “went back” for John so it’s not entirely inaccurate. Javier did leave John behind along with Dutch. I think Javier really loved Arthur, but was indifferent toward John. But I agree that line doesn’t make sense after playing the second game. Javier and Bill didn’t really do anything crazy other than side with Dutch when the gang broke up. Micah was Dutch’s downfall. Of course Micah wasn’t even thought of in the first game. When you have a prequel there’s always going to be little things that don’t add up. Just one of those things you have to live with.

Rdr2 didn’t have that special variety and anyone who’s played rdr 1 ALOT knows rdr2 was missing the feeling/heart of Rdr 1. Despite how technically flawless rdr2 is, I always felt like it missed the mark. Although I know this is not a feeling held by many

    • @jinxthatsme2317
      @jinxthatsme2317 2 года назад +42

      That’s what I loved about RDR1. It had the exterior of a romantic western, but deep at its core, it was very much the opposite.
      John isn’t just some western archetypal protagonist, he’s got skeletons in his closet. And his redemption was much less on the nose and subtle. In the beginning of the game, he very much clings to the ideals of his former mentor Dutch and even attempts to justify his actions by claiming his gang were noble outlaws with a good cause. And although that’s partly true, we learn later in the game, from John’s conversation with Javier, that their code turned out to be an excuse for them to rob and kill.
      "You know that life we lived is over. And when we was livin' it-it didn’t mean nothin' anyways. It was just an excuse and we all knew."
      Even John’s politics change after his time in Mexico. He starts out the game with the belief that government and laws shouldn’t be enforced within America, believing that man should be free. However, after seeing firsthand the anarchy, hypocrisy, bloodshed, and violence incited by both Allende and Reyes, John realizes just how much laws and government are needed. He sees the parallels between Reyes and Dutch. Two great men that turned out to be nothing but frauds.
      The story doesn’t offer any clear moral stance and instead shows the player that no one is perfect. Everyone is corrupt in their own ways and are prone to act in their own self interests. It’s one of the most unromantic and brutally honest depictions I’ve seen of the American west since The Wild Bunch. And yet, it still maintains that goofy and satirical atmosphere that you talked about.
      RDR2 definitely dropped the ball when it came to this. Rather than continuing the themes the first game set up with its blurred and muddled sense of morality, it decided to go the Hollywood route and tell a much more safe and clear cut redemption story with the typical message of revenge being bad. It’s so safe and uninspired that I can’t believe it was written by the same people.

      @Xorldz 2 года назад +15

      I feel like rdr1 captures a story of a badass gunslinger who ends up dying an honorable western death, quick drawing against the many of the army, saving his family. Then the redemption ark of Jack coming back to kill Edgar Ross.
      Rdr2 captures more of Dutch’s gang and the story of an outlaw and a bandit who midway through the story catches a disease, he develops different traits from being a egotistical cowboy to feeling regret, guilt, and then eventually decides that in his last few acts he has left he’s going to dedicate it to helping John get his family out.
      Then of course with John coming back to kill Micah for his redemption ark.
      Both games connect very neatly,
      both of these characters are legendary, and both died in great acts of love which I think is the beauty of these two games.

      Agreed. I love RDR 2 don't get me wrong, it has a great world, story and is a marvel in every technical aspect. The story however is very cut and dry with the developments of Arthur, John, Dutch and to a certain extent Javier being the story's saving grace. It lacked the depth, subtleness and realism of RDR 1, it didn't give you the same feeling of dread and brutality that 1 had.

      I just think folks back then weren't very clever with coming up with nicknames, and genuinely thought just calling a person by their ethnicity or ancestors' nationality was enough.
