My grandma planted a tree Everytime one of us grandkids was born, I'm 36 and my oak tree is amazing! We always joke with my brother because his got damaged by the hurricane years ago and it's half the size of all the others but my grandparents backyard is amazing with these trees growing oldest is 43 years old, all together there's 17 trees representative of the 17 grandkids Anyways it's a cool story and it was a tradition she learned in Mississippi by her grandmother!!!
Yes! Trees first. So many homesteaders talk about how they regret putting off their orchard plans since they take the longest to mature. Good call Kevin!
Our big dogs ruined every tree we planted! The last passed a year ago and while we miss him, out very large new fruit trees have been left to alone by our by our lap dogs! Can't wait for the pears, cherries, apples, plums and peaches this year. Yes they were pricey to buy trees that age but worth it! Unfortunately last year the big game came in and ate our harvest. The electric fence is now in place, the netting bought and in a few years we will then share a little more, maybe lol.
Meyer lemon is my absolute favorite citrus. My elderly tree is a champ. Plus, its thorns deterred a probable criminal hopping my fence, a fact I’m really not sorry about.
The power hungry, big ego, controlling politicians wouldn’t allow it. They would make city ordinances and city codes so that you could not do this. I’m surprised no one from the city has started to harass this man with some obscure city code. Fines and threats of being dragged into court will follow.
A citrus hedge. What a great idea! An evergreen privacy hedge that will look great and smell great. And since it’s on the property line, your neighbors will benefit, too. Good fences make good neighbors.
Im 16 and I wanna build something like ur doing, i enjoy wathcing your vids since you make them really well and u have a great personality, excited to see you grow this channel
Right on! That yard is going to be so abundant in a few years! It will be fun to see the progress a year from now.... in 5 years your yard will be amazing!
I was curious, are your neighbors pretty chill and supportive of your epic garden or are they not talkative/ jerk neighbors. Mine are super supportive and excited to see my garden expand (especially since they will get some of the spoils lol)
@@epichomesteading heck yeah, i hope your supportive neighbors get inspired by your awesome set up and plan one of there own. I've managed to get a few people to start some containers come this spring
I just planted eight dwarf Valencia, eight dwarf Tahitian green pamplemousse , and five dwarf minneola Tangelo. There’s nothing like a tall glass of juice to start the day. Congratulations from Hawaii.
I just love this channel . I live 100 miles from Glacier National Park in the lush green valleys of Glacier topped mountains. Surrounded by huge blue lakes and wide deep rivers as well as Glacier streams and springs you can drink! One of the most astoundingly beautiful places on earth! However when I wake up to 5 inches of new snow and watch a citrus line of hedges in beautiful sunshine as I just am getting the garden on paper, im so very jealous of you!!! The grass is always greener... I guess we are all pretty lucky to live is so much different beauty here. Maybe tomorrow I can have 5 hours of pure sun. Lol Thank you for the awesome vids!
I enjoyed this video way more than I thought. I feel I live my garden life vicariously through you since I can’t get much done at the moment where I’m at. Thank you 🙏🏽 for sharing your journey! I love being able to witness the growth of your homestead through the lens of your camera.
Hey Kevin :) If you remove the current producer and put 2-3 in its place I highlyyyy suggest a Tangelo, they are soooo delicious in general but especially when grown at home!! and I think they can be overlooked. Another suggestion, if you can source them in the US, we have a very cool native in Australia called caviar lime/finger limes. If you don't know what they are they are basically limes with all the juice being contained in these little caviar like pockets and are perfect for garnishing as well as using similarly to a regular lime. I just bought one for myself and am keen to see it grow, but like most limes it takes a while to produce (5 years ish I've been told for first fruit and if any set before then it's best to take them off), but it will be so worth it. An additional bonus is they are quite prickly which is good habitat for many small birds :) Looking great, can't wait to do this on my own property one day!
In Florida the government, state I believe, came in and cut down most of the privately owned citrus trees. At the time the commercial growers were dealing with citrus canker. We lost a lot of heritage varieties and diversity, many of which were resistant to the disease. In some cases they even took out non citrus fruit trees. There was no means for the homeowner to object.
My 3 year old daughter just asked "what is he doing mom?" And the best answer I could give her is, "honey, he is putting sunblock on his baby trees." 😁
Plants are excellent for creating a bit of privacy for your property. Having edible plants for privacy is even better! I wish I had the space to do something like this.
Lookin' good, Kevin! I 100% agree that Citrus is something to get excited about and you're going to have a beautiful as well as bountiful orchard! Love getting to see the planting going down (as well as your infectious enthusiasm)! Great to see the soil life so active as well - that is definitely going to benefit the trees. Keep shining your internal grow light on our community, Epic Gardener!
I actually bought my lemon and lime trees last weekend! I will always remember my grandpa picking his lemons off their tree, which was outside their property and become a community tree lol
Your tree cluster in one hole is actually quite encouraging for me because I have 2 mangos and 2 orange trees growing in a similar way for about a 18 months know and I plan on leaving them and seeing how gat turns out
I absolutely love watching you create a homestead from scratch and explaining all your decisions! We are wanting to buy land so this is good to help prepare. Many things I didn’t think about. Btw good choice with mixing up the citrus varieties! Looks great
Awww. You just reminded me of my great-grandmother- she always did a lot of gardening, &bi remember she always had the bottom half of her trees painted white, but I never knew why! I guess that's why!
Hope a near future video is about caring for all those trees, especially irrigation. I’m deciding on fruit tree selection for my yard but am looking for tips on planning.
Just wanted to share with you.. A rosemary hedge around the trees attracts bees and keeps out pests. In your zone it will grow year round and keeps everything nice and tidy.
I have a clementine of some sort and it looks terrible but the fruit is pretty good. Lol Then I have a Navel, Cara Cara, Torocco Blood orange, Improved Meyer, Eureka lemon, Bearss lime(amazing!), and a Kefir Lime tree. I was surprised you planted them so close together, but it’s giving me ideas for my own place!
I'm excited to see those trees develop! I owned a property in E Texas with three lemon trees for a short while. I got hundreds of pounds of HUGE lemons! I even used the leaves when I baked fish for a great citrus flavor.
I did this with elderberry bushes to give me a bit of a sound/sight barrier from one of my neighbors. They work beautifully in my state & provide much-welcome flowers & fruit. "Living fences" are wonderful!
I live in Ontario Canada and I have a pandorosa lemon tree. I bring it inside every fall but it’s really prone to attack by spider mites! PS your new neighbours must be thrilled with all the stuff you’re doing at your place! 🤗 So jealous you can keep your citrus outside all year!
We get hurricanes and a lot of strong winded tropical storms where I live, so all of my fruit trees stay in containers. If a storm comes, I hand truck all of the trees into a shed. Many people here have attempted to grow fruit trees in the ground but always get a visit from Mrs Hurricane.
I bought a house at foreclosure last January in a subdivision with no expectations. To my delight it turns out the developer had a love for fruit trees (or more likely they were on sale) and out of the three trees on my property I got a mature apple and plum tree!

Citrus is so abundant I think that is perfect spacing! Improved Meyer Lemon is my favorite, its actually a cross of citron and a mandarin/pomelo hybrid, but they're super easy to peel and remove seeds from, and also much sweeter than lemons!
I'm so excited to watch those babies grow! I tried planting two citrus trees once and it was total mayhem, so I'm looking forward to learning a thing or two :) I must say, that was the sexiest outro I've ever seen, haha!
Suggestion: plant a Black Cherry and a Plum tree. We had both at the house where I grew up and I loved grazing those tree. Come to think of it, if these are going to be close to the street, anyone walking by might enjoy doing the same, so plant them in the middle of the back yard. :)
Citrus is my favorite fruit plants. There are so many variety. I have limited space and I grow 11 varieties all in pots. I live in tropics, so the fruit will be green with the slight lime/ yellow color when it ripe. Less attractive because it's green when ripen, but still taste the same
I also planted a citrus row in my yard with Nagami Kumkuat, Valecia Orange, Sweet Lemon (citrus limetta), Ruby Star Grapefruit, Clementine(hybrid between navel orange and a manderin), Encore Manderin, Lisbon Lemon, Portuguese Navel Orange, Bearss Lime and Key lime :) They are looking good so far. Can't wait to try some fruit :P
I planted a bunch of different citrus fruit trees in a row about a year ago. Then, a bunch of caterpillars nearly destroyed all of them. I can highly recommend planting them at a distance from each other, so a pest can't spread among them so easily.
We planted our citrus three years ago and just got our first cara cara oranges (two and delicious), a bunch of eureka lemons and several Dancy tangerines. Still waiting for the bearss lime, washington navel, clemenine mandarine, meyers lemon and valencia. I'm in zone 9b and we get some frost so we had to place our trees according to where we get frost and where it is more protected. We created a microclimate between a large oak tree, fence and building and those closest to the fence are least frost tolerant and the more hardy citrus are closest to the frost zone. We still cover them with frost blankets if there is a frost warning. I'm looking forward to a lot more citrus this year and next. And, this year we got some dragon fruit cuttings from a friend and my partner will be building a dragon fruit set-up like yours and we'll place them along the fence, near the citrus, for winter protection.
Nice. I have a big lemon tree in my yard (rented), my neighbours have all sorts of other citrus, mango, etc. I'm jealous of everyone with kumquat, I love making kumquat marmalade.
When I have a lot of trees to whitewash I use a car was mit. Makes it very efficient and I get great coverage. Works well for painting banister spindles too
I wish citrus could grow in MN! We planted a lemon seed and we actually got one to sprout! It will never fruit in our environment but it’s a cute little plant!
Amazing! That's a lot of trees to plant in one day! I can't wait for your citrus video. I just received my order for key lime and meyer lemon plants. I'm excited to see how they do in my zone. I'm pushing the envelope a bit by growing them in zone 8a. But that's the kind of rebel I am😎.
This video helps. Reading the tags that come with the tree i figured my trees had to be so far apart. Im got a bunch of trees in pots and ready to go crazy now but using the Ellen White method. ✌️
Congratulations on the nice orchard .We have 2 Navels , 1 Blood Orange, 1 Tangelo and a lemon tree in the yard. Take this from my experience people for some reason feel that they can come get whatever they want. Once in a while we get a person that will ask. So be prepared to find people in your yard going shopping.
