The golden rule with firearms, when you first pick it up you check to see if it is loaded. Not only remove the mag, but the slide as well to make sure there is not one in the chamber. Glad you are OK.

Treat any firearm as if it was loaded at all times. First thing you should do is check to make sure it is clear. Don't screw around with ghost guns, just call the cops and turn them in. Chances are they probably have bodies on them. Also if you are unsure if a firearm is loaded, you should keep it pointed it a safe direction at all times. If you follow the basic firearm safety rules you would not have accidental shootings.
