My current workflow is with Exposure X7 + Affinity Photo.
I was originally all Lightroom, for years. Then migrated to ON1 Photo RAW + Affinity Photo but finally (mostly) swapped out ON1 for X7.
ON1 can do some neat tricks like sky swap-out and simple/quick frequency separation and retouching and good noise and sharpening control.
But X7 photo rendering is much faster and their selection of film presets are very nice. Overall for general photography and portraits I am enjoying the X7 + Affinity Photo combo.

Totally appreciate your excellent comparison. Personally, I had been with DXO/Nik and Luminar for years, then added LRC and like its extensive yet easy-to-use functionality. Very often I mix the softwares using plugins and the like. Affinity presents too steep of a learning curve for me and I don't feel as if I am missing anything, especially after adding the Topaz range which is fixing things the others can't. All in all, too much software but the results speak for themselves. And not always are the latest versions worth the extra $$. But again, many thanks for your great effort.

Having Photolab, PureRaw, FilmPack, Aurora HDR, Affinity, Luminar AI and NEO as well as the NIK collection, all my needs are met-perhaps even more as sometimes I get a little overwhelmed! Just need to learn more about them to get them to work together and understand the strengths/weaknesses of each. The part about Affinity was most interesting to me as it showed actions I did not know the software could do. I like having that control. This was a VERY informative video on the three choices and as a hobby photographer/painter, what I have fits my needs. If I were a professional, I could see Lightroom being a good choice, but as an amateur and with your videos, am getting along nicely.

It’s always good to select between the different tools. Sometimes one tool does the better job, sometimes an other one. Experience is to be able to select the best one without trying, just by watching the raw file. I’m still practicing, since a decade or so… 😅

Interesting Video I stopped using lightroom because of the subscription but have photolab 5 elite, ON1 2022, NIK collection, Affinity photo and the full Topaz Suite so now have Topaz Photo AI. I tend to switch from one to the other depending on the photograph and what I am trying to achieve I also have luminar Neo and Aurora but dont really use them much as Neo has a way to go yet before it is complete. Of the photos you processed today I prefer the softer and warmer look of Photolab. Up until recently I have been using DXO as my raw converter due to Deep prime as I do a lot of wildlife photography and fast shutter speeds and high ISO so noise has been an issue. NIK collection has a huge number of filters some with presets. In the last couple of days I have tested the early release of Topaz Photo AI and then finishing off in Affinity with very good results. The masking in that is perfect but only seems to apply the the main subject but I suspect this will change as I tjhink it is the beta version. I can see lightroom has come a long way since I was using it but from your video I dont think I will be going back to it.

I use DXO PhotoLab, both for work and for "hobby" editing. I primarily work in poor lighting conditions, and that's why I chose DXO a few years ago. It fulfills everything I need perfectly. But it also has its bugs. I use the Czech and English keyboards, when I forget to switch to the English keyboard and want to create a new folder in DXO using the "_" character, the Czech keyboard writes "%".. at that moment DXO freezes, and it is necessary to turn it off in the task manager . Along with the long start it is very annoying. But that's the only thing I would criticize DXO for.

Apart from the incompatibility of RAW/DNG files from most smartphones, my workflow would be to import from LIghtroom Classic, export to DxO as a TIFF to do all my editing and depending on whether I want to apply colour effects or anything like that, I may or may not use Nik, and then send it back into Lightroom to export to my drives or my computer. I only have been starting to use Nik Collection 7 on a trial and it's AMAZING. Same with PhotoLab. I especially LOVE how DxO has a colour wheel that let's you target specific colours with an eyedropper and change its HSL. As well as it's Smart Lighting and Clearview technology. Something I WISH Adobe would do with Lightroom. Also with the U-Point technology like in DxO PhotoLab. I would only use Affinity IF there were things in the photo I found annoying and wanted to remove.

I just tried lightroom and I feel that controls are more precise... they are like finely tuned, whereas DXO's are faster. I'd love to have the SUbject Detection feature in DXO and my life would be complete, automask is not as fast.

My current gripe with Adobe Photoshop is that by black and white prints on my Canon iP8700 are coming out with a pink hue and both Canon and Adobe have been useless in terms of support. This happened when I switched computers to an M1 Max MacBook. But when I print from say PowerPoint it’s OK, suggesting a settings issue. So as I have spent days and days and probably £100 plus on ink and paper, so I’m going to try Affinity as I don’t mind paying for stuff, but not when there’s no meaningful support.

Thank you Olivio. I completly understand your opinion as a professional desginer. For me as a hobby photographer who is on a budget and don´t have a high end computer to work with is the solution Affinity Photo. Yes, I have to learn more, but this is not a bad thing, because can do more on myself. And when I have to decide which picture I like the most, I have to say that the result of Affinity Photo is for me the winner. I see more sharpness and colors which I like more. Yes sometimes I think when I see videos from professional photographers who processing her pictures in a few steps with Lightroom that would be easier but then I think that I´m proud to use such wonderful software for few money.

Olivio, can you do a similar video using Lightroom Classic, Luminar Neo, and other apps more like Lighroon than Affinity Photo? To me, Affinity is more like Photoshop than Lightroom.
Affinity has a much steeper learning curve than Lightroom and someone new to editing who watches your video would naturally gravitate toward a Lightroom-like product like Luminar Neo.

Great video! I think the LRC edit is the best of these. I love using Affinity, but for quick stuff, I have been choosing Luminar Neo more and more. I haven’t settled on a workflow in Neo, but I’m having good success just working from top-to-bottom through the controls that I need for each photo. Luminar AI allows you to save looks and I assume that once that functionality comes to Neo, more artists will be picking it up.

Nice content Olivio. LrC also has the ability to choose your camera lens. That way LrC will adjust the image to characteristics of the the used lens (tab lens corrections). The list to choose from is huge. Since the masking and selecting updates in LrC I start of with LrC to then finish in NIK (mostly B/W images) or AP. Pluspoints for AP are the inpainting brush for 'healing' and 'cloning' Futhermore I do think that there should be a library in AP ... Selections could also be easier in AP too. Multi adaptation for more than 1 image would als be appreciated.
Hopeful for V2.0. Any idea when this would be released?

I don't quite agree with that Affinity Photo has the worst shadow adjustment performance. In my experience it is better than PhotoLab. The thing is that, shadow and highlight adjustments behave very differently in the development persona and photo persona. Shadow and highlight adjustments in the photo persona are a joke. These adjustment should be done in the development persona.

Hello, (camera calibration) adobe color it is not a camera standard, the colors in adobe color are closer to the truth. Camera standard profile produces nice, warm, false colors, Dxo has processing, the default DXO colors are camera standard by default. In adobe lightroom, change the profile to camera standard and then compare.
