You are the best, Jef! I have completely neglected my Maschine + and with watching this video you once again inspired me to delve on into the architecture 🎹
That was my intention! I was actually feeling like moving on from Maschine recently, but pulling it up in standalone mode reminded me how great it is. I still maintain my gripes, and hopes that they bring a lot more in the near future!
I bought the update for my MK3 and to my very pleasant surprise it installed perfectly on the Maschine Plus. A very nice bonus while waiting for the plus update.
Your videos on the Maschine+ have been, and continue to be, so helpful . Glad to see you are able to kick back and have fun with it again. No standalone device is without it's shortcomings but for my workflow and needs the + is pretty dang good. It's not the box's fault NI is a little irritating, lol.
Hey Jeff - thanks for the video. I’ve been with Maschine from MK2 then MK3 and then M+ which I thought I hoped to gig with. As much as I like M+ I sold it and went back to MK3 and a laptop as more powerful / flexible. I like the Maschine environment but M+ needs to do more for its price - I would say the same for Push too. BUT … considering what is available for making music these days we should not complain, we have great tools now at different prices. none perfect but all great - anyone complaining should think again
Yeah, just the tip of the iceberg there! I've stopped buying... I have enough to last me a lifetime! (OK maybe once in a while I visit my pusher... I mean record store!)
Hey Jeff Great Vids buddy… interesting to hear about the comment you made about the Mic and how you would like phantom power, in Studio. Use a condenser into an interface then send the output to Maschine and put XLR /Jack adaptor into mic input. Works amazingly good. 👍
It’s such an amazing unit. My only gripe is needing to bring a battery pack with it when on the go. I’ve been posting a beat daily on my shorts, all made with Maschine+ in standalone mode. Big inspiration machine for me.
Arguably the learning about different genres from one’s personal musical home is one of the best use cases for the various expansions. And maybe finding a new or additional musical home. 😀
I only use the + in controller mode because its so much better with the software and large monitor. That being said, i do try to use the screens as much as possible - i see it as a hybrid between hardware and software. Which i really love. I also like the better build of the + 👍
The thing I love about Maschine and Maschine+ are the pads - probably the best I have felt. What I hate - DAW interaction/integration. Push checks the DAW box for Live, just doesn't have the pads, imo. Yes, the pads are full MPE and all of that - I am speaking to touch and feel.
I think that with the sounds and Expansions Maschine+ is much more fun than Abletons sounds to rock up with to a jam - plus it's so interesting to sit down and look at the patterns to learn about different styles and get inspired. I wished it was quicker to decifer which chords and melodies are played, like with a keyboard/chors visualizer
@@Phadddy I just never got inspired... the Maschine ones have a great balance of good sounding kits and loops that get ideas flowing. Sometimes I just take a loop from a certain genre and use that as inspiration for my own loop. Just very well curated.
Still patiently waiting for that long promised M+ update... That Ableton Push 3 is becoming more tempting by the day, but I do still love my M+. Your videos got me off the ground entering the NI ecosystem, and I'm still greatly appreciative for that.
I almost purchased the machine standalone. But I saw that it still requires a power source. If they made it completely standalone, I would consider the purchase
Generally I really like your videos and your calm, fair and creative way of looking at things! But you don't convince me this time: I would still regard it as a form of punishment, if I had to create songs with Maschine+... Instead I have meanwhile learned how to get a fast transfer of Maschine content (both samples and midi grooves) over to the new Cubase 14 Drum Machine - which has a ten times better and smarter workflow. And I can use that not just on my music PC, but also on my Surface Pro 8 notebook - and that is more mobile in a MUCH more capable sense, with some connection to pads or a Korg Microkey, than Maschine+ will ever be, especially looking at the fact that I can use basic projects and ideas seamlessly across PC and touchscreen notebook.
Ha! That's fair... and I was with you... until I tried other competitors. I bought an SP, and promptly returned it. Things are just so much easier on the M+. And for the record, I don't make songs on the M+, but definitely get ideas going. And it is nice to get out of the studio!
@@AKkov First sample export of complete kits with Kitmaker. This creates folders of all kits of an expansion with their sample content. Then drag and drop whole drum kits or single kit pieces (depending on Maschine projects and groups) to create equivalent kits in the Cubase 14 drum machine. For Midi drag & drop transfer you have to mark all instruments in a group and then switch "Group midi batch setup" (in the lower zone) to "sounds to midi notes". It may create some unnecessary tracks in Cubase when you drop the midi, but you can just drag your imported midi to your drum track and delete the unncessary tracks immediately. It's a bit more tedious, when creators of the expansions have spread their drum instruments and sounds across tracks and groups too much, instead of keeping at least drum instruments together. - Oh, and I do NOT import from Maschine within Cubase (complicated and error prone setup). I just have Maschine standalone running in parallel with Cubase, using a Windows Asio driver for Maschine instead of my Cubase soundcard driver. That way the drag and drop export and import is always easy and straightforward on my Windows 11 PC, and while switching back and forth I keep good overview in both apps.
@@jefgibbons Perhaps you get the occasion to try a Surface Pro variation some day: I run it with a very small Apogee (Asio for headphones out) and use a small Korg Microkey as controller. The combination is nearly as mobile as Maschine+, but vastly more flexible and powerful. I can't run big projects with tons of plugins on a Surface Pro, but have no problem to get one or two dozen tracks for song creation and idea recording including effects easily. And in sharp contrast to Maschine+ I have all the VSTis I want to carry around at my fingertips: Halion, Kontakt, Synth Plugins, Keyscape, you name it, and all that with a MUCH better project overview than anything Maschine delivers. If I want to use pads, I use the small footprint of an IK Multimedia Pad (significantly smaller than Maschine, but just as responsive).
Is Maschine 3 software now compatible with Maschine+ ? I thought it is not. The new midi editing tools are now accessible via the controller? That would be awesome.
Your videos have taught me a lot about how to make best use of my Maschine Mk3, and yes, the Maschine+ is still a great device. It’s also competitively priced these days. But because I really need audio tracks that are easy to use in standalone, and having seen the recent MPC 3.0 beta and its arrangement functionality, I just ordered an MPC key 37. So I guess I am going to the Dark SIde 😂. I haven’t totally abandoned Maschine, but NI needs to convince me it still believes in the platform. The downgraded Maschine functionality in the new keyboards sends a worrying signal.
@ There will be a steep learning curve, I am sure. It took me a while to become semi-fluent with Maschine and I expect the same on the MPC. And I will of course keep an eye on Maschine and your channel!
Absolutely! Just plug it into your computer and use Maschine 3 software... then load your instrument and auto-sample! Probably should have made that clear... That can then be easily loaded onto M+ for standalone.
You are so right, Jef! Maschine is still powerful and fun, despite the complaint’s. I bought one used 3 years ago, and I’m still learning new techniques every time I use it. Great video!
I've got this annoying issue with my M+, even after a full factory reset - shift+transport to scrub through a track just stops working randomly, pressing VOL/SWING/TEMPO resets it, but it's pretty irritating! Am I alone in this?
I'm not the biggest grove box guy to begin with. they tend to be limiting. Avid used would say that's the allure. Limitation makes you more creative. The price to me for the things that it lacks, is s deal breaker for me. I have the Maschine Mikro MK3 and the Maschine MK2. They work for me because I got them both for under 225 used, because I play only at home/studio. with my tiny computer running on battery or laptop I can have the same setup...minus the 900+ price tag. Real talk Jeff, 900 and I can't do everything.... No phantom Power? How does and engineer put in a mic port with no phantom power?
All good points, but the most important one is knowing that you're not a groove box guy, and the whole point of this vid is: for those who ARE it is one of the best out there! Don't forget you can cut that 900 down if you buy this one used as well! No phantom power, you can just use a dynamic mic! If you have to have a condenser you can get a phantom power box for $20.
Not being able to actually program synths on Maschine plus is really a major disappointment for me…I have zero interest or need for presets…When I bought it and read that it ran massive and Reaktor I thought I was set but all you can do is tweak presets it’s absolutely useless as anything more than a drum machine/sampler…The poly synth/bass synth and monark are fine for simple sounds but it’s not enough for modern day production.
Love the sounds, but the complexity of the MK3 unit is frustrating. Owned 2 years, and after hours of programming and watching your videos, I still struggle to integrate my MK3 into my DAW. I feel I’m constantly doing more setup than production. Even in your video, you repeat…”not that bad…”. Well, frankly it is that bad. NI has made some amazing software that should be much better and they have had years to improve DAW integration, but they just continue to add great content without making the actual use of that content better. I should be able to load a song kit and play it into my DAW just like my synths and it should record…instead again I’m losing time setting up and failing at integration.
Interesting. You usually state you're not getting paid for the review, but didn't this time. Then you went on to say how good it was even after previously saying Maschine 3 was disappointing. Hmmmm
If Ni put a bigger cpu in this device to handle all NI software even if you had to use some type of file system with a limit and could pick and choose what you put on there, ability to make custom chord sets, and for the love of God full daw plugin integration, i would not have bought push 3 and would have upgraded to m-plus from mk3.
