    Hi fam,
As we roll into a new year, it's a great time to reflect on 2023 to see what we've done well and what we could have done better. I think this is an important part of setting your guitar goals for 2024.
To help facilitate this discussion, I made a quick video about the dos and don'ts of setting guitar goals. There is a pretty interesting angle on this one, so give it a watch and leave any tips you may have for others in the comments.
    Happy New Year,
    Nate
1 - Don't JUST make a big list of all the things you want to accomplish on the guitar.
2 - Try not to be too broad.
3 - Apply everything to music.
4 - Set aside time dedicated to focused practice.
5 - Set aside time for just having fun.
6 - Commit to your goals publicly.
7 - Be consistent with your practice.
8 - Don't measure your progress in days or weeks.
9 - Video or record yourself.
10 - Be kind to yourself.

    Great video!
I think the very most important tip is to be kind to yourself. Once at a workshop I caught myself saying “I sucked”. This is something I would never say to anyone else. Why would I ever say something that cruel about myself???
The other big tip is to record, record, and then share it with The Guitar Fam. This has really helped me to improve in the last year.
Lastly, the tip about focusing on songs is a great one. In the past I would focus too much on skills and not enough on songs. But songs are where those skills are applied. I don’t think many people would want to go and watch Eric Clapton play scales for an hour and a half.

Subscribed! May sound like stating some obvious things but way too many of us, myself in the first place, forget them so easily 🤷🏻‍♂️ good to hear a reasonable voice as a reminder 💪

In the past I would be overly optimistic about how much I could do and would set too many goals. Then I would end up not doing most of the goals I set. This year I think will take a more focused approach. I like what you said about checking progress in months instead of days or weeks. When I was working on my timing last year, it took a lot longer than I thought to improve it. I am still working on my timing this year.
