Jay, the original Gansett brewery was in Cranston, RI. My uncle worked there in the 70’s and they had open taps in their lunch room for anyone that worked there to drink as much as they wanted. The 70’s were a crazy time!
Thanks for watching, Dean Adams. I appreciate it! Yes, the Jax Brewery of New Orleans (closed in 1974) had open taps for the workers and for anyone else, off the street, who wanted it (from what older folks have told me).
I had to back the video up couple times. ( Thought you said " The official beer of the " Klan " ) Hahahahaha Drinkin these now. I like em' Cheers Jay !!!
From my own taste tests, I found Narragansett to be a bit heavier, and sweeter and darker than PBR. Both have that classic "American" beer flavor. They just started selling Narragansett here in the Chattanooga Tennessee area at Food City grocery stores. After taking a few swallows of Narragansett, my wife told me of all the beers I have drank around her, this was the first time, she could smell beer on my breath. LOL Gotta love old school beer!
11 years ago... Love watching the reviews years later to learn about what I'm drinking now (found 6 pints at 8.49 at our Publix market close to the work in Tallahassee) I like this one, I have it a 90 out of 100
Jay this is worth a revisit although you may have a hard time to procure it. Was the Beer of the Red Sox from the 30's to the 70's. It's "craft" beer line is slowly growing and widely available but given subtle attention to it is here in Vermont. Narraganset has no brewery of their own yet, so explains the Genessee contract. Cheers!
We are on our way home to Illinois from Florida, and stopped for a night in Chattanooga TN before touring the George Dickel distillery in Tullahoma tomorrow. I found this beer here in Chattanooga. I've never seen it before, but knew when I saw it that had to be an old brand and I just had to buy a 12-pack! I think it's really good. It's a shame that it is not more widely available. Great review Jay, as always!
David Marten Thanks, David. Yeah, the Narragansett line of beers are definitely not sold in Louisiana. It's fun to get various beer brands on road trips.
Narragansett is one of my favorites. I was thrilled when they brought it back a few years back. "The Clam" refers to The Clamshell Performing Arts center in Boston, an outdoor venue, which is the place to go on Independence Day for a free concert by the Boston Pops Orchestra while the fireworks go off in the background.
Good afternoon Jay, I am visiting a friend in Eugene Oregon and saw this at a convenience store and purchased a 6 pack if pint cans. This is the first time seeing this out on the west coast.
I was surprised to find this beer and genesee cream ale and lager at my pleasant view Tennessee beer stop. I knew if i searched here, I'd find you doing a review of them. Again, very informative. How'd u compare the narragansett to stag?
I had this lager yesterday at a bar just to try It.This lager taste amazing.I like the mild hop flavor,And it's not watered down,And it doesn't have that nasty corn flavor.
Thnx for the review Ron.Living in Mass I can remember it was veey popular back in the 70s with my Uncles /neighbors at parties bbqs etc Have to try it soon
I was hoping you would have a review of this. Just discovered this the other day, sadly on the internet. Being in Texas, I don't think I have anywhere near me that even sells it. Maybe Florida?
Picked up another 12-pack of this and am sipping on it now. Once you really drink enough of it. You find that all the other macro lagers really are dull. This is quite a bit of body and flavor than the rest. Reminds me of PBR and Old Milwaukee. Not so much any of the others. It does stand out and price is still hanging at $12 a 12-pack. So all around its a solid winner. I see the market is expanding. More places here in Northeast TN are selling it so you'll see it down your way eventually. If not, if I ever visit down that way I'll bring you and David some as a beer gift. Cheers!
Narragansett is now available in SE VA. I just drank one and it was much better than I remembered. Definitely more hops presence than most macros. I think Schlitz is tastier though.
Just picked it up in Knoxville Tennessee yesterday. Drank it with a PBR at the same time so I could do for a taste test. It was compared with a PBR (salesman describe it as very similar). Two different beers though, yet I can see the comparison. A bit similar to Genny like you said. It's a tad dry, which I like. Good beer, I liked it.
Don't know if anybody else mentioned this in the comments, but Narragansett is also the beer of Jaws (it is what Quint is drinking on the Orca). So, that is mainly where I know this one from, since I have lived my whole life mostly in Texas and Louisiana. Maybe one day I will get the chance to try it.
Great Review as always- have you ever seen Clammy the 'Gansett clam mascot? I got a shirt with him on it when I bought an 18 pack when the beer re-launched a few years ago. It was white with the Narragansett logo and Clammy was on the back proclaiming "Jam out with your clam out!" No joke.
YAY!!! LOL glad to see this after all my pestering, that head really stuck around longer than most others of its style. Narragansett is trying to bring back a brewery to RI so thanks for doing your part. I just had their Summer beer in the Cape and it was very hoppy! You should of worn a Rocco Baldeli shirt since he's from RI lol...anyway great review its nice to see some New England Beers In the Picture.....Pabst, Gansette, Balentine?
Nice review! I just saw it at Target near Nashville Tennessee and just had to get me a 6 pack. I'm excited to try it in a couple days! I'm a big fan of PBR and Genessee so I'm sure I'll like it. Pretty fair price too. 5.99 for a 6 pack of pints.
@@ronaldtheriot I tried it and I really like it! I'm going to call it a tie with PBR. I do get a slight metallic taste with it, but it's so good that I don't mind. Thanks for the videos!
Great review! I drink this weekly. I'm from Boston, and this is the UN-official beer of the New England Patriots now, as former Patriot Troy Brown is a spokesman. This is also sold at Fenway Park and at my favorite movie theater in Somerville MA in tall boys. My dad used to drink this in the 70's along with Stroh's which I can't find anymore. I'd rate this an A- mainly due to the fact that is has sentimental value to me as my dad's beer. The can looked REALLY different though. Good stuff!
I'm from just north of Boston. This was always like the "Budweiser" around here. My go to sixer of tall boys. I love IPAs but when you can get a buck a pint of something better than swill, who's arguing? I swear sometimes the packie fucks up storage or something though. I'm drinking one now that's only two months old but it just tastes off. Wicked sweet and barely any carbonation even though it's right out of the fridge and canned a couple months ago. Usually it's more light, crisp, and refreshing. This one is thick and tastes syrupy and corny in a bad way. Sometimes they're like that and I never know why. Still drinkable, just not hitting the spot. Slainte!
Hey, Jay! Happy National Beer Day! Havin a Gansett and watchin the Sawx! Don't get more New England than that. CT boy who went to school in Maine, so whaddaya expect? Narragansett is good, Coors is better! Cheers!
It's pretty decent stuff, smooth unassuming American lager. I would choose it over Bud/Miller/Busch (but maybe not Coors) any day of the week. Loving the Led Zep!
I recently found this at the Total Wine store in River Edge, NJ....six pack of pounders for $5.99. I agree with you, as far as mass produced lagers go, this is pretty nice. BTW, the beer can that was crushed by Captain Quint (Robert Shaw) in the movie Jaws was a can of Narragansett. This past summer Narragansett Brewing did a limited run of 12oz 1975 retro cans, unfortunately those all seem to be sold out now. Maybe they'll do another run next year for the movie's 40th anniversary.
The 1975 retro can, same as the one crushed by Quint. Unfortunately I don't think they will be available again until next summer. www.narragansettbeer.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/07/gansett_1975retro_3inch.jpg

Actually, i'm pretty sure "The Clam" refers to Rhode Island's association with Quahogs and the like, also "Clambakes." Just last year, Narragansett released an 'official beer of the clam can', with a full recipe for a New England clambake on the back. Anywho, nice review Ronald, its a pretty decent beer.
Gotta say I did like this beer. Solid North American Lager. Also nobody crushes a can of Narragansett like Quint from Jaws. Coincidentally I was listening to In Through the Out Door before watching this review.
I agree it's a typical beer and good for what it is, but no it is not like a Miller High Life and no it is not like a Budweiser. Those just taste pretty different. It's definitely a down the line American style lager but those two are pretty different. Kind of like a PBR yeah but more grainy and I'd say better tasting. Would be interested to try all these classic American lagers before they scaled up production and made them less flavorful. What kind of taste did PBR and Budweiser have that made them so popular? same price pounders as Nat ice light and Roll R for a while here in Hudson NH local store..4.99 for 6....they went like hotcakes at a fatcamp breakfast...back to normal price now..6.00 and change
Hello Jay. If you are up for a revisit, I just bought a case of tall boys on a trip to Florida this week. It will take me 2 months to finish these off. Let me know, and I will gladly send you a couple.
Good review. i am actually not a huge fan of the style with a couple of exceptions, this being one of them. Went I want something crisp and extremely drinkable, this is what I go for. good call with the high life, i see similarities, but this is better
Revisit? Uh oh.. lol.. ive seen this at my beer store in Pleasant View TN. Maybe do a beer run after my foot heals. Now it'd be a beer hobble. I'll have to try this one too.
I stopped watching @2:15 when he ruined the beer by pouring it like that. That made me cringe. If a bartender , waiter or waitress ever poured my beer like that I would ask for another one.
Jay, the original Gansett brewery was in Cranston, RI. My uncle worked there in the 70’s and they had open taps in their lunch room for anyone that worked there to drink as much as they wanted. The 70’s were a crazy time!

You know what? I have to admit that I never drink beer, after mowing the lawn. Just water. Anyway, thanks for watching, Evan Gray. I appreciate it!
Drinking on this today. Cool to see this classic 12 year old review. 🍻

It is sold in Fl because of People from up there going to FL for the Winter.

the old beer of the boston red sox
Tommy Sands That's right.
I like it, smell- beer, not lime, coffee not orange, beer. Taste- beer, not blueberries, cherries, but beer !!!
I get that. Thanks for watching, Michael Mohrle. I appreciate it!
Haven em tonight..kill to know what it tasted like when it was original. C'est la Vie
Go Red Sox!!
Yes, it's probably a bit different, now, but we'll never know. Go! White Sox!
same price pounders as Nat ice light and Roll R for a while here in Hudson NH local store..4.99 for 6....they went like hotcakes at a fatcamp breakfast...back to normal price now..6.00 and change
Natty ice and Natty light: correction... and Pabst had the great price for 16oz 6er as well..just can't beat it
Yeah, I rarely see any really good beer prices, anymore.
is Les e le bonton roulette.... let the good times roll?
+Cliff Currier Yes, that's right, Cliff.
Hello Jay. If you are up for a revisit, I just bought a case of tall boys on a trip to Florida this week. It will take me 2 months to finish these off. Let me know, and I will gladly send you a couple.
cs1992 Thanks, cs, but is it really worth the cost to ship something like this?
Damn straight, Ronnie.. And love that Zep album! Hope they're not name-dropping American macro-brews! British ales the better.. ckin Zep!
Actually, on that album cover, you can see that the people were drinking Schlitz, Michelob, and Heineken, abc.
burnnnn...lol
I found it lacking flavor at first, then by the last can of the 6 pack days latter I thought it pleasant to drink
I was just glad to have been given the opportunity to try it.
@dreamcast65 Schlitz.
Hi Neighbor!
Hi! Thanks for watching, The S.A. Podcast. I appreciate it!
@@ronaldtheriot you got it keep up the great content!
In Through the Out Door
Exactly. Thanks for watching, Brutusque. I appreciate it!
blatz, schlitz and rheingold
I've had all three.
Good review. i am actually not a huge fan of the style with a couple of exceptions, this being one of them. Went I want something crisp and extremely drinkable, this is what I go for. good call with the high life, i see similarities, but this is better
It's too bad, for us, because we can't get a single Narragansett offering, down here. Thanks for watching, Jeff Abramo. I appreciate it!
I think it's better quality than Pabst..cleaner
Well, I'd have to do a revisit, in order to made a good comment, Cliff.
Revisit? Uh oh.. lol.. ive seen this at my beer store in Pleasant View TN. Maybe do a beer run after my foot heals. Now it'd be a beer hobble. I'll have to try this one too.
South bound Suarez
+Christian Robitzsch Correct. Thanks for watching, Christian Robitzsch. I appreciate it!
darker appearance than trad lagers...caramel
+Cliff Currier Yes, that's true, but the old camera had very bad color.
I also tired this for the first time. it was okay kind of dull and bland. I only got a single
I surely can not get it in Louisiana.
I stopped watching @2:15 when he ruined the beer by pouring it like that. That made me cringe. If a bartender , waiter or waitress ever poured my beer like that I would ask for another one.
But, I am not in a bar, I am at home, so the hard pour makes sense. 12 ounces is 12 ounces.
@@ronaldtheriot Yeah 12 oz of beer that is about flat as a pancake. No thanks.
I am an ugly American. I like my beer ice cold and full of carbonation.
