3:20 The reason trenchbroom splits the faces there, is to prevent invalid brushes. This is a really nice feature. When I mapped in Hammer I always had to manually split things like those or be paying close attention to avoid invalid brushes... This is a quirk of the quake/doom family of editors, where a quad has to be perfectly flat (neither concave nor convex). This means TB detects when it's not flat and splits it into triangles to save you from troubles. Before you snapped the vertices to the grid, the quads were still slightly concave because of the misalignment. Snapping made them nice and flat, and TB detected that too and merged the triangles. Smart editor! I'm getting fond of it. :D PS: Thanks for the nice tutorials, btw.
YO DumpTruck! I've been doing Sector based 2D editing with programs like Wadbuilder and DoomBuilder 2. I tried dabbling with Q3Radiant but had no idea what I was doing. Your videos have basically visually shown me the differences. Thank you so much man!
Is there a way of welding (Shift + Alt + Left Click) two vertices of different brushes together?, I know they will not weld, I just want them in the same position...
The latest free version is a cloud based web app with a modified UI. It's a little bit weird, because of the simplification of its design a lot of the functionality is hidden. If you prefer having a proper desktop program I suggest you install the older version 8. It's the one I'm using and for static mesh based mapping works great.
I first got Quake from my Dad's old CD copy from the 90s a few years ago. Now I'm finally trying out mapping. Quake is the gift that keeps on giving.
Reading this makes all the effort worth it. :)

That terrain split in vertex mode is awesome.
Fast and clear explanation of everyhing so far, love the series!

I am happy to read this!! Enjoy your new obsession!
These videos have been such a gift, thank you
I'm so glad!
Thank you Sir dumptruck...your the best AS ALWAYS
3:42 coming back to old days of Doom mapping... :-D
4:33 for me this diagonal line always disappears when I deselect the object, so how do I make it stay?
You need to hit enter to complete the clip operation. Check the manual.
You're on fire! Great stuff. :)
4:40 I don't remember you telling us how to make copies appear next to the brush and keep making copies like that with one button press.
Control + Arrow Keys

I wish I could tell you. I don't do very much vertex editing. The manual covers what you can do quite thoroughly.
This is so cool, it reminds me a lot of SketchUp, have you ever tried it?
Nope but it's def something I want to try.

At 4:36 how did you clip the brush without deleting half of it?
You can cycle through which sides to keep by hitting Shift+ Enter ( if I recall that correctly)
@@dumptruckds Got to now thanks!
