I lived on the street as a child. At night.I hopped fences just to eat from people gardens. I got caught. That guy seen I was eating not stealing. He made me come back day after day to his orchard. He made me work the land. I ended up leaning never to go hungry again.
That’s an incredible story. Thank you for sharing
❤️🙏🏼
A great teacher you were led by and now have become, I'm quite sure. Thank you for sharing your story.
🙏❤💪
@Dana Cassidy Well, the man was kind enough to have sympathy for the boy. Unlike you.
This is how EVERY home should be!
Thank you
I have been gardening for almost seven years and have been reading and researching for much longer. I learned more from this video about pruning a new fruit tree than every other book and video I have watched before. Thank You!
Wow, thank you! I’m so glad you found this so helpful!
I love how tidy and organized this garden bed turned out.
Thank you
This is hands down the best video I’ve watched on pruning! You explain everything so well! I feel like I actually understand WHY I’m cutting it a certain way rather than just following instructions
Thank you! I’m glad you found it so helpful!
Agreed!
I love how truck rises during unloading
🙌🏼
My husband doesn't understand English. Every time you cut a branch, he screams but it's funny, so I won't translate for a while! (smile)
Seeing the latest video all of these trees giving great fruits is so wonderful 😊
This is the first fruit tree pruning video I've watched that has mentioned looking for the direction of the bud before cutting and really thinking about canopy height. Good stuff.
I’m so glad you found it helpful!
I live in the Southern Hemisphere, l have struggled to find a good video on pruning etc. Our climate where l live here in New Zealand is similar to yours, so I just have to reverse the months of the year to follow your directions. We recently purchased an off the grid block of land with a new orchard. We have Blood red and Navel oranges, and mandarins. Unfortunately the neighbours Wagyu cattle got through and destroyed most of our orchard, ( we have had a new boundary fence put in and blocked the passage through our adjoining creek). so I am now nursing the young trees that have survived.
It is spring here and the young trees are full of bud and new shoots. I have been worried about pruning them and shaping the new growth, but you have been very informative, and l feel encouraged to do the necessary deed if l want the best for these trees. Thank you.
Some of our other new neighbours are giving me cuttings off their heritage fruit trees, pear, apple, nectarines, plum, apple, fig, grape vines, bananas, pineapples etc. l have also planted pomegranates, Feijoas, Tamarillo, passion fruit, thornless blackberry, raspberries and blueberries.
Plus I planted the beginnings of a vegetable garden. I can’t wait until we start reaping the benefits of my hard work. People like you are a valuable source of information and encouragement. Thanks again.
I just move in my new home and new yard, I grew up with kitchen gardens and flowers garden , now I will start my own. I found your video it reminded me of how my dad did his garden especially the white wash , watching you will help me start my garden, keep it up. Thank you!!!
Awesome! Thank you
I knew a retired gardener with his own small backyard orchard. He had a 4 step very safe podium ladder. The mature trees were not allowed to grow higher than he could reach from his ladder. It made great sense to me.
Make sure not to plant trees over your sewer line.
Yep, it’s nice to be able to manage trees to the size that works best for us.
Semi-dwarf is usual for backyard homes!!@@urbanfarmstead
Great video. I watched hours of youtube videos before pruning my existing trees and planting new ones. This video alone would have sufficed.
Thank you so much! That was my goal, and I hope more people in your situation will find it helpful as well. Thank you for sharing this feedback.
Just discovered you. Really good video. I have pruning videos and it's incredible how much our methods align. One thing I'd like to add about the paint - another great option is a lime whitewash - much better for the environment and soil if any gets washed into it. Also you mentioned that you aren't worried as much about the winter sun, and that's because of where you are. However, way up here in Zone 4 it's precisely the winter sun that is of concern and why we also whitewash trees. The winter sun warms the trunk up and it expands. Then the cold night temps come and it contracts. This swell/shrink cycle can split bark and lead to gummosis. Peaches are especially vulnerable to this. So for those of you who are in colder climates and think "I don't need to protect my trunk from the sun", you really should. Great video, excited to watch this grow.
You should consider turning that area into a food forest. You can check out my food forest, it's pretty awesome. Basically it would entail adding the 6 other layers of a forest into the planting. Then again, your space is a little more urban (hence the channel) and a wilder look may not be desired. If it were me though, I'd cram the interspaces with bushes, flowers, groundcovers and turn that orchard into an ecosystem.
That presentation on how to prune and where to prune was freaking awesome and simple to understand. Thank you for sharing bud.
All the way from South Africa.
Thank you! I’m so glad you found it helpful!
Agree 100%. Also, nice pun... I seed what you did there.
Great video! Fun fact I cannot but post: I realized the dream of literally year round fruits ready for harvest in my garden by planting one (1!) single tree: My Jamaican cherry produces less in Jan and Feb, but even now I can pluck some sweet additons for muesli or for flavored teas. So wonderful to go out each morning, breathe some fresh air, stretch and bend while plucking and collecting fruits. Such a blessing! Keep up your motivation and disciplined work and your harvest will be totally worth it! And in the meantime I will learn from you for my other fruit trees to come...
Amazing!
I transformed my front yard into an mix use permaculture garden last year. Best decision I ever made.
That sounds awesome!
Down the Urban Farmstead rabbit hole I gooooooooo.........
Haha, thanks Ryan! More videos coming soon
Kyle, you NAILED this video, bud. I would recommend this video to anyone wanting to get started with backyard fruit trees. Clearly communicated content, attention to detail, pruning decisions on point. Well done!
Thank you so much Cameron! That means a lot coming from an experienced home orchard dude like yourself!
I hate you guys!! Your in California nice warm climate most of the year, Cameron favorite trees are citrus not good for my area, zone 6a in Kansas, but soon I have to start doing regular pruning and I will be referring to your videos alot thank you guys
@@urbanfarmstead we lived in New Jersey in Perth Amboy. And we had a big yard. My mom’s Portuguese’s friend was a good gardener. He planted a fig tree. To winterize it he wrapped in burlap and dug a trench and buried under leaves inside the trench and soil. In spring he would dig it out. And tie support on opposite sides so that it would grow straight. He did the same thing with peach tree. After the trees were thick enough he would just wrap it up with thick burlap and leaves. It never died during the winter.
@@gladtidings4all awesome! Thanks for sharing
Great overview. Quality edits and voice over.
I’m leaving a comment for algorithm, it hates long videos like this and this is such a nice one for the gardening side of youtube.
Thank you so much!
Great video
You're the real life FARMVILLE!
Haha, thanks
My dream way of living again, the way I grew up in Jamaica..living in the UK we have a some window to garden but this year I got raspberry and blueberry next year I'm gonna get some dwarf fruit trees...but in containers
That’s awesome! Thank you for sharing
I can't believe how much I learned in 20 min. Great video, thank you so much.
That’s awesome! Thanks!
100k any minute now. congratulations!!! I love your videos! Very informative and practical!
thank you!
This is the best informative video on planting fruit trees 🌳 👌🏾 I feel like an expert and have never planted a tree. Btw, who else he reminds them of Joel Olsteen 😁
This was probably the most informative tree pruning video I've seen. Thanks so much!
Thank you!
Nice video but just a suggestion- if you plant in an off-set pattern (like a zigzag) the roots will have more room than if you but them in a straight line. That can be a big advantage to those of us with even smaller spaces.
Yeah that’s a good method in some situations, but this is what’s best for my situation
@@urbanfarmstead Personally, I like the look of a nice straight line but was just throwing that out there for people like me who have a lot less room to plant.
I have the same sort of project going... Year 2 of planting, 2 Paw Paws, 1 Nikita's Gift Persimmon, Plumcot, Necterine, 3 Varieties of Pomegranate, already have Apple, Cherry, Mulberry, Pear, Mulberry, Apple, Mulberry, Grape, Mulberry, Grape, and Wine Grapes planted xD
Plus have a bunch of berry bushes in pots, Raspberry, Blackberry, Goji berry, Kiwis, blueberry, figs, Strawberries too in the greenhouse.
Plus indoor overwintering plants... Peppers, and Eggplant, but also Papaya Pineapple Red Kiwi and Herbs.
I found your video a few weeks ago. I am planning to get fruit trees in a week or two, and I have watched this video repeatedly. I want my grandchildren to have access to their favorite fruits
Thank you! That’s a fantastic idea
What a great property. I love your house...You're going to have quite the paradise there.
Thank you
@@urbanfarmstead your backyard really is beautiful. wish I had a father like you. going to do this for my kids one day.
Holy Tomato's I never knew you can paint trees! 🎨🌴

Omg the fact you're from Sac too is amazing. Wife and I met in college there and now we are in Texas working on starting out own gardens/orchards!
Pink Lady is the best. I had no idea others sought these.

Me: Cries in zone 5 climate tears :(
😂 Yes, I’m very grateful for the climate here.
I'm a zone 3. 😥 However we just planted two new apple trees and a pear. 🙂
😂 same...I’m 6b. But I wouldn’t change it for anything. I love my winters and all four seasons too much. ❄️ 🌸 ☀️ 🍂
@@Gracenglory5 ya I'm grateful for the 4 seasons but when it gets down to - 40's and - 50c....not so much 😔
I share this dream and the JOY. Just cleared crazy town in my yard and ready to create the food forest. I'm in PNW 8B. THANK YOU!
Great! Happy gardening
Excellent video. Music wasn't too much. To the point without going over details. This was great. Thank you
Thank you
Video request: video explaining the tools you use for what purposes, which brands and why. I know I need better spinning and pruning shears but I am ignorant about which ones to get or what can be avoided and is not necessary.
Thank you for this request. I’ll probably make a video like this done time, but in the meantime I do have a link here, and in all of my video descriptions, to and Amazon page showing many of the garden tools and supplies I use including my favorite Felco 8 pruners.
Just found you mate!!! Subscribed. I have just built a food forest in my backyard and it’s the best thing I have ever done!! Big support from Melbourne, Australia :)
Hi, that’s awesome! Thank you!
@@urbanfarmstead looking forward to learning from eachother mate x
I had an outward facing bud once. So I says, hey bud, I says, maybe you should focus on the here and now. You have a lovely wife, bud, three kids that adore you, and a promising career in the construction finance. So my bud says, he says, you know what, pal, you're right I should count my blessings and just open a new scaffolding branch.
Hahaha 🤣
This series is the BEST!
Thank you!
One of the best videos you'll find on planting/pruning new fruit trees. Short and to the point. Excellent job. Look forward to following your journey.
Glad it was helpful!
Hi, I’m a lifelong gardener from Minnesota, now living on an acre in Santa Barbara, California. We do have mature fruit trees on the property, but I plan to add more. I’ve just been so overwhelmed by the four season gardening here. Your videos have been so very helpful. Thank you!
Hi! An acre in Santa Barbara sounds awesome! Thank you! Happy gardening!
Oh you lucky girl! I lived there in the 70’s and always regretted moving away.
Do you get enough cold days for all fruit trees?

Good thing you mentioned the raining bit. My elberta peach tree will be coming in this Saturday, and it is expected to rain off and on until the end of Tuesday.
Yeah, best to prune in a dry time

Wow, so informative, what a fantastic video, makes me wanting to grow a lot of fruit trees in my backyard.
Thank you so much!
Yeah. The spacing really impressed me too. I wonder if all fruit trees can be spaced and pruned this way. Like the Mango & Sapote varieties.

I planted 25,000 fruit and nut trees this year from seed and cuttings😊
That’s incredible!
Loved "The Rainmaker" reference! Great video!

The outward bud, the angles, the paint…super helpful info! My future little trees might actually stand a chance now 😂 Keep it up!

I'm also commenting because of how quality i feel this video is in every way! Love how visually appealing everything is as well... Then people won't be scared to try it because they see an ugly mess presentation, etc.
Thanks for inspiring more of us to get our purpose & heritage back... Fresh produce is irreplaceable
Great video. Pruning scares the hell out of me!
Thank you! It used to scare me too! I think it scares all of us until we do it for a while and witness the great benefits and results.
Oh im quite a bit jealous of that fruit selection.. not to mention the climate 😅 greeting from finland 😁 im little by little planning my fruit orchard as well, just gotta keep those figs etc in pots to bring them inside over the winters 😋 but still plenty of interesting fruit trees available that survive even here 🙄 (well barely survive, but anyway 🤣 )
Thank you! Yes, I’m very spoiled, but grateful, for the growing conditions we have here.
Can you plant cherry,?American persimmons are cold hardy, and Jujubes are cold hardy too, I Have Contorted So, it grows with interesting shape and is selfruitfull
nothing wrong with clay soils, once you unlock the clay , it is very nutrient dense. Use some gypsum a lot of gypsum, it breaks up the clay , just spread it on the to and it will slowly work it's way down into the soil, makes a huge difference
Yes! Clay is super nutrient dense, especially here in this historic flood area the mineral content is exceptional! I do also add gypsum, just didn’t at this stage. Thank you for sharing your feedback
That's everybody's dream. Well done!
thank you!
What a cool guy
I have been thinking about planting an alley of fruit trees and this video has sealed the deal. Thank you!!

I love how you used the cutting sound with the music 25:18
Adding mulch to a new tree weakens the tree because the moisture is retained in the hole you dug. Don’t mulch directly over the plant and the roots will go searching for moisture and make a stronger plant.
Wowwwwwwww so educational ❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️ Amazing as usual ❤️😻😻😻😻🌺🌺🌺🌺🌸🌸🌸🌸🌸💃🏽💃🏽💃🏽💃🏽💃🏽
