Askeladd's death uncovered all the pain and grief he was hiding from himself. Killing the man that killed his father served as a vehicle to not having to deal with the pain of his dad being taken away. For people with trauma, in a way, they live in two timelines: the present, where the trauma has stopped, and the past, where they're still reliving the images, emotions and sensations. Either consciously or subconsciously. It's been twelve years since his father died and he became a warrior, but the pain is as fresh as that one day.
Let's not forget that Thorfinn effectively lost two dads. During their time together, Askeladd become a sort of surrogate father to the very child he orphaned. So Thorfinn was hit with all the returning emotions from losing Thors at the same time he was given new pain in the form of Askeladd dying in his arms.
@Sage Osmium Fair enough. Sorry.
my English teacher radar is going through the roof
@@tek512 exactly! Losing Askeladd was re-traumatizing for him.
Dw he’s lying that doesn’t happen. Like unironcally it doesnt
It's so sad seeing him like this. He's so depressed he literally doesn't want to live anymore. It's tragic really.
Literally me ( a side of having a best family i can get and brothers i can asked for)
I relate to thorfinn completely sometimes
He gave up everything for revenge and that was taken from him that why its important to move on and let go so you won't end up in a bad place or dead or lose someone close to you
Seeing death has that effect he sought vengeance and a purpose but lost it and can’t find another just yet
@Yours Truly... İ am being greatful, they literally best family i known and see around my Relatives and friends family and my dads left arm disabled but he still with us im still eating my moms food even though im 19 ( God i just wanted to use meme template with respect)
Thorfinn standing and taking those slashes without even flinching was some next level of bad@ssery, but also sad because he literally feels he has no purpose in life anymore and he doesn't even fear death. After earning his freedom, he should go back to his village to see his mother and sister.
Being dead inside isn't badass. Unless you're a nihilist.
@Rohan Dasgupta He isn't trying anything, here he genuinely thinks his life doesn't mean absolutely anything
If he really wanted to go to them who would have the power to stop him?
Combined it with the fact, the he did not flinch probably because of the lost purpose, but cause of what he went thought as a Child in the first Season, cause even a Person who totally gave up, will react and flinch to pain, escpeially Cuts like that, he not only can easly ignore all the pain cause of what he suffered, he does not feel any need to defend him cause he lost all reason to live, revenge fuelled him for most his life, even if it would not bring him peace to avenge his father, it Just got stolen right before his eyes, his one and only purpose he sacrificied everything to get, Just taken away, what has he left? He May faintly remeber his Mother and sister, but how can he go back? He failed to protect his father, then he failed to avenge him, i would guess he Sees himself as a failure for that who is not even welcome in his home, so he Just.... Exists, waiting for the end
Eventually y’all will get that awaited episode
This is where the greatness of Vinland Saga really starts to come full circle. Even if you're depressed, regret everything and feel like your whole life was a gigantic mistake, this show will teach you how to pull yourself out of that hellish mental torment and live happily.

The part that really hurts about seeing how thorfinn feels that he has nothing left to lose/has nothing to fear losing is knowing how there are still people in his life that care for him and are still looking for him after all these years.
@Scott's Precious Little Account he literally left his family to seek revenge
It is ultimately a selfish kind of mentality. But that's how everyone is.
Animation - and good ones at that - really make all the difference. Reading this scene was emotional of course but seeing this play out here was heartbreaking. Thorfinn taking all those cuts; the pain. All that yet being so dead inside that your body goes numb altogether. Thorfinn is about to go through one of the best character arcs ever.

@@yeager1234 ur w moron vinland is goat all the way thru
Not really. It becomes a boring slice of life.
Thorfinn is depressed, after giving up everything, making bad decisions, letting his emotions consume him and wasting years of his life in a revenge he couldn't even complete, he is completely empty in the abyss, just doesn't feel anything.
It's very sad, he's saying he doesn't care about dying and neither does his life or what happens to him, that's why he doesn't blink when he's attacked.
I love how the author represented the depression and how he has to suffer the consequences of his actions, it feels very real.
To be reborn, you must first pour yourself out and become empty(something we learn later in the season)
Completely agree. I'm impressed how realistically depression is portrayed here. I never related that much with a fictional character like Thorfinn.
Isn't the lack of feelings a step to enlightement?
Oh my good Thorfinn the look of your face means a lot , you are so broken man . I hope you find peace in your life 😭😭😭 .
he will....
spoiler here
he will create the peace in the world
Seeing Thorfinn look so dead inside just breaks my heart.
He has always been dead inside since his father died. He was just hiding it with a revenge quest.
@@BruceWayne-fj9bm Nah, during his time with Askeladd he was slowly learning to be a better person. Then Askeladd died and Thorfinn saw himself in the same situation as when his father died, only now there was nobody to take revenge against.
@@Gabu_ Thorfinn was not becoming a better person under Askeladd he became a stagnant death seeker, Askeladd pointed this out to him multiple times but it's just that Thorfinn stuck around because he found somewhat of a father figure in Askeladd in a twisted way, then when he died he truly had nothing to latch unto.
"There's nothing you can do that life hasn't already done but worse."
What is this?......
The clip about the kid covered in scars is from an anime called Karakuri Circus.
Just goes to show how lucky Fox is that he's dealing with a Thorfinn who's lost his sense of purpose. The old Thorfinn would have finished him off within seconds without thinking twice.
the depression arc goes insane
Holy cow, that look in his face after this black, grey-centred panel appeared with this intensely ear-pressuring intimidating music in the background as he looks up directly into the camera with this powerful speech 😮 i’m beyond mesmerised and fixated on this panel.
I cried. This episode hit. Thorfinn....just wow

If a show, or a fictional character can help someone, why does it matter if it’s real or not? Had to re-read the Vagabond farm arc to deal with waiting. So good.
Watch and learn kids. This is what a true character development/redemption looks like. This is simply one of the best if not the best
A warrior with no purpose is a deadman walking. 1:29 breaks my heart that thorfinn truly has nothing to live for. He has family that is looking for him, that love him, that miss him yet he still has no desire to see them again. So painful
@Scott's Precious Little Account agreed. Still come to terms that he is the reason his father died and that he failed him as a son. The loss of askeladd as well is destroying him as well
I'm happy people are enjoying the show!!! It's good to see this arc, especially this episode animated because we get to really feel Thorfinn's emotions more.
I feel like this anime is going to cover a huge amount of mental health, and im honestly ready for that. In any type of scene, its an important thing to be discussed. This episode is, 10/10 ❤️
Exactly! I don't care if there's no action in this season as long as I can see a fantastic development.

"he didn't even blink that's impressive"
Yeah well you should have seen him before, when he was filled with rage and hatred, when he was a war machine..
Only 3 episodes in and it's already one of the best depictions of recent times about a person who has given up and fallen into a deep depression. Loving the development, hope it stays as good for the whole season!
Honestly, as someone who has given up on life and feels unworthy of living, this scene hits hard.
In the end all you can do is find your own path. There is no defining reason to live, But everyone will die. Why fear the inevitable when change is far more terrifying than anything else. If you know its going to happen you can accept and understand it. When you don't understand, When you don't know whats next. When you fear the possibility. Thats what life is, And everyone will live through it differently.
All humans are unworthy of living so don't brood on it
As someone who has had this feeling in the past and battled with suicidal thoughts for years. I can understand. But, life has it's moments. And starting to put it back, even just a bit, helps put yourself back together and learn to dream again. Hope you the best,
Maybe this can help u ? Remember that u don't ever need to be worthy of living because u are life itself. Same as all people and living creatures on this planet.
This story helped me through losing my girlfriend in Ukraine, and I'm doing alright now, it's always an uphill battle, but that's ok.
Seeing Throffin like this breaks me man! It not that he's just depressed it's way more than that he's just living in a limbo state and then right after the ending plays and I just couldn't move for a second. Masterful episode!
Thorfinns development is one of the greatest stories ever told

Ever since Thors' death, Thorfinn has been using Askeladd to bury his pain and grief. With Askeladd dying as well, Thorfinn has to face all of his pain alone.
No. Thors wasn't the trauma for Thorfinn, Askeladd was. Askeladd was his life purpose and his de facto father.
You can’t scare someone who have nothing left to lose and have no purpose
@Rohan Dasgupta fr thorfinn would clap him easily if he tried 😂
Oh wow, was not expecting that ending. Thorfinn is a beast though.
Manga's autor, literally created the whole prologue, one of the best in any media, just to have Thorfinn saying that quote
Many people dont understand this season and Thorfinn, good for you, but its a complete common behaviour when a 8y old kid spends his time in the situation he had in the season 1, call it PTSD or whatever you want, but if you dont understand him, the lack of empathy is on you.
If you say Vinland Saga is boring at this point... Then you have much to learn from life. Once life steps on you and beats you when you are down on the floor, you'll come back to this masterpiece and understand how amazing it is.
You can recognize an art form as thematic, or true to life, or depressing… but still think it’s boring. I’m not saying season 2 is boring, but what I am saying is that debunking all criticisms as youngsters who are naive, haven’t had any troubles in life, or inexperienced is an illogical argument.
@@BruceWayne-fj9bm where in my comment did I mention youngsters?
@@BruceWayne-fj9bm Boring is a terrible criticism though. I could say rom-coms are boring because I inherently don't like the genre and it says nothing of value about the piece of media
Too true, alot of anime these days has lost its depth and what they originally represented. But anime like this, touch deep when you've experienced life and the harsh realities it holds
While I agree with you, this show can only be appreciated by those who've experienced suffering. There are some privileged people that won't ever feel these grievances.
I can already see the middle schooler's phone backgrounds changing...
Next episode is gonna have some peak character development and its gonna have a ton of new revelations
Damn Thorfinn really just feels Hollow inside now.
One of my favorite scenes in Vinland Saga. To see Thorfinn at his lowest is heartbreaking and extremely relatable.
Does anyone know the name of the song/music that is played Thorfinn is speaking?
It elevates the scene to a whole new level.
peak storytelling and char development. i am simply delighted!
This gets me in so many ways. I can write TOMES about these few seconds. Thorfinn IS NOT A FICTIONAL CHARACTER constructed/hand drawn/voice acted for a show. THERE ARE MANY PEOPLE LIKE THIS. This happens a lot in OUR WORLD.
The message Thorfinn delivers here is DEEP in so many levels. He's saying something about our current times and the situations we are in. He's speaking about tyranny and how tyranny throws away any purpose in life.
His philosophical stance is way TOO strong. This is not an ordinary anime with a good story telling. This is the WRITER telling us a DIRECT message of our current time and how we gave up life itself.
Even though I miss the action, I appreciate the direction this season is taking. Will just make the action and fights in Season 3 and 4 that much more sweeter.
I mean at one point he could have just gone back home when that old man found him in season 1
