- Well my dad went to sea gain, there was a good northerly swell on Caister beach, so he drove the tractor to Great Yarmouth, and launched in the lee of the land. He shot 10 2" herring nets, and a seine net for sprats. There wasnt many sprats, as they are now leaving this coast, but they were a good size, the best this year. The herring shoals have now started to thicken up. There was plenty of herring marks on the fish finder and plotter unit, so only one fleet of nets were put over. No point in catching loads of herring for poor money. As my father would say, 'anyone can catch a dollop of herring and get nothing for them'. They soon hauled, and came back to his place to clean the nets.
Lovely job Beany, won't be too long afore you're fishing and ferreting again, you take care mate, all the best, Norfolk Ray
Cheers Ray, yes it’s nice to start feeling a bit better, and walking about ok. Just need to build up some more strength on them stairs etc
nice hall from the old chaps Beany 😂😂😂😂😂
Yeah a nice few
Great video again nice lot of fish tday sprats were a lovely size what a way to be thanked for tea and cake slapped in face with a wet herring jesus if id have done that id have never heard end of it my mrs would have had a face like a slapped arse hahaha
Hahahah my dad didn’t mean it, so mum laughed it off. Yeah, some women would have gone mad.
Can u not catch enough with yr size boats to earn a living now mate or more hobby an earn a few quid quid as u go I know u said there use to be many boats and now only a couple it's a shame how everything been imported an all or own industries going u can even tell round the harbours there don't seem as many boats even when we having a cuppa tea an watching kids play on beach don't see many fishing boats going up n down
@@richardhogan8911 No, as the accountant says its an expensive hobby. This part of the coast was built up on the herring industry. There isnt many species here. It was traditionally herring in the autumn, sprats and cod in winter and spring. A few macks and sea trout in the summer. Now the cod and macks have virtually disappeared, the trout are all eaten by seals, and not many people eat herring anymore, its all sort of gone to the wall
We use to have a static caravan at saltfleet near mabelthorpe I fished the drains all the time full of fish and free fishing sea use to run into a couple of them I use to catch some lovely flatties and sea trout in them were they joined ground rent went up n up till it wasn't cost effective
@@richardhogan8911 Yeah, as they say, good times dont last forever, enjoy them while they are there. Must have been fantastic catching them, not many people get that opportunity
Nice little catch I hope it brought a few pennies in to cover the costs.
Yes, hopefully there wasnt much on there and the prices were ok
Be any I love sprat to but living in Ascot we don't see them well not fresh but love fishing and travel up to Norfolk and love your channel really glad your on the mend I also love herring but again not had in mean year's my mum would clean and then grill them and big slice of bread and butter
Yes, there doesn’t seem to be the numbers of sprats like there was years ago, must be water temp. Nothing better than a plate of fried herring or sprats and a thick bit of crusty bread and butter
Not the way to treat Mother bringing the tea out lucky they weren't wearing it 🤣🤣
Hahahha shes gives as good as she gets hahahhaha
How much on average does a box of herring sell for? Interesting videos by the way. Keep posting.
It all depends on the time of year and demand on the fish market. It can be as little as £20 before dues, to as much as £100. Really is supply and demand
@@beanysfishing2555 That’s a huge fluctuation. It must be a difficult way to make a living if that’s your only source of income. A great job though.
@@anglerfish1001 Its just an expensive hobby for me. There isnt the people that eat herring anymore. They worry about bones and smells when it cooks now
I will get there one day for some bait, running low now
Don’t you worry Bobby Bob nuts! When I’m back to work and fishing,
I will sort you out. With fish obviously, not poking you in the eye! Hahahhah
@@beanysfishing2555 🤣🤣
Call the sprats anchovies and the price will double.
hahaha we get the very odd anchovy, but their guts always burst within an hour or two of being out of the water
What’s a slack box ? And what market do you take them to ? Love the videos ❤
Cheers. A slack box is a box that isnt full, say like 4 stone of fish in a 6 stone box. We take the fish to Lowestoft fish market.
Are sprats just small herring or are they a fish in the own right?
Hello, they are their own separate species. Deeper bodied and different sized eye to herring
@@beanysfishing2555 Cheers for the info.
No probs mate
Do you do longlines through the season?
We used to do a fair bit of lining until the cod vanished around here. I still do the odd trip, only 1 bath normally, just to have a bit of fun really.
@@beanysfishing2555 I'm up north east Scotland . Worked with a lad from caster area he worked a boat . His nickname was Shiloh! Worked with him with (John Martin construction.)Do you know of him and is he still on the go ??
@@beanysfishing2555 why do you think the cod have vanished? Overfishing or water temperatures getting higher?
It’s a small world. I know the family well, even go drinking with the younger brother a fair bit.
Definitely water temps. We were told by a scientist in 1995 that cod were finished here. He said the cold water plankton that the cod fry need for their first 2 weeks of life were moving 10 mile north a year to colder water. He said without them, the breeding cycle just stops
