Paul Gross has carved out a niche for himself as a filmmaker dedicated to telling truly Canadian stories. Now, Paul wants to ensure more Canadians have an outlet to tell their stories. He's behind the push for a new specialty television channel called 'Starlight': a space devoted to Canadian movies, and nothing but Canadian movies, 24 hours a day.

Believe it or not, the CRTC actually TURNED DOWN the concept of a Canadian Movie Channel.
    CRTC denied Starlight a licence.

I'm literally scanning the comments to see if it ever happened (I'm American). How disappointing.

"Oh gee I've never had a plan just to get up!" I love this. :) I think those people who think strategically are simply more about the business side of it than the art itself, and those who go with the flow are more artists than businessmen.
Also I love how he said Denys Arcand and Denis Villeneuve. You can usually tell if an English speaker is Canadian or American by hearing them say French words or names.. Despite his sexy English accent, you can tell that he knows how the names should sound and made a conscious effort to pronounce them correctly. I was watching Due South's episode The Witness yesterday and at one point Fraser suggests that Ray should read À la recherche du temps perdu, from Marcel Proust, and again I was surprised at how well he said those.. We in Québec, as a French speaking minority within the majority of English Canadians all around us, constantly feel linguistically threatened to some degree, but lately I've noticed how generally better at French Canadians are compared to other English speakers around the world.. and I can feel myself easing up a bit realizing that they respect or care enough for the language to not butcher it.. ;)

What happened in season three of Due South? Benton Fraser, Ray Veccio, and Dieffenbacher, had a magical chemistry. Why did David Marciano, leave the show? Did he leave? Season three was still, good, but Marciano 's absence was very noticeable.

CBS went to axe Due South after season 2 and the original "Ray" actor has looked at other work and signed up a contract to do something else thinking it was the end of Due South so didn't want leave but too late to back out of what he had signed up for. Then Due South (I believe this is the point the BBC took on the commission of the show) as was a big hit here in the UK was saved by BBC for rest of it's lifetime. Oddly nowadays never repeated over here or available in DVD box sets/streaming box set/etc considering series 3-6 was a big overseas gross earner for BBC always follow Due South from start to finish. Bet CBS regretted axing it (as more interested in "Friends") as was still successful.

ask any person on the street if they know of a good Canadian movie....only then can we truly celebrate. Most great Canadian talent end up going to the U.S.
