Its eastertime and I just bought a Pigtone Super Overdrive for 20€s: its yellow, its got two birds and it REALLY sounds balanced eq wise and soft clipping, gonna try it with my strat and a more bassy pedal..., cheers! : )
SD-1! I use it as booster before OD-3 and it's a perfect pair I must say! My settings for SD-1 are: level - max., drive - min., tone - 12 o'clock; OD-3: level - 12:30 to 1 o'clock, drive - 7:30 o'clock (just a bit more than min.), tone - 12 o'clock. Drive and level of the OD-3 may vary a little depending on the amps I use. These two boxes give me four differend souns - clean, warm smooth drive (sd-1), crunch (od-3) and bright and reach overdrive (both). Try it out, everybody!
All I know is that I just bought a Boss SD1. It gave creamy smooth over drive through my tube amp. Amp volume low. Drive on pedal low and pedal volume fairly high. Tone to die for. That's it! No arguments.
This is a good demo. You played the same riff at the same tempo for the same amount of time, and only changed the settings. That really made it easier to get an idea of what each pedal is like! I noticed the SOD pedal sounds cheap, but a lot of "classic" songs were made with cheap equipment. The SOD sounds like a Kinks record, whereas the TS9 sounds like a SRV record.
SD-1 had a little bit more gain and it clipped a little bit harder. The TS-9 was a bit more subtle and articulate in the upper-mids. For me, SD-1 all the way; but honestly, the tone in in the hands. I'm of the opinion that no one could tell the difference if he didn't tell us which one he was playing.
Great Video! I personally like the sound of the SD-1, in fact I own one and have no complaints whatsoever! Tube screamers are great but I think that the Boss SD-1 is totally underrated by the "boutique" brigade :-p
I just bought an SD-1. I compared it against a Bad Monkey in the store, and both cost the same (in that store). The Bad Monkey is very similar and even has 2 tone controls, BUT.. put the gain in your amp in the overdrive channel all the way up and the drive on your bad monkey also, now hear the noise.. it's not normal white noise, it sounds like interference. Now tap the Bad Monkey with your hand, and you will find out it's microphonic! I chose the SD-1...
But the Bad Monkey just blows the competition at this price point out of the water. It has an edge over these ODs with dedicated Bass and Treble knobs so one can dial in more tones out of one box. More balanced IMO and versatile, with a direct mixer out as well. Again, to each his own. I discovered the Bad Monkey 7-8 years ago and no other pedal at this price point has come close yet. So it has stayed strong on my pedal board for all these years. Again, to each his own.
@slapbackrules No what I mean here is that you can use any overdrive pedal (TS9 or SD-1) as a booster by setting the LEVEL on max and the DRIVE on half or less. In this video it makes my tube amp (a Fender Champ) crunch because it is already on the verge of breaking up. The pedal just pushes it. In this particular video I don't use the two pedals together (I have another video where I do it) just one pedal or the other. I don't know it I am clear but I hope so.
@fixxxer602 Thanks. Yes the little Fender Champ sounds surprisingly good although it can be a bit "boxy" due to its small speaker. The Visual sound Open Road sounds seems to sound great and b a bit different form everything else.
great demo.. Rule #1 must have a good tone 2 begin with and your nailed it... Pedals sound good but I will stil take the Visual Sound open Road pedal anyday!!
Tastey stuff. I read the SD-1 is almost a direct copy of 808, except for some mods for smoother gains but can be modded back to a TS808 circuit. Some people say it sounds "fizzy" but your audio sounds pretty good. I would like to hear a pairing for the Fulltone Fulldrive & SD-1.
Great tone man!!! both pedals are awesome! The ts9 more expesive but a legend pedal. Ts 9 work more light as a booster. and sound more blues than Boss!
@slapbackrules I prefer to have OD first then Distortion going this way: GTR -> Overdrive (boost) -> Distortion -> Clean Amp. It depends what distortion you use but when I have two gain pedals together like this I prefer not to set the gain on full on any of the pedals since when they are on together, you get a lot of gain. On trick is to start with every setting at 12 (half) on the two pedals and adjust from there.
Hi, how are you? congratulations for your videos I have a question when you said that Ts9 is a booster, does it means that the sequence of effects is GUITAR-->Boss (here MAIN DISTORTION)--> TS9 (BOOSTER)? if it is right, how can you make crunch sound? Activating ONLY the Ts9? Thanks a lot
I tried yr advice: Guitar-->ts9 (drive 11 o'clock, tone 9)-->distortion ( gain 9:30, filter 3) and it sounds very well... I have a strato with 50's style single coil... thank you very much... I like yr suggestions too.
I think SD1 all the way too. I just think the player on video should say what he thinks as he of course hears it without it being uploaded and recorded onto audio for internet... Gives us a guitarist perspective...
Hi, I wrote a blog post about it on www.guitartoneoverload.com. I personally prefer the Tube Screamer as I find it "rounder". The SD-1 has a bit more grit which suits some players better and I think it is a great pedal. To over simplify, I would say the TS-9 is better for suited for blues-rock and the SD-1 better suited for rock
thanks a lot.. yr sound is very good.. :) and you have right..the clip was another one. only a last question... is it right have a chain like guitar-->distortion-->od(boost)-->AMp or is it better have GTR-->od(boost)-->distortion-->AMP? on a clean channel, I mean... thank you very much
I usually prefer sd1 and this video is no exception. Ts9 is maybe slightly nicer as a boost though. Ts9dx is significantly better than both of these though.
I don't understand how you're trying to compare them but your not even playing the same riffs with the same settings.... Personally I like the Boss SD-1 it gets less muddy in my opinion and is more simple. Very very affordable too
Well I'd say definitely overrated, overhyped and overpriced. If you think about what really makes the TS808 cost that much more than a Boss SD-1, critically, examining the circuits, components, build quality, etc. you realise that the only justification for it that you might be able to find is little more than superficial - it's just SRV hero worship/mythology, essentially. Good pedal, but nothing special or magical and there are a number of alternatives out there that do the same job just as well for a considerably lower price.
tube screamer is more green sounding ....whilst the boss...is kinda yellow-ish
Michael Seymour best comment ever
lol
Not too far off
U know what?
Its true
Its eastertime and I just bought a Pigtone Super Overdrive for 20€s: its yellow, its got two birds and it REALLY sounds balanced eq wise and soft clipping, gonna try it with my strat and a more bassy pedal..., cheers! : )
BOSS SD-1 all the way
SD-1!

What a nice tones. I think your SD-1's tone is the sound that I am finding. Thanks!
Merci pour ce test qui permet de faire le comparatif dans de bonnes conditions, à priori une préférence la Boss
All I know is that I just bought a Boss SD1. It gave creamy smooth over drive through my tube amp. Amp volume low. Drive on pedal low and pedal volume fairly high. Tone to die for. That's it! No arguments.
Just baught a 1986 for 20 dollars at a pawn shop. I will definitely be running it after my moxon od808
I've had my SD-1 since the early 80's and never have I compared it to a Tubescreamer.
Thanks for showing me something new.
I love SD1
SD1 is the best “mid-hump” style pedal out there.
i love the last move 😉 in the end, for some use the ts has more individuality
@orlandoontiveros Glad you liked the video! I would say I prefer the Tube Screamer with single coil pickups and the SD-1 with humbuckers.
This is a good demo. You played the same riff at the same tempo for the same amount of time, and only changed the settings. That really made it easier to get an idea of what each pedal is like! They're Kinman AVn Blues pickups. I usually put the detailed list of the gear I use in the description section of the video
TS9 here. Adds a distinctive midrange snarl. Sure, the SD1 has more gain, but it seems to lack punch here.
The amp and effect settings are in the description of the videos on 99% of my videos. Note that I use a 70s Fender Champ which is a rather bright amp.
Great Video! I personally like the sound of the SD-1, in fact I own one and have no complaints whatsoever! Tube screamers are great but I think that the Boss SD-1 is totally underrated by the "boutique" brigade :-p
I agree! SD 1
Glad I just ordered it 👊

I liked the SD-1 but for a straight-up mid hump boost, TS9 is better. I like both, stacked, and a BD-2 makes 3. You can do a lot with those 3 pedals.
good job! nice tone!
Single note TS9, power chord SD-1
love ur tone bro! awsum!
SD1 sounded more full
@StudioSonico Thank you! Yes indeed, the two pedals are very good overdrive. To me the SD-1 is more "rock" whereas the Tube Screamer is more "blues".
@fixxxer602 Thanks. Yes the little Fender Champ sounds surprisingly good although it can be a bit "boxy" due to its small speaker. The Visual sound Open Road sounds seems to sound great and b a bit different form everything else.
@centrothl That's right. The TS sounds a bit rounder thanks to mellower highs but the "agressivity" of the SD-1 can be nice too.
great demo.. Rule #1 must have a good tone 2 begin with and your nailed it... Pedals sound good but I will stil take the Visual Sound open Road pedal anyday!!
I have both... But i love SD1 always...
Goos Demo Video!
@Obelix5150 That's right, it's got more of a biting rock feel. Amazing pedal for the price.
Inderdaad; Niets is echt moeilijk!
Ga zo door man!
great video

@JorgeCabrera58 Hi, no the TS9 has no tube. The "Tube Screamer" name is a marketing ploy, it is "supposed" to sound like a tube amp.
@heliobluesrock You mean the old Boss ME5 from when I was young? That was a cool piece of gear!
The Sd1 with the RAT sounded like the great ME5's Distortion boosted!
Hi, how are you? congratulations for your videos
I have a question
when you said that Ts9 is a booster, does it means that the sequence of effects is GUITAR-->Boss (here MAIN DISTORTION)--> TS9 (BOOSTER)?
if it is right, how can you make crunch sound? Activating ONLY the Ts9?
Thanks a lot
@Lubial It sure is an excellent pedal for the price. I still find the TS9 a bit rounder though, it is a matter of taste I suppose.
I tried yr advice: Guitar-->ts9 (drive 11 o'clock, tone 9)-->distortion ( gain 9:30, filter 3) and it sounds very well... I have a strato with 50's style single coil... thank you very much... I like yr suggestions too.

that's why SRV used the Tube Screamer, but SD-1 beats it up a little bit lol.
thanks a lot.. yr sound is very good.. :) and you have right..the clip was another one.
only a last question... is it right have a chain like guitar-->distortion-->od(boost)-->AMp or is it better have GTR-->od(boost)-->distortion-->AMP? on a clean channel, I mean...

excelent video!!
@Sstrikerful I think the TS9 sounds more bluesy but I suppose that is quite subjective
Respond to this video... And you are right, the Tube Screamer is a bit rounder but a bit less gainy...
How come you have a dutch saying on your wall? Great demo by the way
@TheEchomaker I am preparing a video featuring the Digitech Bad Monkey, amazing overdrive and very cheap
I find the TS9 shines as a boost as opposed to an overdrive. Prefer the SD1
@Euphoriaman thanks!
@salesmanwho Thanks. I used to live in Holland (Amsterdam).
yeah my dads friend told me to try a SD1, I own an old TS-10 and a newer TS-9 with the hot switch, I prefer the 10 over the 9
The ts9 has more top end but it sounds thin to me
I usually prefer sd1 and this video is no exception. Ts9 is maybe slightly nicer as a boost though. Ts9dx is significantly better than both of these though.
I love rat and sd1
@vladxv Thank you!
I have a fender blues deluxe combo tube does anyone think the sd-1 will help give me a warmer trower tone? as well as drive a fuzz face?
I like the SD1 better especially at full gain 1:35 ish. has a faint oldschool marshall vibe.
@pinoyblues Thank you!
WHAT ARE YOUR AMP SETTINGS
I don't understand how you're trying to compare them but your not even playing the same riffs with the same settings....
Personally I like the Boss SD-1 it gets less muddy in my opinion and is more simple. Very very affordable too
hmm weird, boss is over $100 cheaper yet i like it more than the analogman ts-9. Thanks for saving me money dude.
I personally prefer the Analogman TS9, I found it "rounder"
@toodiesel thx!
my boss sd-1 used to bleed through to the clean channel when it was off, this is the only fault i could find
epic SD-1 is epic.... 'nuff said
tubescreamer just makes the guitar sound more alive then the sd-1, but the sd-1 is not bad either.
Boss SD1 is warmer, so to my taste is better! Ts9 could be good as clean boost after SD1 !!!
No it's a made in Taiwan one (bought in the 90s).
@ubermetaldood Thank you!
is that a Japanese SD-1?
The Boss sd1 is a great overdrive pedal love it please check my demo of it and then the Mooer green mile on my channel cheers !
I thought that the boss really kept the integrity of the strat yhr most
A Stratocaster is starting to sound so generic. Especially the in-between pickup positions. But I have 3 Strats!
I own both and by far the cheaper boss pedal is better.
TS 9 is better , more sustain and round sound
sd1 it is
tube screamer is thinner
@rbigeared Hit the nail on the head :)
Sd-1 sounds more bluesy
i thinks its stealing a lot of brightness... especiallly the chords doesnt sound as good as with the ibanez... thats where the price comes from ^^
il ts9 mi piace di più...il suono è più caldo...poi sono gusti
Sd1 and clip the c6 off
Nothing like strong spanky picking on a strat.
SD 1!!!! wins hahahahaha for its cheap cost
tropbien
Tube screamers suck. Very over rated and just don't understand the fascination.
So saying that I like the SD-1 better.
And ya, that's just my opinion.
tube screamer is totally overrated, all overdrive pedals are almost the same unless it has eq settings
yup...tube screamer is good.... not a bad pedal at all. Over rated? Maybe.
Good pedal, but nothing special or magical and there are a number of alternatives out there that do the same job just as well for a considerably lower price.
conclusion: boss pedals suck because of the buffer feature =/
