Honest Reviews of Portraits By Pro Food Photographer

- Опубликовано: 11 окт 2020
- As a food photographer I have a slightly different perspective to portrait photography than some other folks may do. I also come from a background of being (a not very good) portrait photographer.
In this video I give an honest review of the work that was submitted to me by portrait photographers around the world.\
Here is my advice to those who are looking to quit their day job to become a professional photographerMy NEW WEBSITE is ready ! www.tinhouse-studio.com

DISCLAIMER: In this video I give my exact and completely honest opinions on your work. Please note that this is just my opinion and in no way a fact. Others may feel completely differently about the work. This is also from the perspective of a commercial food photographer. I hope this is all taken in the way that it was intended.
It was cool to be a part of this. Some of the ones you didn't like were actually shortlisted for some pretty fancy schmancy national level prizes so really cool to see what different people read into things. Thanks mate.
Wow... this gives me confidence actually. I wouldn't have the nerve to submit half of those images.
Some people seem overly impressed by their own ability to simply make a camera work. I mean FOCUS people, FOCUS!!!!! It's about the eyes.
Thanks for your comments. The photo of the poet is going on the cover of a forthcoming book, the hospital shot was used in an online fund raising campaign, and the singer/guitarist shot was used on the cover of a personal video project that has subsequently led to paid video work. All the shots were part of a year-long course in commercial photography. Yes, I've got a long ways to go and have since decided to specialize in a totally different area -- handmade artisan products. Cheers!
Yay, nice and honest feedback, probably considered harsh by RUclips standards, but I love it; you can't grow without people telling you what they don't like about your work.
Jernej Srebrnič yeah I’m a tad worried how people will take it. But I didn’t want to make a fluff video where it’s just generic stuff
Wow, this is really valuable critique. As an amateur photographer with a lot less experience, I’d like to offer a different perspective on the ‘pretty girl’ photos. Sure, for a viewer with no relationship to the person, they may add nothing unique or interesting to art. But from the perspective of the girl, the photo may be worth a lot. It could be a very rare time she sees herself as pretty, and that could mean a lot.
I'd love to see another one of these videos if you are so inclined.
Great video! Was fun listening to the critiques! 😊
I really enjoyed your critique of these images, lots of good, honest information delivered at a good pace. I feel that I picked up a lot of quality tips from your video and so can give you a very positive critique of your critiques :-) Thank you, I appreciate your effort!
Thanks man. Really loved your opinion. And loved your experience! Inspiring!
Very interesting and I'm sure helpful to those that submitted. Just found your channel and it's traffic. It's very interesting and helpful to see your take on things. I'm Very happy to be a part time photographer but Im always looking to improve my shots. Whether that is wedding or my hobby in street stuff and get the feeling watching your vids I'll do just that. Thanks buddy 🤘
I thoroughly enjoyed this!
Really following your videos on Photography recently buddy. Great information and valuable feedback seeing though the photos. 🤝 Cheers
Fantastic review & I’m so grateful to you for doing it. I learned so much from seeing how you ‘see’ and how you think. Lovely Jubbly 💐
Photo club photogs would be sobbing in the corner...LOL {president of local club] Like your not sugar coating responses, too much of the "every player wins a prize" around these days. No advance without faults being pointed out. Good vid.
Hopefully those who submitted work take this in the wayā that it was intended.
@@TinHouseStudioUK As comp judges always say...this is my opinion only , say what has to be said,let's end the world of constant thumbs up today., only way to learn. ;}
Great. Honest. Enlightening. Thank you!
Loved your critique and followed and agreed on evedything mentioned
Those hands positions are wrong regardless of your food photography background. Thank you for your honest feedback, it helps a lot not only for portrait photos but also for understanding better lights and colours from a profi point of view. Cheers!
Thanks Dan. Glad the video was of use :)
We need more!!! Awesome
Great comments, had a lot of the same thoughts!
One thing with a couple of the first portraits, the lady’s nose was poking out of her cheek so makes the nose look big and prominent in the photo.
I always try and keep the nose within the cheeks. Just a matter to turning their head more towards the camera so the nose is within the face rather than it sticking out.
Love that you’re no BS with them! It’s great to get that kind of feedback, it’s the kind of advise you remember and will apply. If you’re soft on feedback then not much will change and people will carry on making the same mistakes.
Loving your channel Scott! 👌
Awesome insight, such a valuable video
Brutal... and useful... just discovered your channel... thoroughly enjoying...
Really nice video , i like the fact that you never mock people and if someone wants to refine his technique can take many points from content like this 👍
Refreshingly honest critique, I'm a complete novice starting out on my journey to become hopefully a competent photographer. It's fantastic to listen to you and other photographers who are at the top of their game to get some advice on what's good and what to stay away from.
Such a great video and a great eye to detail. I think looking at some of these images I can see people are learning to shoot and edit from youtube. Some of these images I can see take on styles from certain youtubers and the editing, especially the sharpening techniques I have also seen in many youtube how to vids.
Thanks JJ . Hope this video is of use to a few people
I hope you can do another one of these videos, as I would love to send in some photos. Regardless of whether or not you critique my work, I love seeing the feedback and got a lot of value out of watching this video. More please!!
I have saved this video as a valuable resource, and a reminder before taking portraits, in fact, anything on the importance of creating a unique image,
I agreed with you on 99 percent of your (fair) critique.
Love your work.
Ever considered making a book?
Thank you.
you should look at a thumbnail and be like oh that works....
Thanks for the video it is helpful, reminds that one should not just focus on the technical and message part we also need as photographer do a little research to see what’s been done and what’s not so we don’t fall into the dullness , it’s not like we are going to make groundbreaking stuff but at least interesting .
Great , video I learned a lot thank-you.
Matrix photo design thanks
Great feedback on these photos. I'm a street photographer who dabbles in portraits and travel. I was once a food photographer but thanks to COVID-19 and the decimation of the restaurant industry in the US food photography is not high on the priority list of restaurants trying to stay open. That said, I saw a lot of the same things you saw and some I wouldn't have picked up immediately. It had more to do with your lighting commentary on some of the more professional photos. As a street photographer, I deal with all sorts of lighting conditions for which I have zero control over. If capture a good street portrait or candid moment it's all about timing. You should do more of these videos. I like that you didn't mention names. I know some other RUclips personalities doing photo critiques and they make it a point to call out the people by name who submitted photos to them.
The best feedback I ever got in my 25-year creative career was like this (not a photographer). He's actually being kind because he isn't on the hook for your work like you would be if you worked for him. It accelerates you because you know the cold hard truth from someone you look up to. Anything sugar-coated will at best slow your progression down, set you back, or completely derail your growing taste in your work.
I enjoyed this very much. May I ask when you might give another critique?
Cracking the f up at his reaction to the grandmas photo.
Finally this video 🎉
I filmed it a while back, but its been in the upload que since then
At 20:15
This would look a lot better with a thin analog watch with a leather strap.
And maybe even better without a watch.
This looks like a 3-button Casio. Keeps perfect time, but that is about all.
Awesome video, thanks for sharing
Agustin Tajch thanks for watching
Brilliant
The last thing you want to worry about is people's feelings. For some people it's about the photographer - baby stage. You really want honest feedback from someone who is better than you. More people could do with a mentor. I say that in an encouraging way. It should only be your mum that loves everything you do ; )
"We'd be seeing the whole building" lol
I enjoyed watching your reviews and thoughts about the work submitted. However the ring light in your glasses was really distracting at the end.
yeah I shoudl have taken them off before doing the ending bit. I dont usually wear them.
Missed this submission! Where can we be notified up about upcoming review videos?
Travis Wallace usually on here or via the Facebook grouo
What do you mean "I wasn't any good at it"? I think they are wonderful. Were can I see more?
I dont understand how people dont realize their shot is out of focus. Loved the harsh review , would love to hear you destroying my work aswell lol
you should do the same thing on beverage photography...if you do, count me in :)
I don’t like direction bride is facing first photo but expression is fine. I don’t think you need all smiley photos all the time. 2nd photo boring. 3rd photo is over lite. 4th image bad composition. Too light. 5th agree. But so bright on top part.
Hello Scott. I just discovered your channel and I like your content. I think it's going to be helpful for me starting out. I missed this opportunity by 7 months but do you think you might do another review like this soon? Or if you have a few minutes to critique 3 portraits from a shoot I did recently? Like if I just sent you a WeTransfer and you give me a few comments by email? I'm sure you have no time for that but just thought I'd ask just in case.
"I don't like bokeh, I don't like blurred backgrounds" while reviewing portraits.
Would you consider doing this again ?
Its a shame that the portraits I had taken in the past are on film. My approach was rather different in that I did not have my subject looking at the camera. Maybe I get some converted to jpeg.
😅 edit-edit-edit. . . I'll work on that
Just keep plugging away :)
@@TinHouseStudioUK Will do! Loved this sort of video and really interesting self reflection on food photographers and hands. Bokeh girl was shot on 120 - Portra 400 and digitized with my 100mm macro. Was confused when there was EXIF data at first. Thanks again for your time and thoughtfulness in this video.
I was a little unclear on whether or not you picked up on that pilot’s mask being a but distracting. For me it was.
You mentioned avoiding taking pictures of pretty girls with pretty lighting setups. What would have been the alternative for someone reaching for professional work. Hopefully that’s not too broad.
You'd better get some Regaine! My whole brand is being bald with a beard so I'll just end up 'Retraining in Cybersecurity' or something like the government posters if you go bald...
haha
@8:53 The dark pole/line coming out of her head in the background needs to be Photoshopped out.
Also: your Facebook link is broken and the instagram tagline repeats in itself, has on a few vids from Copying and Pasting. I hate doing shit like this but I couldn't DM you and I ignored it the last couple of times so I knew you didn't realise...
Good reviews though.
Thanks for the heads up. I hadn't noticed.
@@TinHouseStudioUK No worries, thanks for reminding me to go for a run in another video. Mental health maintenance is super important at this time of year, especially in the current situation.
I am back again.....👋👋👋
rohit winning !
@@TinHouseStudioUK yepeeeeeee.!!!
I wonder how many get upset, or can't take the critique of their work, I suppose the brutality, is the only way to makes you better especially if your been paid for it, I have a brutal friend who a professional videographer she pulls no punches.
ABC
Allison Davies
Why did you think you were not a very good portrait photographer?
Bro your audio is so hissy
Just and FYI you wearnt a bad portrait photographer from what you showed us
I just don't need to see ribs lol
LoL. Lots of time on his hands...
Nothing you’ve shown here is anything we haven’t seen before. It’s all been done before. So saying that as a negative thing for an image is pointless.
God forbid a portrait should contain bokeh or a pretty girl. Just a bit condescending and biased on those notes. There is such a thing as beauty portraits, and if you are a headshot photographer, you will get beautiful people once in awhile. I think if you are going to offer a useful critique, you need to qualify value statements that are entirely based on personal preference. (Those shots were not my work btw).
damn that whole video only had mediocre and awful photos :O
Cyber Mike I think some were above average in this batch. Send your portraits over next time I’m doing this and I can add them to the video 👍
@@TinHouseStudioUK sure, tell me when and ill send my work in
@@cybermike-exe next one is on photo stories and or editorial. Should be launched in the fb group or on the community tab here next week ish...
Some feedback for you. Your website loads way to slow and looks very dated. Your portfolio took 24 seconds to load for me. That's terrible! Your site needs to load in a few seconds. You are loosing clients :D
Tune in next week for an honest review of Ferrari cars by a Porsche employer.
