The concern to avoid a biased sample in the study of public beliefs about repressed memories reflects a very common issue. For example Susan Clancy recruited for her study on child sexual abuse with a newspaper ad asking "Were you sexually abused as a child?" guaranteeing that no one whose memory was positive or neutral would respond.
An error in the description of Freud's thought: a daughter's attraction to her father would be the Electra, not Oedipus, complex.
It is a horror that recovered memory is resurfacing. Therapists, lay therapists in particular, were responsible for so much hardship, suicides, family estrangements etc. Where COSA (Casualties of Sexual Allegations) was at one time an international organization to combat recovered memory syndrome, it has wound down its operations. Time to dust off Cici and Bruck's (1995) book.
